  1. At the risk of having to rebuild mine, whats involved in getting to it and putting it back. It looks like maybe just remove the lever and it will pull right out. Is this right? If that's all I might attempt it today for you. Mine squeaks from time to time and I put a little white grease on it where the handle makes contact. and on pivot bolt

    I thought the last time I had it out the ball end went into the M/C, I'll have to look at that exploded view again.

    The hardest part is getting the dust seal back around the rod.

  2. I left the fender on, no issues removing the swing arm. (As mentioned before). Good opportunity to clean and lube all the suspension linkage needle bearings and of course swing arm bearings.

    It is a pain to get the drive shaft back into the u - joint with the swing arm installed, I recommend inserting the shaft as you install the swing arm, moly paste on splines too. (Not meaning to offend if you already know all this.)

  3. There is a small group of us heading to the Johnstown PA rally at the end of the month. I am looking for input on some nice twistie roads you folks may know of.

    The itinerary is like this so far:

    Thursday : take secondary roads from the Cleveland area to Warren PA. Check out the Kinzua dam regon and ride the 666.

    Friday: head to the flight 93 memorial in Shanksville then to hotel in Blairsville PA.

    Saturday : go to the rally for a short while and ride around.

    Sunday : head for home on back roads.

     

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

  4. I got to ride an M50 for a day and found it to be a nice little bike aside from the aforementioned high speed vibrations. In my opinion it's a great around town and on secondary roads. The only concern I would have is that your kids might outgrow it pretty soon.

     

    Not a big fan of putting anyone on a big bike right off the bat, the VL800 seemed pretty big for the first few years.

  5. I have a 01 vl800 that is basically a c-50 with a carb not FI.

    These are very reliable bikes, sort of entry level if you will. But with proper maintenance it should last you a while.

    People complain about the buzziness of the engine at highway speeds but I make a modified drive to cure that.

    There have been many reports of dry propeller shaft splines on the differential end leading to failure. So if you get it pull the drive and put some moly paste on each end. You'll probably have the back wheel off to check the brake shoes that leads me to mention that the rear brake is more than adequate..

    On the c-50 the stock seat is often replaced with a mustang seat or equivalent and people install pull back risers for comfort.

    The valves need adjusting every 12K miles but they are of the bolt and lock nut type and not to difficult after you have done it once. The engines seem to average 50K miles but of course there are better and worse examples out there, I have 35K mi. With no issues. Timing chain noise on some bikes is also a complaint.

  6. I was thinking of drilling and tapping 1/8" pipe thread holes in the caps and installing swagelock fittings with stainless tubing in between . Then I was gonna remove one of the Schrader valve bodies and install a 0 to 10 psi gauge in there for monitoring the pressure. But riding season came upon us so maybe next winter.

  7. I had the same color Volusia, ended up trading it in on the RSV. I really liked the bike for around town but too much vibration on the highway. Not near as comfortable for the Mrs. I wish I kept it for short runs.

    I swapped out the drive with a c-90 drive (vl1500) it brought the rpms down by 600 in each gear this made the bike very cruizable. The shaft needs to get modified to do this though.
