  1. Thanks Prairiehammer! This is better advice than I had hoped for. It is great to have a resource like Venturerider.org. BTW you Tuxedo looks terriic. Thanks again.
  2. Hi I got some chrome filler pieces off E Bay. The left hand piece came with a bracket that replaces the OE one. To fit it I need to take out the bolts (yellow rings in the pic) the fit the new bracket. I am worried that by loosening these bolts I may do some damage or end up with an oil leak or worse. These seem pretty heavy bolts. The new bracket is hanging on the peg in the pic fyi. Do you think I can go ahead and just take the bolts out and replace them with the new bracket bolts without doing any damage? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. I
  3. You guys are great! I used a test light between the battery terminal and the lead.It glowed dimly for a few seconds then stopped. Within a few seconds I used the light again and no glow. A half an hour later it glowed for a few seconds and then stopped. I am much relieved. It seems it is just charging a capacitor and nothing wrong. Thanks for the help and my peace of mind.
  4. Hi I have just fitted a Clarion radio to my 1987 Venture. The radio plays great on all bands but when I start the motor the crackling starts. There is thin 'whip-like' antenna fitted. Is there an easy fix to cure this interference? Thanks very much.
  5. Hi Your help would be much appreciated. I noticed that when I reconnected the Earth lead to the Battery terminal (-) there was a spark between the terminal and the lead - when everything was switched off. The Positive lead was connected to the positive terminal at the time. Is this normal? I expected a spark only if the ignition was turned on at the time of connecting? I disconnected the earth lead and measured the Volts between the negative battery terminal and the earth lead and it is the same as between the two terminals (+12V). Do I have a short and if so how do I go about finding it? My electric experience is very limited so I hope you will bear with me. Thanks in advance.
  6. Thanks for the advice. I pulled the carbs - (wow what a job to get the cables disconnected). Three diaphragms had pinholes so I have ordered new ones. I replaced the 'o'-rings on the pilot screws ($8 each!) and cleaned all the jets. As soon as I get the diaphragms I'll try it out. Thanks again.
  7. Hi My 1987 Venture idles well. It revs up nicely in the garage. The pilot screws are out 2 1/2 turns and the 4 carbs are well synchronized. I have run a can of Seafoam through it too. However when I am on the road one cylinder backfires and/or misses. When I rev the bike (in the garage} without the air-cleaner I occasionally see a flash in the #2 cylinder (left front cylinder). I have tried opening and closing the #2 pilot by 1/2 turn but this makes no difference. Any ideas what I could try? Many thanks.
  8. Hi I have lost one of the sliding nuts that hold the licence plate on. There are two of them and they fit on the rear fender while the licence plate bolt threads into them. Any one have a part number or alternative way of attaching the plate? I can't find it in the parts listing for any of the models. My bike is a 1987 Venture. Thanks in advance.
  9. I have two bikes and am wondering if there is a way of wiring up the two batteries so that my battery tender can look after both batteries for the winter. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks
  10. Hi This weekend I put the Progressive springs in. I had to leave out the original hollowed-out caps as the PVC spacer OD is too big to fit inside the cap. The springs went in, followed by a washer and the PVC spacer and then the screw-in cap. It took a bit of pressure to get the caps the screw in but it was managable. I havent had the bike on the road but it certainly does not feel as though it will bottom out as before - even without air. Thanks for your help. Bluechrome
  11. Hi I have read many posts about fitting these springs but would appreciate confirmation of the following steps: With the forks compressed add oil to 5.5" from top. Then lift the bike to extend the forks and: - drop in the springs - add the thin steel washer supplied - add the PVC spacer (32mm) (Progressive note 05 for a Venture Std - 'spacer required is furnished with springs') - add the hollowed out cap (adds another 3mm) - add the screw-in the Bolt Cap. I also read a post that said the ideal was a total length of 22". Is that the best length and if so, i guess I need to shorten the PVC spacers to fit? I am using parts from Progressive Suspension (11-1112) on a 1987 VENTURE STD. I ride solo (250lb). BTW my little drain screws at the bottom of the forks seem to leak oil - what gaskets/washers should I be using with these little screws? Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated.
  12. Thanks guys for your assistance. The pics have been a great help. Bluechrome
  13. Hi I have a 1987 Venture and am trying to fit left and right brake hose holders to the front. They were missing when I got the bike. I can't work out how they fit - to hold the brake hose and the anti-dive. Has anyone got a close up pic of these in place - I have searched the web to no avail and the pics in the manual are too fuzzy to see any detail. Thanks
