  1. Still trying to figure out what to do with this one. The complete motors are going $1500 on Ebay, so I could part it out and eventually profit big. I could plastic weld, sand, polish, maybe repaint and shoot for NADA. It's not a keeper for me because I don't have the appreciation for the extra 30 h.p. though, after riding the 99 RSV I do miss the Jaguar handling of the first gens. Suggestions maties?
  2. Depending on what I decide to do with the ol witch, I may consider the tunable box. Here's how she's sounding so far;
  3. Okay, in the morning I'll do a couple of pea shooter tricks and put a vacuum gauge on her and see where I'm at. Funny, I bought this thing thinking part her out or flip her.
  4. Oh, the prior owner was one Wittie McNeil, representative for sanitation workers during 81 New York sanitation strike. Impressive guy, this one. The world was probably better off with him as a role model for NY young men. I assume his bike got the max motor when it lost 2nd gear, though that's speculation. I also assume for the moment that the problem with getting up off idle is either gunk I missed in the carbs, though would seem like I would have the same obstruction in all 4, or the control unit has gone south.
  5. I downloaded a service manual for the vmax. (this motor is a 2WF meaning 87-96 california built. the advance goes to carb #2, and would seem as though the sync port on #1 should be plugged. It occurs to me that you wouldn't get the most out the motor without using the vmax control unit, though it would be programmed to control spark with vboost. There's a question for the theorists, I have no need for the vboost part of the tach being an old and slow guy
  6. I aquired an 84 VR a few days ago for $350. It was apparently parked full of gas in 2011. after cleaning out the tank and taking the carbs apart for cleaning and getting it all back together it still didn't run right but it's possible i missed some gunk in the passageways, on the other hand the big surprise was that the bike had a vmax motor, minus the vboost. In any case it's still not getting up off the pilot to the main like it should, and I've ruled out major vacuum leak with the starter fluid trick. Should the vacuum advance be plugged into the port on the left front carb, or the sync port on the left rear intake? If I'm not mistaken on the first gen ventures it's the port on the carb, which on this bike had about a foot of hose plugged in not connected to anything on the other end, and the sync port was connected to the advance with a small plastic part inline (check valve? restrictor?) I've tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any advice would be welcome.
  7. LOL, when i first bought my 99 RSV i thought there was something wrong with the suspension because of the low speed handling. I played with tire pressure a bit and got used to the feel eventually, but then I've owned two first gens. I'm 5'9" and about 140, with a 32" inseam. I'm careful where I park. No, I mean really careful. Two months and haven't had to get help backing her yet, but it'll happen. I had to tiptoe the first gens backing and slipped up several times. I can flat foot this one.
  8. Turned out to be a while before I could get back to it. It was the RR. Right now I'm running on one from an 04 vstar and want to order a reliable replacement. Any suggestions on brand and source? (Took her for a test ride Sunday and got back 3 hours later and used up the good part of a tank of gas. I've owned a wing and two ventures. This is the sweetest ride I've ever been on)
  9. When I get home I'll recheck the connectors and start checking for shorts fuse by fuse. I started the stator/rr checks with the battery charged to 12.8vdc
  10. after going through that very usefull step-by-step test of the RR and Stator here's what i got: RR diodes all test good. Winding resistance good and equal on all three winding voltage good on all three (27vac at idle and up to 75 when i rev it, dep on how high i rev. as long as i hold the throttle steady the voltage stays pretty stable.) when i plug it all back together and reconnect battery ground and start it i get 13.9vdc initially, but it fluctuates wildly downward even to below battery charge voltage. when i check ac voltage across the windings with the RR plugged in i, of course get a lower ac voltage but it's stable. (about 10vac) My thinking is that it's a bad RR with good diodes. Does that sound right to you guys? btw this is my first day on the forum and there's a ton of useful info here thanks, MileHi
