  1. I have always heard that the color white was cooler than any other color. Has anyone experienced the difference in a white helmet other than black or any other color helmet as far as heat is concerned. I'm just wondering if it is enought difference to notice.

you know all of the insulation on the INSIDE of the helmet? what do you think that is there for? there MAY be a slight difference in INSIDE temperature, but no much. and yes I have always worn a black full face helmet here in Texas.

  2. Thanks...

Actually, I have a bike jack (a friend has it now)...but I was under the impression that I had to have an "adapter" for the jack to work with the Venture.

Anyway...I have 2x6 beveled boards and then another board doubled up that looks like a step...and I have used it to do all my VTX oil changes...it's quick, it's easy and it keeps the bike ALMOST level.

    THanks for the info.

    Wally

You do need an adaptor, but my cheap butt uses 4 hockey pucks instead and works just fine. You can also put a pair of jack stands under the rear crash bars to hold the bike up right and steady.

  3. Still doesn't answer they question, why do the HF trailers seem to need the tongue extended while when travelling to M.B. and back all the manufactured trailers I saw on the road the tongue actually looked really short.

By Brake Pad's illustration, I should be adding the center to center wheel measurement to the 1.5 (48+72) making it a 10' tongue if there isn't torsion setup. That's a pretty long tongue for such a small trailer. Could that be right?

I had a harbor freight trailer with a car top carrier, and it pulled just find and never needed to be extended. I also installed and carried a cooler on the tongue, so maybe my tongue weight was always heavy enough that it didn't matter as much.

  4. I have a friend that just bought a '93 Gold Wing trike. He had been trying to get back on a bike for several years but is slightly paralyzed in one arm and had to go with a trike. The front tire is a Dunlop EIII 130/70R-18 and is in need of changing. Are there any alternatives that he could use? It looks as if the trikes mainly upright stance wears out the center of the tire prematurely. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Don

If you can find a rear tire in the size you can try that. The rear tire's have more tread than the front tires, go figure.

  5. Web Bike Worlds article on customer satisfaction for helmets seems to show 'you get what you pay for'. Having owned HJC, Nolan, Fulmer and Scorpion, I guess I fall into that category. The scorpion is by far the best I have worn.

    What do you think?

The report is linked on the right side or click here.

    :322:

Bought my $125 HJC full face helmet when I bought my bike in 05. Been happy enough with it. No major issues besides its hot in the Texas summer heat, but aren't they all.

  6. I have been through alot of posts here and I am seriously thinking of picking up a RSTD or RSV. for the last several years I have been riding a Harley wide glide. I like it enough, but I am now in the market for something a little more comfortable. I have owned everything from Gold wings to sport bikes to on/off road bikes. I was considering buying a new Road King or Electra Glide, but they start out at 21 grand w/no extras. Seems a little expensive for what you get. So here is the situation I am in.

A Harley/Honda/Yamaha dealer an hour North of here has an 07 RSTD sitting on the floor with 22 miles on it. I put 15 of those on test driving it. I believe these sold new in 07 for around 14k and change. They have it marked down to 11,300 and I feel like they may come down a little more. The bike is a 3 year old "new" bike. How do you tell what it is worth?

I am also somewhat concerned that it will seem like a big bulky lumber wagon compared to my WG, but then it is a tourer. Has anybody here regretted trading in a WG or something similar and been bored with the RS?

I am attracted to the RSTD because it seems stable on the highway, has a nice big seat and backrest for my wife, and if I am alone i can take off the windshield and backrest real easily. I was shopping for a bike with EFI, but I am into 70's Hondas so multiple carbs and synchronization doesn't scare me too much. Also, a 5 year unlimited mile warranty doesn't hurt either.

I am also a big fan of customizing my bikes with pipes and chrome. It seems there are alot of options for RS's. Is that the case?

Thanks for taking a look at this post. Sorry I am all over the map with my questions.

    Erik

If you put on some leveling links, it will liven up the handling quite a bit. Also, if you don't ride with the windshield it feels much lighter. I rarely remove mine, but did this week and feels much sportier. I was looking for EFI as well, but these carbs are absolutely no problems. Carb sync's are simple and quick.

  7. All good points. I'll just mention that my RSTD just passed 40,000 miles in two years of ownership. It is a fully capable touring bike.

Things I wish it had that the RSV has:

    • better range -- I am seriously worrying about gas at 150 miles.
    • the trunk -- it'd be nice to have an easy place to stick my helmet
    • the CB -- it'd be nice to be able to join in the fun when on VR group rides
    • the queen seat -- sometimes. My wife is perfectly happy with the RSTD seat, but when she falls asleep, I'd like her to not fall off. It also makes a great location for an auxiliary fuel tank. It'd be nice to make it 500 miles without stopping.
    • the intercom -- although I've got bluetooth helmets that talk just fine

Things I don't miss about the RSV

    • the cassette player
    • the speakers -- my helmet bluetooth's sound is just fine, thank you. I find blaring speakers to be obnoxious, as well.

Things that I prefer about the RSTD

    • The removable windshield -- I stay dry all the time, and the windshield gives me loads of protection. Then I can take it off for a different look and feel. But that giant windscreen is also a chief culprit on my poor gas mileage. (That and my lead wrist)
    • The removable backseat and luggage rack -- I usually leave it on, so as to fly the flag. When I solo tour, I use my luggage on the passenger seat for a backrest. When I tour two-up, the luggage goes on the rack and gives plenty of capacity for a long weekend. But sometimes I like to ride sans pax seat.
    • The headlight bucket -- I like the headlight look on the RSTD, and the fairing does nothing for me. Some of my upcoming projects involve wiring up front, and the fairing complicates things. To be fair, I am considering the HID headlight, and the fairing would be a convenient place to hide stuff.
    • The RSTD exhaust -- although, I am running Road Kings now. I will switch to the stock pipes for my upcoming longer trips. Maybe I'll do that today. Hmmmmm.
    • The pillion seat -- my wife likes the seat, with the ample room and freedom of movement. But, she hasn't rode on the RSV seat. Maybe she'd like that?
    • The look -- I prefer the overall cruiser look to the full tourer look. I think it is cleaner.
    • It's faster -- just sayin'. :stirthepot:

The 1300 V4 is a great platform. It works well for both bikes. I simply prefer the look of the RSTD, and don't miss the added features of the RSV.

    Good luck in your choice!

Don't they both have the same gas tank capacity? Might be a difference from bike to bike, but from the RSTD and the Venture, they should be the same. I do think the massive windshield contributes to worse mpg's, will be testing when I put on my Memphis Shades batwing fairing soon.

  8. Well I guess if you could have posted a link to that it would be helpful... Cuz I just searched their site for a 1/2 hour and couldn't find any mention of what you're saying...

Gee a 5 minute google search turned up this:

    20. Arrow = The arrow indicates the rotation direction of the tyre accordingly to its fitting position (front or rear). In case a rear tyre is fitted on a front wheel, the tyre has to be fitted reverse to the rotating direction indicated on the sidewall. Fitment of front tyres on rear wheel is not permitted.

about 3/4 of the way down the page

  9. Well I decided to go to the darkside. Found that Discount Tire had to order the tire. When it came in their machines could not install on the MC rim. I took it to a MC shop and they mounted ok but could not get it to seat. Took it to Les Schwab (closest to house) and they tried a dozen time to get it to seat with no luck. They tried so much that it started to tear the rubber at the bead. What do I do now. Tire still on the rim but not seated. Do I return the tire (if I could), try to lube up the bead with petrolium jelly (figures less harmfull to the tire) or do I just have to go to a MC tire. Thanks for the help

    Wayde:bawling::bawling:

That stinks. Discount Tire ordered and mounted my BFG Radial T/A no problem. Told them it was for my sidecar. They were concerned about whether or not their machine would work, but no problems for me.

  10. ok im going to wait for skydoc to get better then im sending the calipers out for a fresh rebuild. i tried every thing in the book. i bought a mighty vac flushed the system. new DOT 4 . as thats all the store had on the shelf. took it out for a ride today just up and down my back road here after about a mile of back and forth it locked up again this time 5 ft from my front door. so im lucky there. so my opion is calipers need a rebuild?

it must be sticking? sorry to rant here guys and gals too.

i will be comming into some money in december due to a uncle who passed on.

so a new bike might be in order? but this one will remain with me its gotten to be a chalenge and sooner or later one of us is going to give in LOL

My truck had a similar problem and it was the brake line. Replaced it with a fresh one and problem solved.

  11. I just mounted a Metzeler rear tire on the front of my RSV and went with the arrow... so far so good... I remember reading about mounting it backwards but my tire guy said it wouldn't shed water right backwards so I went with the arrow... I'll keep you posted... I got about 2000 miles so far on it..

Metzler actually recommends on their website to reverse the arrow when doing this.

  12. I've got an 08 RSV, and I'm replacing the brakes this weekend with EBC sintered pads. Which kind of stuff goes on the back of the pads to prevent sqealing?

Seems there are two different kinds of goop, one for organic pads and one for ceramic pads. Which one?

Since I have not changed the brake fluid...is it safe to assume that an 08 RSV uses DOT 4 brake fluid?

didn't realize that there was different kinds of goop for the back of the pads, but it should be stamped on the master cylinder what kind of brake fluid to use.

  13. Hey- Freebird's article says holes 6 5/8 apart OC... this the right distance for leveling links?? In the pic at the end of FB's article, the links looked the same size. Are the Diamond R links holes the same distance apart?

I also saw some premade links at the local bike shop for only $50... Really nice looking, chromed. If I can't get in touch with my machining buddy, I may just grab those since I'm taking the tires off this weekend.

I recently replaced mine and when I layed them side by side thought they were the same, but on further inspection the Diamond R ones are about a 1/4" shorter. Quite surprised at what a difference it made. And you DO NOT have to remove anything to install them, just lift the bike slightly on a jack to relieve pressure on the shock.

  14. So what happens to all that raw gas that still being sucked into the engine and out the tailpipe?? One model of Harley, don't know which, has a dummy exhaust pipe on the left side of the bike. Is the raw fuel dumped into this??? LOL Is there a feature to cut off the fuel in this mode???? Inquiring minds want to know!!

If its fuel injected I would think that they would could stop sending fuel to that injector.

  15. I have a '99 RSTD. The other morning I lost power to the headlight, speedo, and brake light. I found the fuse panel with the 20 amp fuse for the headlight and it looks like it had a big meltdown. I pulled the fuse out with a pair of needle nose pliers ( it was melted and came out in about three pieces). I cleaned up the fuse panel, put another fuse in and all is OK now with the headlight and speedo light but I have no brake light. I changed the bulb and still no luck. Is there a separate fuse block with a fuse for the brake light? The previous owner put a modulator in for the brake light but I don't think that has anything to do with it. Thanks for any help.

are you getting power to the modulator? it could have been the cause of the meltdown.
