I have a new Rock Island M1911 A1 10mm I am going to take it to the range with my Springfield 1911 .45 ACP with a match grade barrel and do a comparison between them.

I like it.  A lot of the 10mm ammo has been down loaded.   So if  you want full enjoyment buy the good stuff.  Underwood is one of the full power.  I am sure any of the premium loads won't let you down.  I just recently got into the 10mm game.  Been thinking of joining for years. I finally did last year.

    Enjoy

  2. Plan for the unexpected which includes a lot, including the weather all the way to a flat tire.

MORE:  Leave with good tires. Take tools you can use.  Invest is a SPOT or similar for emergency if no cell service.  Med Jet is great if you and/or you motorcycle need to be evacuated for any reason.  I had to use it.  If traveling outside USA obtain some hospital insurance that will pay the facility, not you pay and pray you are reimbursed (happened to me).  GoreTex is you friend.  Be very aware of the range of your motorcycle in a worse case and have a good idea where you will get your next fill.  Yep, early on I found out about range.  Use water proof bags to pack your clothes in even if you think your luggage is waterproof.

    But most importantly, enjoy it.

  3. I used PIAA led fog lights also available as a flood or running light and it only requires a 2 amp fuse. http://www.piaa.com/piaa-lp270-led-white-wide-spread-fog-beam-kit-clone.aspx

I tried a couple LED replacement bulbs for the headlight but so far have not been happy with them. I found although they were plenty bright directly in front of you, they did not project very far ahead and I found the road surface lacked contrast almost as though it was white washed so for now I have gone back to a PIAA 5000k H4 Super Plasma Gt-X Halogen Bulb. http://www.piaa.com/store/p/161-H4-Super-Plasma-Gt-X-Single-Halogen-Bulb.aspx

IMHO if you want to go LED for your headlight it is best to get a complete LED assembly. At least then the reflector is designed to properly focus the the LED for proper beam pattern.

    Some suggestions http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=10002&categoryId=13091&pageView=grid&urlLangId=-1&beginIndex=0&langId=-1&top_category=15554&parent_category_rn=13089&storeId=10001#facet:-7000000000000003359766968&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:&pageView:grid&minPrice:&maxPrice:&pageSize:&

From all I have read and experienced you are 100% correct on just using an LED bulb, especially for the main. Your choice is a good one. I am experimenting on my two auxiliary headlights/driving lights (RIVCO dual beam H-4) on my VTX with an LED bulb that is supposed to throw light onto the reflector like an H-4. I put a sealed Daymaker unit in the main which is great.

  4. I went with Truck Lite, truck-lite.com, not cheap but they throw the light and are bright plus use about half the watts. I think I used the 80220, flood work light. They are a PAR 36 like the OEM passing lights but a tight fit.

For the main I went with an HID bi xenon (HI Low beam) from Xenon Depot with a delay relay added so it will not turn on until the key is in the on position for a few seconds. This reduces the on/off/on of it while starting which I understand is rough on them.

  5. Almost has driven me crazier than I already am.

Did some work on vehicles and house I have been putting off.

Go through extra screening to see my doctor.

Thank the good Lord my wife still has a job. I am retired.

  6. I finally installed the trailer hitch I bought from Carbon 1 months ago.

I will not pull a trailer. I wanted it so I could mount a very small box on the back, mainly for non clothes on a trip. I thought of the Pakit Rak but I did not want that large of an item on the rear for fear of overloading it, a habit of mine. LOL

  7. Glad to hear it seems to have worked for you.

Techron concentrate has been recommended to me by some knowledgeable techs.

One time I was at a Honda shop and a fellow came in from Mexico on his way to Americade. His motorcycle was running rough. The knowledgeable service writer told him to put in twice the amount called for, run up the interstate about 10 or so miles at high RPMs then turn around. If that didn't clear it up then the shop would work him in. It did the job.

I use a 12 ounce bottle at every oil change or if MC has been sitting for a while without Stabil Marine 360. Same with all of my cars but use 20 ounces on them.

  8. I want to do a little long distance touring (300 mile rides). I live in Nebraska, do it will mostly be straight country roads. I was set on the Goldwing, and the 1500 wing is more in my budget than the 1800. Then, I came across the RS Venture, liked the looks, and started reading about it. Here are my main questions for now:

    1. I've read that the Venture has more leg room and a more relaxed riding position, which sounds really appealing. I'm about 6', do I don't want to feel cramped. Other than that, how does the rider comfort between the 2 bikes?

    2. Being in Nebraska, we get a more than fair share of wind. How does the wind protection compare between the 2 bikes. At 300 miles, I want to refuce fatigue due to wind.

    3. I've read many posts about the wing lasting well over 100,000 miles, and some lasting over 200k with proper maintenance. How does the venture compare to the wing in this regard?

    Thanks

Yep, 200,000 to 300,000 for Wing. My uncle had one over 200,000. Yes I have heard better leg room on new Venture. That said I know of several folks who are over 6 feet tall riding Wings. I believe there is an after market fix for the leg room.

I have heard a lot of positives on the Venture. However, I just cannot agree with a long distance heavy motorcycle that is air cooled new Venture. Especially in today's environment of less pollution. The temperature is much easier controlled with a radiator. Even Harley went to liquid cooled heads. Of course air cooled has less to go wrong. I prefer shaft drive also. But that is why there are so many choices.

If 300 miles is you touring range you have a lot of choices. I'd choose whichever one turned you on in looks and how it fit you.

  9. They are blowing smoke. Leaking shock will hold air pressure just fine. The oil is for dampening and it will still hold air pressure.

I agree with Freebird here. I had a dealer approach my RSV shock issue the same way a couple of years ago. Mine was already out of warranty so I replaced it myself after the rubber / sealed area failed a couple of months later. Mine was real clear what was happening by then too. I'd be pushing the dealer hard on the warranty repair.

I'll be sure the air is down and return to the dealer after I call Yamaha.

    Thanks guys

  10. I found mine leaking oil last fall - 2 weeks after the five year warranty was to have ended. I took it to the local dealer who, after two weeks, said he couldn't get his "rep" to respond, and suggested I call Yamaha customer assistance. I called and got through to a rep right away. She listened to my story - my second Yamaha (first was RSTD), the shock was obviously leaking prior to warranty expiration, and not a single other warranty claim on this bike in five years. She placed me on hold to check with her manager and came back and said no coverage since it was a "wear item". I explained my last bike had the leaking rear shock replaced under warranty during the five years and she said "sorry".

Sorry, Yamaha, last new Yamaha for me.

I am pretty sure the shock is specifically mentioned as covered under warranty. I have read several posts that it was a warranty item.

  11. Rear tire, rear brake pads. I took it to the dealer to try to convince Yamaha I needed a new rear shock while it is still under warranty (bought new March 2015) before it expired. I really thought with 42,000 miles it would be leaking. I even added a little oil around the bottom of the shock. Yamaha requires a pressure check and it seems to be holding air. Oh well, I still have a couple of weeks. I was told to keep an eye on the pressure then bring it back if it doesn't hold.

  12.

I have the 4 inch barrel, wanted 6 inch but bought it slightly used at good price. It is really not that bad to shoot. It has good balance and a good grip. I enjoy it except when it comes time to buy ammo. Before I bought it I put 50 rounds through it.

I like the big ones. Maybe because my first handgun (after cap guns) was a Dan Wesson 357 magnum in 1972. I still like the 357 magnum so much that I often carry the S&W 340 PD Air Lite 2in loaded with Critical Defense. I also put 50 rounds through a S&W 340 before buying one. 50 rounds of full power 357 magnums in that light revolver, I knew I had been doing some serious shooting. For self defense how many shots will a person have a chance to take?

Of course i had to step up to the 44 magnum before the 500. What can I say, I like big bores, even in rifles. But 22s are fun and cheap.

My son in law bought, I think the 10 inch, 500. He likes his also. I don't care for the long barrel.

  13. My buddy installed those on his Harley. They sure are nice and throw light down the road. I had already installed an HID headlight with Truck Lites in the passing light housing on my RSV. If I had seen his conversion earlier I would have went that route also. They draw even less current.

    Good post.

  14. That is true. I really am disappointed with Purolator. I have been a steady customer for them until the threads will not line up anymore. I ended up with 2 useless Purolator oil filters. At any rate, I switched to the FRAM ph6017 motorcycle filter and have been using it with no complaints at all.

See if you can exchange them for another brand. The Bosch has the same problem so I traded my extras in for Mobil One.

I was using them on all of my vehicles. I won't any longer.

I still have two for my VTX1300R. They still work on it. I still do not understand them changing without at least putting a letter after the number or better change the number.

WIX 51356, NAPA Gold 1358, Mobil 108 I do not know what the number is for the longer one. I used to use the longer Pure One on my VTX and RSV

Go over to the other site Yamaha Venture and Tour Deluxe site. There is a good list of filters that fit. BTW that site will be unsupported in February. I hope someone takes it over. I am too computer ignorant to do it.

  15. Still riding however since September 3 been limited by neck surgery. Each day is better. I still have logged just under 1000mi since surgery. I hope I can get in 5000 before October 20. That is the end of the MS5000 (fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis , MS5000.org. To do that things must get better quick.

I ride my 2012 (bought new in 2015) RSV with 40,000 on it for most long distance rides. I ride my '07 Honda VTX 1300R (bought new in 2008) with 140,000 on it for mostly regional rides.

I did finally ride the Dalton (bucket list for 10 years) for my 70th birthday present. I rented a almost new BMW750GS. I rode it like I had stolen it. I am sure it did not help my neck.

  16. I do not have a conversion but I run an auxiliary tank on both of my MCs. Both have a vent at the top of the fill neck. I ran a hose, vacuum type, from that nipple to the back of the rear fender. I am not sure how your tank is made. There has to be a vent somewhere or a vacuum will be created and either collapse the tank (has happened on MC tanks) or the fuel flow will be stopped. Maybe the cap is vented. My caps are not vented since I have the vent port.

Is the fuel dripping directly onto the pavement or dripping into the trunk then leaking to the pavement. Are you sure the fuel was coming out of the area you tightened. Check for a venting tube. It just does not sound like nor make sense that the part you tightened was designed to be loose and used as a vent.

You might just not fill the tank to the top. Maybe leave an inch below the fill neck. As far as venting if overflow is not an issue a vented cap can be purchased. SandStorm, spunaluminumgastanks.com, is one source since Coyote seems to be gone.

If there is no other vent you probably can add one into the fill hose then attach a small hose to it as I did then run it out of the compartment to the rear with enough length so overflow will clear the trike but not end up on the wheels.

When I visited Hannigan about possibly purchasing a sidecar I inquired about an auxiliary tank. They told me the stopped putting them in their conversions and sidecars. Reason given was fumes. I am not sure that was the reason it was more than likely because of liability.

    I'd give them a call.

If you can't resolve the issue send me a picture of your tank set up. Include the top fill area and where the filler hose attaches to the tank. Also the cap.

  17. Yesterday I returned from a 2300 mile ride to visit some friends in Wisconsin. I cleaned my RSV today. Checked it all over. I examined the condition of my tires, front almost done for. Damn it was hot and humid. I am glad I started early.

My trip plan was to do a SS1000 to Rochester, MN. Then I would spend 3 days visiting friends at two different locations in WI. This would be followed by a ride into the UP of MI, cross The Bridge, then visit relatives in Detroit. After Detroit a side trip to Troy, Ohio, purchase some communication equipment before visiting relatives in SW Ohio. I planned to do a SS1000 home. I did get to visit the friends in WI but I had to abort the SS1000s and the rest of the trip.

I probably should have returned home. My right arm began hurting severely soon after leaving home. It is caused by a problem in my neck which I have put of having surgery for a few years. As long as I did not have my right hand on the throttle I was ok but I couldn't do that for ever, even with the cruise set. So surgery will soon be taking place.

I did have a good visit but the riding to WI and back was the worst I have ever had, too much pain. It was even worse than when I broke my leg in Nova Scotia. At least that day was good weather and good riding until the late afternoon. I did enjoy the county roads in Wisconsin. The ones I was on were in great condition with hills and sweepers.
