  1. Yesterday the factory rep inspected the rear diff and said there was no sign of damage. He greased the splines with the Hondal moly 60 and everything is fine. Thanks KiteSquid for the article on moly grease. That was very informative. I don't understand why yamaha doesn't get this info out to the dealers. When you talk to a factory rep you find out about all kinds of info they know but they keep it to themselves. I just don't understand.

  2. I just got off the phone with the factory rep. He is at Tallahassee Power Sports and just finished riding my bike. He hasn't gone into the rear diff yet but believe's the problem is dry splines. He said in the past tires lasted approx 7,000 miles and yamaha recommended greasing the splines each time the rear tire was changed. The dealers also used regular grease on the splines and this solved the problem. Today tires are lasting 12,000 or more miles and with dealers using regular grease it is not getting the job done. Also there were some problems with some rear ends going out because the shims in the ring gear were too tight. After receiving notices from the factory reps in the field about this yamaha supposedly corrected this problem. This rep recommends that the dealers now use a moly 60 lithium grease. He said he uses it the field and at home for his personal use. He likes the honda brand moly 60 grease. Tallahassee Power Sports just purchased the honda dealership in Tallahassee so he asked the service manager to go over to the honda dealership and get two tubes of honda grease. The factory rep is going to re grease the splines and check to see if there is any damage to the rear diff. He also said yamaha will be notifying the dealers to start using the moly 60 grease. I hope this is the problem.

  3. Yes I purchased a new car one time and didn't get home with it. I had to walk about two miles but the dealer corrected the problem and I never had it again and I never saw anyone else have the problem. But with the venture its the same problems over and over. It's hard to enjoy riding a bike when the scream of the read end deafens you. But I know. Get loud pipes, turn up the radio and get ear plugs. And oh yes, pull the rear end and grease it before every trip.

  4. You asked the question so don't get upset with the answers. I hope you didn't make a mistake buying a venture, but I sure did. I believe in telling it like it is and not sugar coating things. I get amazed at the repsonses on here. Like the cure for the chirp and whine. Get loud pipes, turn the radio up loud and get ear plugs. I didn't buy my bike to get loud pipes and wear ear plugs. There is no excuse for yamaha knowing about this problem and doing nothing to correct it. My bike has been at the dealer since June 3 waiting for the factory rep to come and see why after 5 rear ends another one is gone. I go on the harley tech talk and gold wing site daily. Sure, other bikes have problems but they are usually some minor problem isolated to just a few bikes. But the venture has constant problems and yamaha ignores the problem. The last time I called yamaha on June 2, and they said they would call me back. Today is June 25 and I haven't received a call yet. But the ventures don't have problems, you just need to gease the rear end. A friend on mine bought an 04 venture new and was riding to texas and a bearing exploded in the rear end. He rented a U haul truck and brought it back to Georgia cutting his vacation short. It took three read ends before his bike got fixed. But the venture doesn't have any problems. Just turn the radio up loud, get loud pipes and ear plugs. I don't think so.

  5. This is my last response. I have made most people on this site mad so I might as well make everyone made. Yes Gunny Butch is was a rude response but before someone goes off half cocked they need to read. Do you think yamaha would have put five rear diffs, two drive shafts, and a new swing arm if all was needed was to grease the rear splines. That's an insult to the intelligence of yamaha's factory rep to say all it needs is to grease the rear splines. Yamaha has spent more on the parts than I paid for the bike. Do you think yamaha would send a factory rep twice if my bike just needed the rear splines greased. Give me a break. When the service manager at the dealership even says there is no need to replace the rear end again because five is enough to know something is wrong. I didn't ask anyone on this site for their suggestions. The service manager at the dealership and the factory rep know what to look for. I was just letting everyone know yamaha's position of my problem. I thought everyone would want to know in case something like this happened to them. Someone else said they never head a banshee scream. Well I haven't either, but that was the service manager at the dealerships response when he rode my bike before the fifth rear diff was put in. I would never think that someone on this site who has never seen or heard my bike would be able to tell me what is wrong with my bike. Even if everyone on this site saw my bike in person and rode it I don't think they would know more than a factory rep who has probably forgotten more than anyone here knows about yamahas. Read what I said before you start responding. The service manager at the dealership said I had been much more patient than he would have ever been if this had happened to him. Someone else said that no one else was having this problem. How could anyone say that. I constantly read where people are having a problem with the rear end and whinning of the bike. That's it, I am saying anything else. I just wanted to carry on an intelligent discussion about my bike but some of the people reading my post didn't come prepared.

    The whine from the rear can be the rear diff. I had the chirp and whine and had the "I" basket installed and the whine and chirp went completely away. On some bikes it just changes the whine to a different speed but mine was gone completely. After the 16,000 mile service I started getting a clicking in the rear end. The dealer said the rear pinyon was gone and replaced the rear diff. About 5,000 miles later I started getting a whine and thought it was the clutch basket so I asked the dealer if yamaha would replace the basket again. They checked the rear end and said the rear diff was gone again. About 5,000 miles after that the rear starting whinning again and finally got so bad it was screaming like a banshee. I took it to the dealer and the rear diff was gone again. To make a long story short I have 34,759 miles on my bike and have had 5 rear diffs installed. Two of those times a yamaha factory rep installed the rear diffs and drive shaft. My bike is in the shop now waiting for a factory rep to look at it again and decide if they are going to put the sixth rear diff in or exchange my bike for another one. The whine from the clutch basket has never come back at any speed. So, the whine can be the rear end and not the clutch basket.

  7. I know all about the dry splines and the yamaha reps know about it. The yamaha factory reps wouldn't replace a rear end if it was just a matter of greasing it. The district sevice manager for yamaha in Atlanta even called the service manager at the dealer and explained to him about the rear splines going dry after the third rear end went bad. But I guess you know more about it than he does. When the rear end goes out it screams like a banshee. I first thought the I basket that was replaced was causing the noise. At 60 to 70 mph you couldn't hear the radio if it was turned up to maximum volume because of the screaming. When the rear end was pulled the pinyon gear was bad. Besides I just had the 32,000 mile service and the rear end was greased. At 28,298 miles the rear was replaced. If you are telling me after every 1400 miles I am going to have to have the rear splines greased you are full of bovine scatology. I will not own a bike where I have to grease the rear end after every trip. That's not exceptable and it is pathetic that a company would even produce a motorcylce like this.

  8. Most of you have read my previous threads regarding the rear end problems with my bike. At 28,298 miles a factory rep, this was the second time, was sent from Titusville, Fl and put the 5th rear end in my bike. He also put a new swing arm, drive shaft, replaced all bearings, and installed a new rear diff. I took it easy on the bike riding only one up until 33,000 miles. Memorial day my wife and I left on friday morning and rode to Nachez, Ms and came home monday. We rode 1450 miles and the bike was perfect. I was so happy because I thought the problems with my bike were over. Tuesday morning I stared out of my driveway to ride to the office and I heard the rear end clicking and grinding. Monday I called yamaha customer service and told them about my problem and told them I had been patient but it is obvious there is something wrong with my bike and I want yamaha to exchange my bike for another one. They said they would pull the service records and talk to the district service manager, Jim Coddington, in Atlanta and also talke to Ron, the factory rep from florida. They said they would call me back tuesday and asked where the bike was. I told them it was at my home but I would have it at Tallahassee Powersports first thing tuesday morning. I asked the service write up person to check out the rear end and to call me if there were any problems with the rear end. Yamaha never called me but this morning the service manager at Tallahassee Powersports called and asked what he was supposed to do with my bike. I told him and he said he would drive it and call me back. He called this afternoon and said he didn't get out of the parking lot and heard the noise from the rear end and said there was no need to go into it because he knew that noise was the same he had heard with the other 5 rear ends went out. He also said yamaha called him and told him to order another rear end and install it. He told them there was need to waste any more time and money doing that because it hadn't worked the other 5 times and there had to be something wrong with my bike. Yamaha then told him they were sending Al Hatcher, another factory rep, to look at the bike. The bad news is it will be two weeks before Al can get to Tallahassee. I met Al last year at the Myrtle Beach rally at the star exhibit. I talked to Al and when I told him I had a 05 RSV and was from Albany, Ga he knew about my problems immediately. He said there had several discussions about my bike within the service rep circles. I called yamaha afterwards and told them I had been very patient and waiting two weeks wasn't exceptable. The customer service rep said that was all they were going to do. I asked her to get me to the next level of service reps and she put me on hold and came back and said that was all they were going to do. I told her I would get with an attorney and see if I could take legal action. She said don't you threaten me. I told her it wasn't a threat that it was a fact. I knew there wasn't any need to get my self upset and argue with someone with no authority. She did say that when the factory rep comes by in two weeks, that after his inspection they will decide whether to exchange bikes or try to repair my bike again. In the past I have bragged about yamaha standing by me and never backing up when it came to repairing my bike but never again. I will spend the next two weeks deciding on whether to get a gold wing or ultra classic.

    I had the same problem. A womp, womp, womp sound. Yamaha replaced the rear diff under warranty and when I got the bike home the sound was still there. I took my bike back to the dealer and they found that the rear tire was cupped. Put new tires on and the sound went away. I know your bike is new and the rear tire shouldn't be cupped but what you described is exactly the sound my bike had.

  10. Every time I get on my bike I wonder, is today the day I will go down? When my wife is on the back I am concerned for her. If something happened and she was killed or lost a limb I don't know if I could ever forgive myself. But I also know that the only way to be sure nothing happens is to stay in the house all the time. I can't live my life and not enjoy something I love. A friend on mine recently had a friend come down to Georgia from Maine to get out of the cold weather for a while. They were on the golf course enjoying a round of golf and the guy from Maine started to swing his club when his feet slipped and he landed on his back on the concrete cart path. He has been in a coma since and the doctors have now said they have done everything they can do and it is in God's hands. Would you quit playing golf? A friend on mine was in an auto accident this week and one person was killed. Would you quit driving a car. I am still concerned everytime I ride my bike but I can't stop living.

  11. I received my laptop from dell and I have to send it back. I wanted the new clear screen. I think they call it the ultra bright. It is $150.00 more but if I am going to spend the amount I spent for the laptop I want the best screen. I would have thought the sales rep would have explained the difference in screens and asked me if I wanted the ultra bright.

  12. I am glad to see some of you take a laptop with you without any problems. I just purchased a Dell latitude D830 and a docking station so that I can use it as my workstation on our office network and then take it with me when I go out and call on motorcycle dealers. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I currently have a Optiplex mini tower I use as a work station and the dell sales rep said the D830 would run just as fast on our network. I purchased an accident insurance plan that is $170.00 for three years in case I damage the laptop. It is supposed to be delivered today so I guess I will find out if it works as good as I need it to.

    You need to find an independent agent in your state that specializes in motorcycle insurance and get quotes. The quotes listed here don't mean a thing if they aren't for your state. Some companies are competetive in one state and the highest in another state.

  14. Progressvie Insurance Company has never been comepetetive on the 2nd gen venture. When they recently notified me that they were having a rate revision that was a 5% reduction I got excited but that excitement changed to disappointment very quickly. When I purchased my 05 RSV in 2005 progessive's rate was over $900.00 per year so I placed my coverage with another company at $502.00 per year. I am carrying 100/300/50 liability, 100/300/50 uninsured motorist, 10,000 medical payments, 250 deductible on comprehensive and collision and roadside assistance. After the 5% rate reduction my rate for this coverage with progressive would be $1,658.00 per year. I called progressive and told them this was not a rate reduction. I also quoted an 08 Ultra Classic anniversary edition and before the reduction the annual rate was $528.00 per year but after the revision it is over $900.00 per year. The product manager in the home office asked me to fax several recent quotes I had done to her, yes it is a female, and she would get back with me. I faxed the quotes and when I went to the international motorcyle show in Atlanta she, the product manager, was there. She said progressive had been losing money on the touring bike line and increased the rates for touring bikes but lowered the rates on other bikes. There are two things companies look at when determining rates and these are the loss frequency and loss severity. She said both of these had increased on touring bikes. She also said that before the revision they had all the harleys in one catagory but were seperating the touring bikes and increasing rates but were lowering rates on the fatboy and softails. I was surprised because I would have thought the touring bikes would have had the lowest losses because normally you have mature riders that aren't hot rodding there bikes but this is not the case. Anyway I re wrote my coveage with another company at renewal on February 17 for $409.00 per year. If any of you in Georgia are insured with progressive get ready for a rate increase. If you would like to see what other company's rates are let me know and I will be glad to quote you with the top seven companies in Georgia.

  15. I rode to panama city florida last year with several of my harley buddies. On the way home I was riding in the back of the group when the leader on his ultra classic kicked up to over 100 mph. One time we passed a car and I got up to 105 mph but was right on the bumper of the street glide in front of me. I guess they thought I wouldn't be able to keep up. When we got back home and parked the guy on the street glide said "man your bike will really go, it must be an 1800." I said no it is only a 1300. He said wow.

  16. I don't really know the problem. At 28,000 miles yamaha sent a factory rep to look at my bike. He was puzzeled as to why my bike was eating up rear ends. He replaced the swing arm and every part from the swing arm to the rear including the rear diff and drive shaft. I now have a little over 30,000 miles and the bike is perfect. I am holding my breath hoping I don't have any more rear end problems.

  17. Until last week I had an open trailer. Someone stole it from my son's yard at night. It was a 6' x 10' that a company here builds to haul motorcycles. I paid 900.00 for it new. I did pay a little extra to have it enclosed around the railing. This was recommended by the builder to keep mud and other objects from coming off the tires and hitting the bike. I never had a problem with anything from the rode hitting the bike. I used it more for hauling other things than my cycle. Lawnmower, lumber, pinestraw etc. I would like to have an enclosed trailer but will probably buy another open.

  18. When I first saw the unigo I thought that would be the best trailer to get. I don't have any experience with it but some of my goldwing friends say there has been a problem with the fiberglass cracking. I can't say first hand, just repeating what my goldwing friends have said.

  19. I hope they put a better radio and speakers in the 09 venture. I didn't realize how bad the speakers were until some of my friends go ultra classics. The radio in the harleys put yamaha to shame.
