  1. Can't talk you from a ledge that I have already been off of. I went from an 07 RSV to a 2010 GW. I feel the same as Eck. While the RSV is a great bike and comfortable, the Goldwing offers more. It took me a while to make the GW comfortable for me. Had to get the highway pegs adjusted just right, handlebar risers helped, and a larger windshield to help with the wind. The handling and performance is far superior on the GW. I just couldn't see buying a new RSV with a 10 year old design.

  2. Ok, looks like I need to post some auctions, but it would help if the donors would send me some pictures of the items, 2 or 3 pictures of each item will do good, I can start posting them and see what we can do to raise some more for the Kids at St. Jude. Thanks to all and especially to Eck for starting the ball rolling.

It will be a couple of weeks before I get home to take pictures of the seat.

  3. Here's another one. Glympse, It's an app that lets someone follow your location in real time. I know a lot of people don't want to let people know where they are. But, for me, I use it so my wife can see that I am still moving and she doesn't have to worry about me being in a ditch somewhere when I'm out for a ride. I just send her a "Glympse" via text and she can bring a map up and see my location at anytime. And she'll have an idea when I should be home.

  4. One that I find useful at work is Bubble Level, Great when hanging pictures or setting leg levelers on tables. Google Earth, Waze, Craigslist, Armslist and fraction calculator get used a lot also.

Speaking of levels, did you know that the iphone compass has a level function? Open the compass app and swipe the screen to the left. Works good for me. i did go to the app store and look at bubble levels. Wow, there are a lot of level apps available.

  5. Another app that I use is the Walmart app. While I hate Walmart it seems that we all have to shop there. I use the app for their "Savings Catcher" feature. As I walk out after check out I fire up the app, hit Savings Catcher and it scans a barcode on the receipt. The app then compares everything I bought to around 48 competing stores and if anything is found to be cheaper somewhere else they refund the difference. Sometimes it's only a few pennies and sometimes its dollars. When I accumulate about $10 I request to get it back. It's free money. You just have to ask for it. I get back about $100 per year and we aren't big Walmart shoppers. This can also be done on a computer without a smartphone app.

  6. Raindar. Gives me weather anywhere. Bonus... It also gives me traffic... Far faster than maps!!!

I looked up Raindar and it is for Android devices only. For weather radar on iOS devices I use Radarscope. It displays NOAA radar sites in realtime. It's my go to app when I am touring and see storm clouds forming. No traffic info though.

  7. I was recently with a group of friends that were all in their 60's and 70's and we got into a discussion about our smart phones. While I don't profess to be an expert on the iphone I have had one since the 3G model and I was amazed at how little these friends knew about their phones and what they could do with them. So I began sharing some of my applications with them and they began to see light so to speak. One person who didn't have a smart phone made the comment that he didn't see the need for one. After our discussion he decided he needed one after all. Especially after I explained how my phone saved me over $200 at Lowes on a dishwasher. After reading other discussions here where smart phones were mentioned I thought it might be helpful to all of us if we shared some of our favorite apps and what they do for us.

I'll start. One of my most used apps is the Amazon app. I am an Amazon prime customer and anytime I need something Amazon is my first stop. Even when I'm in a store I will often price check with Amazon. In the app there is a camera icon in the upper corner that allows you to scan barcodes to check prices. Last Sunday I was in Best Buy to pick up an ink cartridge. It was $19.99 at Best Buy. While in line at the check out I scanned the barcode with the Amazon app and found it for $13.45 and Best Buy will match the Amazon price so I saved over $6 on that transaction. Lowes will also price match with them.

Another price comparison app is Red Laser. It scans barcodes and shows prices from competitive sources. A couple of years ago I ordered a new dishwasher from lowes.com to be picked up in the store. Our dishwasher failed and I didn't want to take time to do a lot of shopping so I just went to Lowes.com found one we liked, placed the order and went to the store to pick it up. When I got there they couldn't find the model that I ordered although the web said they had inventory. So the dept manager felt bad and said he would give me the next better model for the same price. Great I thought. So while standing at the service desk while he took care of the paperwork I pulled out my phone and scanned the barcode on the box. It popped up at Home Depot for nearly $200 less. I then asked the manager about the great deal I was supposed to be getting and showed him the results of my scan. He immediately offered to match that price plus an additional 10% off. I figured that transaction paid for my smartphone plan for a few months.

I use Google Maps daily. Either for trip planning or as a GPS. It's much easier to use than my Tahoe's built in GPS.

I have more apps that save me money or makes life easier but I'll wait for other to chime in with theirs.

  8. I have 4 wifi routers connected in my house. I have the main router that handles all of the DHCP functions and the other 3 are set as access points. I use a unique name on each one. While my main router can reach most of the house, I had the extra routers left over from upgrades and I use them as wired switch as well as a wireless access point. Most of my devices are connected via ethernet cables. I utilize the 4 modems plus two other 5 port switches. But I have no problem getting a strong wifi signal when I need one.

  9. I have something Eck. I have a pillow top rider's seat with the Butler mod. I won't be able to ship it out until I get back home in about 3 weeks. I took it off on my '07 RSV. Lewis, let me know if you can use it.

  10. I want to let everyone know that my web host, 1&1.com, has deleted my two web sites. One of which, traynorphoto.com, I have posted links to from time to time to share photos of various trips. I tried to go to my sites yesterday and discovered some kind of placeholder there. I logged into them with my FTP client and found that all of my directories and files were gone. I contacted 1&1 and was basically told that the website builder tools that I had been using had been discontinued and therefore my sites were deleted. They said I should have received an email. What a bunch of crap. I had thousands of photos from many trips there. I still have all of the photos and some of the site structure backed up. But I have lost quite a bit of the file structure. I'm going to move to a different host before I start rebuilding. So, if you see a link in a thread to pointing to traynorphoto.com, it won't work. Anybody know of a good web host?

  11. I received my mount today. I bought it to use ine truck to hold my phone. It sticks very well but I can't get my phone in a position that I like. I want to mount it on the dash near the radio controls and due to the angle of the stem, I either have to mount it so that the phone is nearly horizontal or facing down. I would like to have it angled toward me. I'm going to have to work with it to find a better position.

  12. It's sad Eck, but Sears is on it's last leg. I really liked Craftsman hand tools and have bought many over the years. Our Sears store closed here a couple of years ago and I can't say that I miss them. Now when I need a tool I've found the Kobalt tools at Lowes to be a good replacement. We have an Amazon Prime membership and most of our hard goods come from Amazon these days with free 2 day shipping. It's rare that I can't find what I need at Amazon.

  13. If you take 60 east from Charleston you may want to stop at Hawk's Nest. And when you get to Hicko and US19 north. Turn south and go to New Never Gorge.

Thanks, we've ridden the New River Gorge area. Some great riding in that area.

  14. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've been to Bar Harbor and the Maine coast but it was many years ago and by car. I'll take the info provided so far and try to lay out a route on one of the mapping sites. This could be good.

  15. For the past 10 years or so my wife and I along with several other riding buddies take a "big" bike ride each summer. Always travelling west from KY. We've managed to ride in all states west of the Mississippi River. Previous trip plans were easy in that we would pick areas like Glacier National Park (twice), the Black Hills, Oregon/N. CA coast, Southern Utah, Yellowstone, Beartooth, Durango, Million Dollar Highway etc. We knew there were well known sights to see and good riding. This year we are thinking about going to the northeast for a change. Maybe Vermont, New Hampshire and possibly Maine. The problem I'm having is that I really don't know much about those states regarding their natural beauty. My group isn't much on visiting museums. We're more into riding and taking in the scenic areas. I'm looking for advice on places to visit that would offer beautiful scenery and good riding. We usually do a 10 to 12 day trip and we'll ride 400 to 500 mile days getting to and from the good stuff. That generally leaves us 6 to 8 days to slow down to 100 to 150 mile days to enjoy the area. We would like to take secondary roads from KY to the north east and try to stay out of the big cities as much as possible. I've been to coastal Maine a couple of times and I've driven through small parts of NH and VT but that was on business and I really didn't look around. Anyone have destination suggestions and possible routes? This would likely be a June/July trip.

    Thanks,

    Dennis

  16. Where in Florida are you going for 3 months? What campground / Park?

    thanks

    Patti

Patti, if you're looking for a place in Florida check out Holiday Out. It's a condo RV park that has morphed into RV pads and permanent homes. About a third or more of the lots are still for RVs. Many of the lots are for rent and have returning renters each year but some are available. Here is the web site and there are rental units listed there. http://www.holidayout.org There are also two other similar parks, Venture 3 and Nettles Island. http://www.venture3.org and http://nettlesislandcondo.com

Venture is adjacent to our park and Nettles is a couple of miles down the road from us.

  17. Dennis, is the red SUV your tow vehicle? If so, what is it? What engine does it have? And then next obvious question how does it do for towing?

    Thanks, Mike G.

My tow vehicle is a Chevy Tahoe with full tow package and 6.2L motor and 6 speed transmission. While the truck has plenty of power to pull and does, I am exceeding the axle and tow capacity. I am 1500 lbs or so over my tow capacity. I did tow from KY to Florida and took it slow and easy and had no problems. I only had to do that once. The trailer stays in Florida and I only have to move it on my lot in the fall and back off in the spring. If I used this trailer for travelling I would definitely upgade the tow vehicle. I'm sure I get a few looks from other RV owners when they see the rig on the road. I don't tow far and I don't tow fast. And in Florida you don't encounter many hills. Although, the 6.2L does remarkably well. When I brought it down from KY I crossed the mountain in TN at 55 mph @ 2700 rpm.

  18. Here's our home for the winter. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/02/dac21cbfd6da6e575c47dae149824fb1.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/02/cd983b7a13931b1d89b0688302e78429.jpg

700 ft to the east is the beach, 700 ft to the west is the Indian River.
