  1. UPDATE:

So as I was getting into doing some basic cleaning on board and removing the brown sealer as it is covering some corrosion in spots, this (see image below) part broke right where the wire comes out of it and I litterally just sneezed on it. so needless to say thats probable part of my problem. Which now brings the question, what is it and where do I get a new one?

Also are there any schematics out there so I can replace any other parts that decide to break off during cleaning?

    No image attached...

  2. So my side stand cracked and didn't completely brake because my leg just happened to be there to stop Lucy from going all the way down. Was wondering about things to check when replacing the stand. What else could be worn or bent? What other parts might need to be replaced? Can the stand be repaired or do I have to replace it? Where is a good place to get a new one? As it is now, just the lower ear (I guess that would be what it is called) is cracked and the top ear is bent.

  3. I decided I had to go so I rounded up some friends and headed out.

We rode about 40 miles to a little diner where we met up with some others.

From there we took off to the first stop of the run. This is about 1/4 of the bikes there. Lucy is centered in the picture.

    Another shot of the lot.

There was a gent there with the new Eluder. He was kind enough to let me check it out. Not going to lie, I want one!

The following are pics of things I saw there that I thought were cool...

I even got a chance to see @zagger there. (Briefly, he was on his way out as I was on my way in.)

My group never made it to the second stop. We found this.

From there we found some other roads that took us out by some lake and off into the sunset for a few hours. All in all, it was 310 miles of one awesome day.

  4. Thank you everybody for your replies. As seems to be the way of things, our lawn mower took a trip to the big pasture in the sky so it looks like that will be getting replaced before I get a new bike. I can say though that after having test drove the Vulcan 900 and the C50T I am leaning more towards the C50T. I found it to be more comfortable and my wife enjoyed the ride more than on the 900. It may still be in the cards but we have to play with finances a little bit.

  5. In all seriousness now... Will this be an additional bike or is it replacing something?

Lucy is in need of some maintenance (carburetor work, gaskets, water pump, second gear repair, radiator fan, neck bearing, plastic replacement...) so this would be a temp replacement then additional bike. I like the look and it seams comfortable enough.

  6. Found a 2008 Suzuki C50T for a hot deal. Took the wife to see it and she gave me the thumbs up. I have no experience with these. It is shaft drive, water cooled, fuel injected V-twin. Was wondering if anybody here has any thoughts on these or could give me any things to look for before dropping the cash.

  7. And since we're here, I'm having a hard time finding the 20W-40 that the manual specifies for warm weather. Can I use 10W-40 instead? What are you guys using? I tried searching the forum, but I didn't find anything specific for Gen 1.

Most of us run the Shell Rotella T4 15w-40. Stay away from synthetic oils. They make your clutch slip. Also, the starter clutch tends to go in these around 30ish thousand miles. A fella her named Dano makes an awesome starter clutch upgrade.

  8. Can I damage anything by trying to start the bike as it is? I'm guessing this is just to see if it's not seized, right? Also, will the battery in my Kawasaki KLR650 be enough to start the Venture? I know this is something I can research but I'm probably going tomorrow with my trailer. The answers here are very encouraging, except for the part where no one tells me how I'm gonna tell the wife there's no more room in the garage.

Who said you have to tell the wife? I had my 83 for 2 months before I let mine know... She couched me for almost a week but it was worth it... Welcome to the forum! Great people here!

  9. Looks like you guys got dumped on with new snow yesterday (April 15). Green Bay got 2 FEET of snow. Do you guess that this will all melt off in the next 3 weeks? Around Madison we got about 6 inches of snow yesterday but we are supposed to get another 5-8 inches on Wednesday. Looks like winter all over again.

    zag

We got a total of about 32" by us from Friday to Sunday. Drifts were much higher. The whether man says 50's for this weekend. Hoping that it all melts off over the next 2 weeks and we will still be able to make it down.
