  1. I have a 2008 RSV with pretty low mileage, so it should run for my lifetime.  However, I have been considering replacing it because of its age and a concern I may not be able to keep it running dependably.  I have been looking at the Indian Challenger/Pursuit bikes.  I can't really afford it, but could maybe get one paid off by the time I retire.  I hope not to age out of riding for some time, but I'm aging out of performing a lot of maintenance on them.

I used the speed clips and in 12 years they've never come off.  Much better than the OEM plastic.

Here is the tech article to fix the chrome piece in front of the windshield -

Thanks, I've read that before.  The longer tabs that the fairing screws pass through at either end of the trim piece are the ones I've tried to repair.

Windshield trashed. All bolts went in my bolt bins for my use later. OEM lighting. I do have a Clearview medium height vented with light gray tint shield. I bought it new and used it one afternoon and decided I wanted a taller one. I installed a large and put the medium back in the box.

How is the chromed plastic windshield trim piece? Tabs are broke off mine, its just resting in place.

Thanks Cimmer:  I will check that out.  I am just working on a 1981 Honda 900F, doing a complete restore.  It is now reassembly time so I am working on that and then I will put my full attention to the Venture.

    Appreciate the input

You should share some pictures of your Honda project with us.  I have a '81 CB750C that I'm trying to get to run.  Many of us like all bikes.

Actually, I do think many riders are downsizing. Take a good solid look at the new Royal Enfield 650 Super Meteor. It's coming to the US this summer. A solid, well made cruiser thats taking the motorcycle media by storm. Its a simple, humble well built bike. Even has ABS and Brembro type brakes. But a strong motor, simple instrumentation (reminds me of the VStars), and solid fit and finish. With an estimated price tag of around $8K, it should sell very well here.

I go on one long trip each year where my RSV serves me perfectly, but the rest of my riding is all small trips and local.  If I could afford a second bike I would like something smaller and easier to throw around as I'm getting older.

Don's recent thread about Yamaha's future in touring bikes and ,indeed, the very future of large touring bikes got me to thinking. I still cant help but imagine hybrid GAS/ELECTRIC being the future. After having put a fair amount of riding on our E-Bikes I truly do think if Mom Yam would come out with a Hybrid Touring Bike that would get a consistent +100 mpg and not have to stop for recharging like a full electric vehicle has to that the youth of today would support it in sales. What do you think? As it stands right now, I think the large touring bike days are dim. I hope not cause those were some great years.

I agree that a hybrid would work well for a touring bike, but the difficulty of building the drivetrain into a bike frame would be a challenge.  Great gas mileage and excellent torque is appealing.  I would also like to see smaller all electric bikes becoming affordable and designed for comfort (all of them now put you in racer position).  I would love to commute to work on one.

I always wanted an old school 750 Honda chopper with a extended springer. Pretty much like the one pictured

I am sure it would be terribly uncomfortable but back then it wasn't a real consideration.

BTW: In my neck of the woods (Minnesota) you never painted a bike green, never, never, never!

I always wanted one of those also.

    Hey Don,

This one has really hit close to home with me, my friend! Our "Old" property had acres of grass and when our daughter went off to college (To hunt for a husband!) we downsized! It's been 12 years, and now my wife Jean is longing for a condo or something with NO grass, NO scratching snow off of the walkways, and she says "Room Service would be nice!" LOL!! Because of my shop on the property, I'm not ready to give that up just yet, but there MAY come a day when the creative juices aren't flowing any more. JUST NOT YET! I can fully understand why you would like to make your life a little easier, and in my opinion, you deserve it! Do what you feel is the best thing for you and Eileen, and I am sure everything will work out for the best! My dad used to say, "If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!" He was a wise man, as are you Don, I'm sure you will make the right decision. Just don't forget to give us your NEW Address!

    Earl and Jean.

My wife has been talking about a condo for a few years to ease with maintenance, but I need parking and garage, not ready to give up bikes.

OK folks.  Here's the thing.  Many of you have met my son Dylan at past maintenance days.    He has let me know that his finance's mom and day have lost their home in. Florida as a result of the hurricane.   They are retired and living on a fixed income and are in. dire need of help.  Alyssa, my son's finance, has set up a Go Fund account to help them and though I have made a donation, I know it's not nearly enough.  So I have been trying to figure out a way to further help.  I know that many of you would help for nothing but I don't want to ask you to do that for a family that none of you know so I've come up with a plan that I hope will raise some money for them.  For each of you that donates at least $10.00, I will add a year to your membership here.  That means that you are actually helping them for free.  If you donate $20.00, I will add two years to your membership.  So this will still cost me money but at least it won't be a lump sum out of my pocket.  So if you wish to help, please go the the following link and make your donation.  This will help them and will, in the long run, not cost you anything.  Sorry but up to two years free membership is all I can afford to offer.  So $10.00 will get you an additional year and $20.00 will get you two years.  You actually save a couple of bucks on your membership dues.  If you choose to donate, just reply  to this message that you have done so and I will add the time to your membership.  If you can help, that would be great.  If not, I totally understand.

I made a donation, but do not want the membership discount.  I hope they recover ok.

Dealing with other forums makes me really appreciate everyone on here. I was searching through another forum and before I could find the answer, I had to weed through all of the comments chastising the original poster for asking the question instead of searching. I understand that searching before asking is a good thing, but instead of 5 pages of negative comments someone could have given the one sentence answer or at list posted the link to another post.

With that said I need to be better in answering post, even if they have been asked 1,000,000 times.

I started following this group shortly after buying my bike new in 2008.  I rarely contribute (because I'm kind of a moron), but have learned more from my fellow riders here than I can ever show my appreciation for.

Uh oh, look what I started...

The harley livewire thing is actually pretty interesting.  HD spun Livewire off as a standalone company, rumor has it someone thought it didn't fit the HD "image" and would turn off their loyal customer base.  Well lo & behold, Harley now sells a Harley branded Livewire and I've seen two in the last week on the streets.  Perhaps common sense prevailed and they realized growing their loyal customer base with a variety of offerings is how to grow a business.

I actually talked to a youngster over the summer who was on one, charging it at the nearby grocery store's charging station.  I would say he was mid-20's and he could not stop grinning ear-ear as he raved about how much fun it was.  He said he could get 140-160 miles range, depending on where/how he was riding.  Its sport bike ergonomics is definitely not for me, but when he zipped away with nothing more than a Jetson's like whir, I was in lustful awe.  I will plead the 5th on any immediate weiner proportion changes that may have occurred.

They are clearly marketing them to a much younger rider than me.  I appreciate sport bikes (gas or electric), but can't ride them.  I'm old, tall and fat with bad knees.  If they make an affordable one with an upright, feet-forward sitting position, I would love one.

With electric bikes they could play artificial  Harley clatter through headsets in their helmet and not desturb anyone around them. But I guess that kinda defeats the purpose of feeling like your impressing people around you .

But if only they can hear it, it doesn't make their wiener look bigger.

This company is about 25 miles from me.  They started up in the mid-2000's and were originally making smallish dirt bike style electric bikes.  I've occasionally checked their website over their years to see how they were advancing and if they had anything more appealing to me.  They've steadily moved from a marginally marketable proof-of-concept to their newest bike, in the link above, which genuinely gets me excited.  The Harley Livewire does also.  I saw one recently at the grocery store and the way it silently sped away was so Jetson's like, it was awesome.

I don't know how truly 'green' these things are, as we've previously discussed.  If they are great, that's a bonus, but not my main focus.  If not, they are still very cool technology advances packed into motorcycles that at least look appealing to me.  They again are very pricey, win-the-lottery purchase bikes, but cool as heck, nonetheless.

Keep an eye on Zero, they may well be one of the first to come out with an all electric touring bike, based on the trajectory they've been on since they started.

I want someone to make an electric motorcycle I can sit upright on with my feet in front of me, I can't bend myself onto sport bikes.  Get a simple one under $10K and I'll commute on it every dry day.  I really like that technology is advancing, there's a way to go and I might be too old before it gets affordable.

I don't have any experience with BMW bikes, other than one test ride I did back in the 90's.  I think it was a 1200 boxer, but don't remember the exact model.  The back-forth vibration was just weird to me and it was a very short test ride as a result.  But I have known and met many BMW boxer engine riders who love them.  I just thought it was interesting that they saw a market for the big touring bike & developed one.

I know there was a recent discussion on Indian/Polaris and some history there (which I was unaware - thanks), but man, that Pursuit is looking like one darn sweet bike.  I starting thinking about the Challenger a couple years ago when I saw that you could add a trunk.  The Pursuit is built off the Challenger, but with some new features.  Pricey for sure, but other than it having a Yamaha V4 engine, it checks all my boxes.  Of course, that's on paper and I have yet to even see one in person, much less ride it.   Its kinda like wanting to ask out that pretty girl, but then what if she says no... haha  Girls & motorcycle, so many parallels...

I recently test rode both pursuit and challenger models.  I was really impressed, the power was effortless and the ride really solid through curves.  I think they handled better than my RSV and would run away from it.  they sit lower to the ground and I'm kinda tall, so that's the one thing I like better about my Venture.  I bought a lottery ticket on the way home from test rides, that's the only way I could afford a 35K motorcycle.

Polaris is not a company I would get involved with on any level. Test rides are still fun though LOL.. Puc

    ** to quote WIKI
""The 1999 and 2000 Victory models experienced serious transmission problems, even with bikes with considerably less than 10,000 miles. This has been corrected with minor revisions in 2001 and a complete redesign in 2002. But, according to Wikipedia, Polaris was aware of the problem with the false neutral transmission from the beginning, and yet - Polaris did not correct the transmissions in the 1999 and 2000 models and to date has not supported the owners of those bikes by replacing an apparently faulty design."""

I wasn't aware of the Polaris business issues, but I did know a few people who rode Vics, loved them and felt abandoned.  I'm too poor to buy any of these anyway and I really had fun riding them.  Hoping the local Harley dealer does a day like it so I can ride some of those also.

  16. On Saturday, the local Indian dealership hosted the factory test ride crew.  I rode six different bikes.  The new Indians are really nice, the ones with the liquid-cooled engine are great to ride and all the bells and whistles on the fairings are really cool.  If I could afford a bike, I'd consider the Pursuit or Challenger to replace the RSV.  When I got back on my '08, my first thought was "this as a really comfortable bike!".

Let me know how it goes...

I only find a few hours a week to try to work on it these days.  I traced the electrical problem to the pulse generator for cylinders 1 and 4 (pick up coils on the crankshaft).  I bought a used assembly on ebay.  This picture is taking the old one out, I just got the new one installed/routed and hope to start putting parts back on this week.
