  1. I saw that on some of your pictures! Hows the bike running and how is that new job treating you?
Job is good. Got my 5th unit delivered today since last Friday. If I can have weeks like that going forward...I'll be fine. It's either been 100 degrees or storming or both. Bike is waiting for me to borrow a clutch tool on Tuesday and fix on Wednesday.

  2. Update time! So the bikes been sitting pretty much since I started selling cars at the beginning of June. (That's going fine but getting used to a schedule is different after being my own boss for 10 years.)

Anyway, someone on here mentioned changing the oil help their clutch. I tried the same thing I used to Honda line 4 cycle oil conventional 20/50 to replace the 2050 conventional that was just automotive oil that I had in there for a couple hundred miles. The clutch started slipping with that other oil so I thought it'd be worth a shot change it to see if everything went back to normal

Everything was good for about a hundred miles and then it started to slip again so I am going to have to replace the stack I'm just waiting for a gasket to show up at this point.

I also was able to clean the fork seals and they stop leaking so that's cool!

  3. I just checked mine and found that the bolt was tight but the stand (when extended) had a lot of up and down play. I think the clamp has widen from a loose bolt and the bike's weight leaning on it. Is that the play that this thread wants me to address??
Mine too. My bolt won't budge. Nothing cracked.

  4. You made it political implying that the New York Times publishes facts, :rotf:

I think it's a terrible move on their part, But But, if Harley is not about 'Made in the USA' any longer, who will buy them? Sorry, just not a Harley fan.

Count me in the non-fan column!

  5. I have a brand new set of progressives for a 1st gen. in an unopened box! PM me and you can have them at cost. Free ship. I'll find my receipt.

    Hey you guys,

Thank you do much for the welcome and the good words of encouragement.

Sure, I was a little butt hurt my self, I took a moment to back up and smile to resist the urge to blast a person in a verbal way that would probably be as misunderstood as my first writing he tried and failed to digest.

I am here to stay and plan to be onboard for the long run. Again, I thank each and everyone of you for your kindness and I look forward to meeting many of you in the near future. Nuff said...

What I need as far as parts are concerned I've listed below. I'm willing to pay any reasonable price that I can and I appreciate all of you more than the written word can grasp.

    CTI/CDI box

    Plug wires

    Plug caps 5k resistor type

    2 coils

Probably front seals and springs (they leak worse than government security)

I'm looking for some progressive springs if anyone has any laying around. I think Cow-Puc was supporting them in a big way. I have to air them up continuously or I look like a low rider scraping the bottom. I'm not sure about the other electrical parts because I haven't had a multitester since the fire so I'm not really sure of what's what yet.

I've pulled the entire body off and am using my time to get it ready for a paint job. So, this is where I'm at and no matter what else happens I'm determined to have her up and on the road 90 days from now, that's my goal and I'm gonna make it happen. This bike is a 1984 xvz1200. Again, thank you all, you ARE a great group, huh..[emoji16]

  6. Opinions on oil are like ... well, opinions on oil. Everyone has one. I have my own opinions on engine oil, but bike forks are (in my opinion) pretty easy duty for modern oils. I use whatever is available at a reasonable price and haven't yet seen / felt any difference in brands. I've used Bel-Ray, Motul, Honda, Yamaha, I don't know any I would avoid.

Yeah, pretty smart branding on Progressive's part, kind of like being able to name your company "Airshocks".

I have a doctor friend who competes in BBQ competition in Kansas City every summer. They named their team, "Last Year's Champs".

  7. This was a few days ago but I finally have time to post.

I took my Venture out on the road for a run. I left Dallas area at 0400 to spend the night east of Fargo, ND, for a 1200 mile 19 hour ride. Then off to Billings, MT, and down to Colorado Springs for the second night and 1100 miles in 18 hours. This was followed by a 900 mile return to home.

So I completed my first Saddle Sore 3000 (3000 miles in under 72 hours). Had to see if this old fart still had it at 69 and a half.

I got home before dark so I washed the bugs off of the front. I washed and waxed it the next day.

A new goal for my bucket list! You're Superman!

  8. Did you get the clutch parts you needed figured out?
Just ordered from Barnett. I still need to look up the gasket #

Now I'm excited to get home and see if I can get the fork seal cleaned. Those seals aren't that old and I wasn't thinking about bugs on forks once I did get this labor of love on the road.

  9. Me too. I've found that most of the time leaks are crap between the seal and the tube, there isn't really a surface or enough action on those seals to wear them much, they lead a pretty easy life. If they're old and stiff that's one thing, but if they're still pliable then cleaning almost always does the trick for me. Gaiters are nice, they keep stuff off the tubes and eliminate cleaning, if you like the look.
They were just redone 3 years ago less less than 3,000 miles

  10. And I need to get my shifter linkage length dialed-in. Right now I believe the adjustment screw is as short as it can go and so there's a lot of slop and it's hard to get into first year by shifting down with my heel. Remember that I have a reverse shift pattern.

I've also developed a puddle below my left front Fork. Last time it was the anti dive this time looks like it's the top seal. I haven't tried to clean anything yet to see what the heck is going on there but will be addressing it while it's up on the jack.

So that means I'll be pulling that left side cover off where the slave is again so I can get to that adjustment. I had a drip from there over the kickstand for about a week and then once I got to ride and got going I wiped it clean and I haven't had a drip so that's weird but I'll see what it was while I have the cover off

I did get almost 2,000 miles in 3 weeks while she was running. Now I know why she's worth all the work. ( she'll never be worth all the money though)

    ;)

  11. Do you mean it slips like a beast? or theres no pull when you pull the clutch lever?? Is it froze up?
The pull is fine. It slips like a beast. I can hold highway speeds just fine. I have developed a new habit of driving around 60 miles an hour at around 36 3700 RPM instead of 32 hundred. But in 5th gear 65 miles an hour and then go full throttle. Tach jumps up, speedometer slowly starts to catch up to where the tach is.

  12. You have certainly been through struggles with that bike! dag

  13. That really sucks about the bike falling off the lift. I know it's been a couple weeks but I have been thinking about you.

Voltage reading with ignition on, Battery alone, both sides of all fuses, really the same, 12.2 volts, including #4 , the brown line. That's just sitting, not running.

Damaged after fall, left rear turn, left fairing a bit. I have dug into those sides extensively, unplugged this and that, especially anything related to 'brown wire', can not make any change in readings. After chasing the schematic, seems brown also connects into rectifier? I don't seem to have charging issues, but I guess I'll go find that and at least inspect plug.

    Any other ideas?

  14. Well I got 3 weeks in about 1800 miles out of the old girl before the clutch decided it was done. I've searched and searched and I can't come up with the parts list I need to replace the stack and Gasket and anything else I might need before I start that job? Do any of you have that information handy?

Do I need the bent nose ring pliers if I'm not doing a master cylinder to do this job?

Also I have yet to find a way to bookmark or save post that I want to keep for later referral. Is there somewhere on this site to build my own Library?

I put the new heavy duty springs in this spring. Now I know it's the stack because cruising on the highway at 60, roll the throttle to full and the tach jumps to about 7.5 and then the speedometer catches up.

  15. It is not real hard to get back there.

Pull the headlight and the windshield and then the dash cover is right there.

Pull the cover and it is all right there in front of you. you do not have to pull the fairings.

The dash is held in with 4 nuts from the underside. There are 2 connectors and the speedo cable that plug into the back of it.

    Yep!
