  1. well thanks to muffinman getting me a output shaft i finnally got my bike back together. seems to run pretty good but i think the cluthes are slipping a little bit so i already have my next project ready for e. that and i put in new fork seals and i'm not sure if the anti dive is working right. my front end wobble is gone but it seems like it might have sort of a hop in the front-end. went for a ride again tonight though with the air in the front on low and it seemed alot better so it might just be that i finally have the forks full of fluid and need to relearn my air settings when riding. anyhow another venture back on the road thanks to all the help here.

  2. Well I finnally got the grease and grime of the last 20yrs off the motor and was looking at the bike to get ready to put it back in and found my fork seals that have been seeping slightly finnally gave out to. my question now is if I'm better off doing fork seals before i put the motor in or after. Not sure how much force is required to seperate them but I'm thinking having the motor in shouldn't be in the way and i can brace the bike better. any opions

  3. No second gear issue here. I have a 90 now just forgot to update my bike on here, looks like my only problem is the shaft off the pinon gear broke and i have muffinman sending me one he has on monday. i didn't have to split the case but i will have to find new gaskets for all the side covers and a new u-joint. otherwise its looking like i just might get to ride this summer after all.

  4. Okay since I'm laid-off now i finally have time to work on the bike. Got busy today and so far have the motor pulled out of the bike and waiting for help to put it on the work bench. bad part about being laidoff is all your help is working for money when you try and get them to help.

Anyhow sofar no signs of cracks in the case but the drive shaft appears bent and the output shaft of the motor has broken off. Not sur what thi means for what i might find inside the motor but has me hopeing i can repair and not have to part out

  5. Well i started off good, finnaly putting new valve cover gaskets on(lots of fun there),cleaning all the grease and grime from the old leaky gaskets off, and doing a fresh oil and filter change all ready for the summer. Two days later on my way home from work today bikes running great doing about 70 down the freeway in the end of rush hour traffic and i get a loud mettalic crunch and what sounds like metals bouncing down the road behind me. the rear tire starts to lock up, pull the clutch in and it coasts smooth to the shoulder in about the busiest spot on the freeway of course. out it in neutral bike idles perfect look underneath and see the last of my oil pouring onto the blacktop. got a trailer and she sits in the garge now. hopefully next week i can start looking into it, i'll be gone all weekend.my only thoughts right now are it must be in the transmission, which means pulling the motor, more fun. hopefully no crackes in the housing but a short supply of parts money with a kid on the way means i doubt i'll get it back on the road anytime soon.

  6. i really hadn't found any boards that i thought were worth mentioning, can't rember the names anyhow. Our problem began with what we thought was just a starter relay. hit the starter button and just hear the relay click. ordered a new relay and while waiting on it to show up found the starter bolts were bent, also the bike seemed to turn over it you were sitting on it in neutral, kickstand up,and the clutch in. mounted starter straight and put in the new relay. hit the starter button and a wire fried in the wiring harness from the turn signal switch to the steering colum. what we think happened is somewhere in the main harness under the seat the starter circuit shorted to the ground wire which is connected in the harness somewhere to the wire that fried. Right now its all guess work but it does explain why it acted differnt when you were sitting on it. pretty much it looks like it's gonna be a long night.

  7. anybody know a good v-star tech site, so far the ones I've found seem pretty excited to be able to change their own oil. My buddy's 1100 got some serious elec issues. I think we might have to replace the enitre main wiring harness but that sounds pretty spendy so were trying to pin out each cable. need a better wiring digram for the cables themselves.

  8. I just finished putting new dunlop E3 tires on the bike. first time i've ever had to buy tires for a bike, boy was i surprised to see the price tags. decided to save money and take the wheels off myself and learned something. the bike doesn't like to stay on the center stand with both tires off. guess i shoulded done a little more research before pulling them both off. things were kinda hairy a couple of times in the process but were looking good now. i just need to put the saddlebags back on and take a little trip to breakin the new tires. now if the rain finnaly stops for a bit in mn i'll be happy to start stacking the miles on again

  9. well now i just learned the hard way about just how hard brake fluid is on the plastic, had to put new brake pads in up front and squrited a little out on farings. next morning the corner buy your knee was in pieces. i put it back together for now with "cold steel" epoxy we'll see how well that lasts

  10. I'm pretty sure i just good a pretty deal on a 1990 venture royal.

So far the only things i've found wrong is a wobble in the front if you don't have a firm grip on the bars, I'm guessing some sort of bearings in the forks or steering for that and it needs new tires. I'm planning to ride it alot in fact I've put 800mi on since i picked it up saturday, but it kinda sounds like the dunlop e3 are a good bet for a good handling long lasting tire. thought get an opion from you guys

  11. had similar trouble with mine after tearing apart for 2nd gear fix, hit the start button and it would just click. put the meter on it and it had voltage at the starter when i hit the button but it was down to 8v, checked the battery voltage and it dropped to 9v when i hit the button. took the crankcase cover of to check the stater gear train, it all looked good so i just put the cover back on and held it by hand, hit the stater and it cranked just fine. i'd been making my own gaskets instead of ordering the real one so broke down and order one hoping there was a clearance issue with the homemade one's. sure didn't look like that was gonna be it after looking at it but that seemed to be the problem cause it cranks over great now

  12. had the same exact problem with mine when i put it back together. i think i found the problem by looking at the yamaha parts diagram i belive i put the thrust washer on the wrong side of the clutch boss so when i torqued down the nut holding it in it was squeezing it against the back of the clutch.

i'd tell you for sure if that was my problem but i just busted the clutch boss trying to put it back together so now i ordered another one fom yama and gotta wait another week to get. hope you have better luck than me

  13. i haven't finished reassembling my bike quite yet so i'm not 100% that my gear problems are solved but everything seemed to line up good. i ended up just replacing the 2nd fork and thrust washers but on that note when you order parts make sure you get 2 of the thrust washers. they screwed up my part #'s so i got two washers and only one of the half-moon actual thrust washers

    good luck

  14. well spring is here in mn and i'm finally getting my bike together after fixing the tranny this winter. the motor's been sitting on my workbench mostly is pieces for a good part of the winter so I plan on putting clean oil in for the first start up, running it for 10-20 min the changing the oil and filter.

I'm thinking about just puting regular 5w-30 in the first strat up since i have plenty of it around and it's alot cheaper than yama oil. anybody think that presents any problem's?
