Yeah a swag is basically a bedroll of any type. There are commercially available products but mine is adapted from bitsa this and bitsa that [emoji6]. I have a camp stretcher with holes drilled to hold fibreglass rods that keep the mossie net up off my bedroll.By the way brother,, I would LOVE to stop Tweeks in front of "Snake Gully" and camp there for a night = AWESOME and my kind of place!!! Gotta ask,,, in that lil camp you got set up,,,, is that sleeping quarter arrangement what Aussie Annies husband "Quickstep" was telling me about when he mentioned a "Swag"????Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

Got my clutch slave cylinder looked at yesterday and the mechanic bled the clutch for me. Friction zone is where it should be now. Cant see where the fluid is leaking from and its not leaking since we bled the system.
Went for a ride out to the fishing village my father grew up in. Lovely day 25°C/77°F. Beachport South Australia.

Thanks cowpuc always appreciate your words both educational and entertainment wise. Fresh oil 10/40w before I left. Queensland was 30°C/86°F. I arrived in South Australia two days later and 20°C/68°F.OUTSTANDING!!!!!![emoji106]GORGEOUS PICS DAVIN!!!
No idea what kind of tempts you riding in and/or what oil your running and/or how many miles on the oil but my 1st Gens will get sticky/notchy/stiff in the shifting if I let the oil get tired or if I am running to low of viscosity for the tempts.. I usually swap in some 20/50 weight when doing desert touring here in the States which helps A LOT...
Could be also check and see if you have lost fluid in your clutch master.. If not but that fluid is dark from age or usage = maybe just stop and pick up some fluid and a small piece of clear fuel line - attach the line to the slave bleeder and bleed in some fresh fluid.. No air if your careful....
WOWZY WOW WOW WOW - GORGEOUS PICS!!!!
Looks like a BLAST! Snowing like crazy here in Michigan right now - picked up another 6 inches just tonight... DEFINITELY not in OZ I tell ya!!!! Watch for gators and kangaroos out there!!!
I have had some fluid loss from the clutch master before I left but none on the journey.

Well I made it to South Australia today. The bike ran really well but I have started getting sticky gear shift and the friction zone in the clutch lever is instant action. Not good.GORGEOUS pics Dav!!!!!!!! Hope your 2000k ride is going just SUPER out there today!!RIDE ON BROTHER - DO US FROZEN LOP EARED VR VARMINTS IN THE STATES PROUD!!!!!!
My trailer came off its hitch. Thank god I allways cross the chains over. The tongue landed in the chains and I was able to come to a wobbly but safe stop.
Got a lead on a good local bike mechanic. Thinking my clutch slave cylinder might need rebuilding.

Mine had a sticky rod in the rear brake switch. I pulled the switch apart. Found the actuator rod, which is attached to the return spring on the brake pedal, was bent. Straightened that and put a new plastic lock nut on. My rear brake switch would stay on tricking the cruise into thinking the brakes were on.mind telling what fixed it? Mine's out again. It's been in and out about 4 times so far. I have a used vacuum pump, I haven't put that on yet.Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

Took a four hour round trip to Woodford and home again. Flushed and bled the rear brake, repaired a dodgy rear brake switch and all went well. Cruise control is working full time again. Also added some old school highway pegs. Leaving for a 2000km interstate trip tomorrow.

There isn't much difference in the height of the tire. Check this link for comparisons. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=150-80r16-130-90r16I have used Dunlop D404s for near 200,000 miles on my ride and had no problems. Always use Dyna Beads for balance and mount my own tires, but I have read many posts on the 777, and I thought I would try these (since they come in White Walls). I am not looking for high mileage (ran D404s for years) but I like the "sticky" part of the posts. I have a tire changer and lift so changing is quick, no spoons for me.I read that some feel that running the 130 front made it handle easier, but are these stock configured Ventures? I have lifted the rear many years back to perform the same effect and it worked. Would lowering the front (use 130 front) on my machine throw it out of whack? I think it probably would.
Just rambling on but Cowpuc's review was what sent me to Shinko. If it doesn't work out I will be heading to Michigan without Hot Dogs. [emoji481]

I have my reshaped and recovered in leather seats rode in now. Very pleased with the comfort. Went for an OEM style. Thinking of being more daring with my 99RSTD

Head light bulb is H4 your driving/passing light bulbs are H3The smaller headlight on the left side is not working either. Does anyone know what bulb I need to buy to replace it? Are there any better bulbs y'all would recommend? I do a lot of night time riding and I want to see all the DEER on the side of the road!http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=111430
Some people upgrade to LED or daymakers.

As for speed if your handling is the issue it may need a new front tyre or at least check the pressure. Also check the steering head bearing for wear.

The intake rubbers that you show here have normal cracking for the age of this bike. These are very thick rubber and will not need to be replaced even though this cracking looks really bad. To check if you have leaks in these you can spray WD40 or similar over them while the bike is running. If it doesn't change idle speed then there is no leak and you probably have several years of life left in the intake boots.I thank everyone on this forum for all the good advice before buying this Venture. I'm very happy with the purchase. It was a 50 mile ride home, mostly highway. So I got a good feel for it today.http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=111429
HOWEVER...
This Venture is quite different from the V-Twin sports bike I've been riding the last 2 years. So I have some questions...
1. What speed do y'all normally cruise on the highway? Any faster than 75 or 80 seemed a bit too much for my Venture today.
2. Is some backfiring on deceleration normal? If not, what could be causing it?
3. Unfortunately, the previous owner left this bike out in the sun A LOT. The thick black hoses (air intake??) under the tank are dry rotted. There is a lot of superficial rust. What do I need to look for that I might NOT see so easily that could also be damaged from keeping the bike outside all the time??
4. The horn works half the time. I got cruise control to work only the first time I tried it. I could not get it to work again. What could be causing all the buttons and switches to be so sketchy? Could it be all the time in the sun? Could it be just old wiring? Both?
Here's a pic of the hoses that are dry rotted... Where can I find some new ones??

That roadliner wheel looks better and improves handling. I love it. The brakes are better too, only thing that changed was the roadliner rotors but the brakes grab a lot better.I really like the front wheel setup on your 99 as wellSent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

The frames on a 96-01 RS RSTC and RSTD are different to the frames on a 99-13 RSV -RSTD. This is to accommodate different air box systems, handlebar mounted instruments, dog bone upper cylinder braces and the larger carbs.Weren't the rubber tubes that hold the carbs on the motor smaller in diameter? So you'd put ones on from a 99 or newer, probably modify that airbox, and maybe jet the carbs? Just my guessRetrofitting larger carbs to a 96-01 wouldn't be easy or cheap

Hi Davin, I got a message from Mike (The Diamond Cut Guy) wo has helped me out with some parts and posting them to Australia for me. A top bloke who has gone out of his way to assist me get the bits I needed. I have started pulling tghings down on the bike now and are discovering a few issues (as expected) along the way. Nothing that time and $$$ wont fix...though like all these type of projects they end up costing much more than first thought. Will definitely keep you posted on the progress. Plan on riding it to Brizzy...to visit a mate once completed (first quarter 2018) so will let you know when. Cheers Stu
Thats great Stu.
When you do get to ride your venture up this way my mate Dave and I would be keen to meet up for a ride.

The floor boards on my 98RSTD and 99RSV are interchangeable. They are exactly the same. The only problem may be if you have 4x4 pipes. My 99RSV has 4x2x4 and the 98RSTD has OEM 4x2 pipes.Need some help here. When I got my 1997 Royal Star it came with rear pegs not boards . Now that my wife likes to go on longer rides the pegs gotta go. I know they came with floor boards but can anyone tell me a cheap place to pick up a pair? Will any other models work or are they model and year specific? Any help here would be great.Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

Hi Flyinfool the PO fitted that attachment and I removed it last week. I realised I will never use it for its intended purpose. Its a bicycle rack. It is bolted thought the front and rear. The front has or rather had a quick release bicycle axle padlocked to the mount for attaching the bicycle.OK I'll bite.So what is that bar across the top?
It looks like the front is hinged with a pad lock and the rear is free to bounce up and down?

The Royal Stars are not well known here in Australia. I also couldn't remember hearing of them until a bloke at work who has ridden Harleys for over 20yrs was telling me about The Royal Star Venture he nearly bought. That sparked my interest and now I have two of them. Traded my 08 XJR1300 in for the 99RSV and later picked up my 98RSTD for a bargain. I have been having a ball making them my own.Nice. Yep I bought the damaged 99...am still chasing up some parts but getting there. Wont make real progress for another 5 - 6 weeks while I wait for parts to arrive.Special thanks to the Diamond Cut Guy (Mike)...who reached out on this site and has been real supportive in helping me source various parts. Would in a world of pain without his help.
Do keep in touch I was unaware of these bikes until I saw this Venture on EBay. Something different (to a Harley) and are looking forward to getting it all sorted. Feel free to drop me an email at stu.green@hotmail.com and I will definitely keep you updated with the progress. Cheers Stu
