  1. Thanks for the prayers everyone. I am a little battered and bruised but I'm doing fine. Went to the Dr. today and no broken bones or any severe damage. I do have a slightly pinched nerve in my left hip due too swelling, but that should go away in a few days. The doc put me on some pain pills and took me off of work till Sunday. Now I'm just gonna lay around the house and get better... Then worry about how to fix the bike.....

  2. I bought a gauge set like the one pictured a few weeks ago from Dennis kirk for $89 with free shipping. I've used gauges on all of my bikes over the years and found that they are the easiest to work with, and they last for many years.

  3. A friend loaned me a set of vacuum gauges to sync my carbs. I noticed that one had a needle well off zero and another was slightly off (He hasn't used them in a few years.). There seems to be an adjustment screw (Just a guess on my part.) on the face of the dial but there's no way to get at it. I emailed the company, asking if there was a way to remove the face cover to get at the screw. They replied that the units (Actron) are factory sealed and if they are off zero the unit needs to be replaced. I wasn't impressed with the company's reply. I seem to remember reading a thread on this forum that talked about zeroing out the gauges with an adjustment screw so I assume a better quality gauge would have that capability. Now I'm thinking of buying a set of Emgo gauges to do the work and was wondering if anyone had experience with these and if they knew whether or not they are adjustable.

I have this same set of gauges. That is an adjustment screw on the face. All you have to do is carefully remove the plastic cover by gently twisting it:301:

  4. It sort of looks like you have a couple of the diodes that are completely separated. If this is the case, odds are that the IC's are blown also. These are proprietary IC's as far as I know. Certainly worth a try to replace diodes, but don't get your hopes up.

I think you have a paper weight there.

Your stock options are limited to an 84~89 Venture or an 85~89 VMax TCI.

Believe it or not the bike will run with this unit in the bike. I just decided to take a look at it to see if maybe that's why it was running a little different from every run I went on.:lightbulb:

  5. Best advice i can give you for the gas cap is to try some PB Blast. Spray it around the lock and wait overnight to give it a try. If that dont work i myself have jammed a screwdriver in the lock and turn it. you will have to replace the lock but it will open up

  6. Last week I tried replacing the bad diodes in my 83, no luck. Tci was already toast, waiting for funds now for ignitech.

Silverado, I would love to get the ignitech unit, but the only way that is gonna happen for me is if they accept a payment plan.. lol. So far if it could go wrong it did for me this year. My funds are extremely depleted.:confused24:

  7. Well I dont think Im gonna be able to repair my TCI. Once I opened it up all the way and looked at the other side of the board im pretty sure its toast. Ill upload a pic or two of it tonight. Thanks for all the suggestions though guys. You were a big help. I even found everything I needed to do the repair. The only thing left to do was stop and pickup some solid core wire..:depressed::depressed:

  8. not really sure. from what I could see just trying to look under the board without undoing the solder to take it out they dont look to good. it looked like one was gone. or at least there is something that is gone anyway. just u stub is sticking up off of the board

  9. Do not use a big soldering gun, you will overheat the board and make it worse.

Use a small soldering pencil under 40 watt.

Use solder with lead in it, not the modern lead free junk.

Use rosin flux, not the corrosive stuff made for plumbing.

The worst that can happen is it still wont work.

I will see what I can pick up in the morning. This one still works just not to its capabilities

  10. In trying to find my Gremlin I decided to take a look at the TCI on my 84VR. Well I just may have found it. Part of the board is badly corroded I can see at least one broken connection and what looks to be a few loose ones. give it a gentle shake and something rattles. Does anyone have one laying around they could give up fairly cheap? Im desperate. Being this is my only transportation to and from work at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated...:fingers-crossed-emo

  11. I am going through a similar issue with my 84 VR. Check your carb sync and make sure your carbs are all seated nicely all the way down in the boots. I found that my #1 and #2 carbs were popped up and not seated all the way. Once I put them into place and got another carb sync done she started running better. I am still waiting to see if its a lasting cure. I do need to sync again though after what I'm pretty sure is sabotage by a psychotic neighbor. I'll post my results next week hopefully...

  12. I have been having fuel mileage issues and irratic running on my 84 VR. one day i would get about 40 mpg and the next day I would get 34 mpg. It would run nice and smooth for a day or two and then run ok but not that great. Ive had the carbs synced twice thank to Orlin. And I really appreciate him doing that for me the first 2 times. Still didnt fix it though. So today I decided I was gonna try and find the problem and check on a couple other things. What I found was that the #1 and #2 carbs were not seated all the way down in the boots. Once I got them seated and fired it up it was running extremely rich, so once again I was off to Orlins for another carb sync. Ran great on the way home afterwards. It felt like a completely different bike. And while at Orlins he discovered a few spots where cords were starting to show on my front tire so while I was there we swapped my tire and rim for one in better condition. Thanks for looking out for me Orlin...... I will let you all know at the end of the week how its running. I will be filling up with a fresh tank of gas after work in the morning...:fingers-crossed-emo:cool10:
