  1. OK, so a couple of people said I should be running 87. So could the higher octane fuel I've been using be the cause of by decel backfiring?
  2. So I like to run 94 in my bike, but here in the Cariboo the only company that carries the grade is Chevron and their stations are few and far between. So, I when I have to, use 91. Good? Bad? Indifferent?
  3. If you mean on the unkown thingy, nope. It's solid, no holes, ports, nada, butkus, diddly, zero, nothing. It just is. LOL
  4. Does the 98 RSTD have linked brakes?
  5. How do I become a supporting member?
  6. To the administrator, how long do I remain a "trial" member? I tried sending email, can't also tried to ad photo to a question I have, can't. thanks. Precious.
  7. How do I upload pixs from my computer when I don't have an URL link? Trying to post a couple of pix of a piece that was in the saddle bag of my 98 RSTD because I have no idea what it is. Looks like a cover of some type, thought it might be for battery, but it's too big. Instructions say link with URL or upload, but I don't see anything that shows an upload link. Thanks
  8. Much thanks. I got seven in the front and will check the one that had zero air in the morning to see of it's leaking. Again, thank you.
  9. Okay, so I discovered my front shocks are air. Question, on a 1998 RSTD is the rear shock also air? I have run my hands over the full length of the shock and I can't feel nor see a valve. Am I simply missing it, or dumber than the POTUS?
  10. As a followup, can I just bypass the ignition and install a toggle switch?
  11. So i chose to post here in hopes more people will have answers or suggestions. As mentioned in another area of the site for RSTD, I have n issue of the bike just quitting. My question is could it be a faulty ignition switch? I have cleaned the carbs...TWICE, cleaned the kickstand switch, checked for air flow. I ask because after a clean 50 K trial run after putting the bike back together yesterday, with no issues, I went for a scoot today and it quit 6 Xs, twice it strted right backup on it's own, four times I let it rest and it started. I made it to the gas station and after filing up, it won't start, so I grabbed a soda and let it rest for about 15 minutes, much longer than normal. It would not start! I played with the key and it started right up. I made it about half way home and it quit. This time I didn't let it rest, I played with the key and it started. Thoughts?
  12. Well here I go again. Getting scoot ready for a test ride to see if the quitting issue has been dealt with and now there's a new issue. While idling with the choke engaged I'm getting popping from between the heads below the carbs. Thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated.
  13. So I followed the advice of someone, sorry forgot to copy the name for here. I took it for a run to the store and back, about 24 KM round trip and it happened 5 times! A couple of things, first I did not hear any clicks from the fuel filter and in the past I remember hearing those clicks. I took the gas cap off and listened for rushing air...nada. What was different today, the bike ran perfectly to the store, but wen I came out and fired it up, it quit as soon as I put the kick stand up. Secondly, one one occasion, it quit and restarted almost instantly, like a jump start. One other thing, we have about 7 kilometers from out house to the highway, so round trip on that road about 14 K and both yesterday and today it never quit at low speed on that road. So any additional info will be greatly appreciated.
  14. Thanks for the add. While I'm new to the group, I'm not new to Yamaha. I have owned a Virago, two Ventures and recently purchased a 98 RSTD. The bike sat for 8 years and I'm just the 3rd owner. The person I bought it from owned it for 18 years. I replaced the battery, new tires, cleaned the carbs, oil and filter and cleaned the air filter. The bike still backfires despite many attemps to set air-fuel mix...that's one issue, but now the new promblem. I was out for a boot today and at highway speed, the bike quit. After several tries and letting it sit for a few minutes, it started and I headed home and, yep, it quit again. It was like the gas just quit flowing to the carbs. So what should I be looking for? Much thanks in advance.
