  1. I was thinkin same thing. The one I had years ago with springs seemed to bounce alot. We have tractor supply here in Fla, fleet and farm is like it up north. They carry some trailer parts. Looks to have a nice piece of box tube there to mount up springs.

so was it bouncy with springs or did you mean to say without?

  2. I don't trust them weathermen a week out, they just don't have the ability to call it that well beyond 24-48 hours. Actually, weren't they saying as recently as Thursday that this area was going to be cloudy with spotty storms today and likely storms for tomorrow too? (It was nearly cloudless, sunny and warm all day today Just Awesome Riding Weather!)

Hopefully the Boss remembered to order some nice weather for me on my first MD!

  3. I've been making progress, too. In the past week, I got my luggage rack mounted, re-mounted my trunk with a plexiglass plate underneath (the '99 trunk issue!), checked oil and coolant levels, stowed a spare OEM fuel pump in the saddlebag, changed final drive fluid, and picked up a $24.95 sleeping bag from WalMart that packs to a reasonable size rather than the old one that is only a little bit smaller than a 55 gallon drum!

I still need to check the dome tent, put my road tools into a smaller bag, obtain a compact tire pump, clean the bike, and, if it comes in time, install the F4 wide/tall/vented windshield that I ordered.

  4. Well I got the rear intercom working; I removed the trunk and seats to check wire connections and noticed one of the plug-ins under the seat is the same 5-pin as intercom so I pulled it apart and plugged the Chatterbox directly into it and it worked. So that is the feed to the trunk for the rear intercom, obviously. As it turned out all I had to do was scrape/sand the 5 pins in the passenger headset connector (the one by the side of the passenger seat) as they were oxidized so badly that there was no connection.

Sidenote: my wife and I used the intercom for the first time today; about 130 miles. It was real nice being able to talk without shouting and trying to turn my head around backward and saying "What?" "What?" The cheapo chatterbox headsets are good enough for talking but for me, not good for music. We both wear full face helmets so there was no issue with wind noise on the mics. I am glad we did this!

Still have to figure out what to do with the driver cb push-to-talk button not working. Going to look at the parts diagram now....

  5. Good supplement to other instructions (Skydoc's) I have used. Nice to see it in motion before tackling it yourself. I wonder what the printed Barnett instructions are. Looks like he put the discs in all dry where I have been under the impression they should be oil soaked first.

I was amused at the way he torqued the last three bolts on the clutch cover!

  6. The one thing I haven't fooled with too much is the intercom/cb system, until now. I'm having problems so I'll describe them here and see what advice I can get!

I have two cheapo Chatterbox 5-pin headsets, both were NIB and seem to be functional. Problem is, they don't seem to work on the passenger plug, just the driver plug. I switched the parts around and played with the intercom volume on the control head, and with the passenger volume control, but nothing worked for the headset when plugged into the back.

The other issue is CB related, when I hook up the headsets and press talk on the handlebar, nothing happens. When I push the rear talk button, it clicks and I see "TX" on the display so that button seems to work although the mic/headphones still don't work on the rear plug.

So, what do I do to check/troubleshoot the rear intercom plug and front push-to-talk button?

  7. Hey Stuart I can't answer your question, but I am interested to see what everyone will have to say about it.

Also, when your bike is running, in neutral, can you hear noises that go away if you pull in the clutch? I have just noticed that mine is doing that. Not grinding or vibrating, just that I can hear more parts moving when I let out the clutch.

I'll be watching to see what the eggsperts say!

  8. So does that mean that the last two bars (1/4 tank) are really what's in the reserve? Guess I'll find that out after I get the bike back together. Need to do some work on scoot....then once together again...I'll fill her up and see how many gallons it took to get to that 180 mile mark. If it's about 5 gallons...then I know I have about 30 plus miles as well for reserve...good to know

Yeah, reserve is about a gallon. It's hard to get 5 gallons in unless you really run it low.

I'm going to order a windshield soon, too. I had been thinking of going with the wide/tall F4 with vent. I have never had a vented windshield before but I figure its easier to have it and not use it than it is to add it later if I want it after getting the big windshield in front of me. How did you decide on Clearview? I'm not 100% on F4 so just curious?

  9. Hey David, the fuel guage/reserve issue is the same for me on my 99. First I have to switch to reserve, I think around 170 miles, then I get the "F" trip meter while I still have 2 bars on the guage, then shortly after that the fuel light comes on in the dash. I have gone 35 miles on the 'F' meter.

If I ever get around to it, I may pull the petcock and shorten the reserve intake stem because I would rather have the 'f' meter come on to warn me to switch to reserve.

But no hurry for me, because I have become accustomed to leaving it on reserve all the time and trusting the fuel guage and trip meter which have been pretty consistent. Did you vent the filler neck yet (poke holes in it) to allow easier filling all the way up with gas?
