  1. I have about 5,000 miles on my set of Shinko tourmasters on a 1st gen and so far they are great. I don't know if they will make it pst 10,000, but for the $140 I paid for the pair, it seems a good deal. They have a good weight rating and are still handling road irregularities and rain better than I expected.

  2. I know they are not a popular brand, but I put a set of Shinko Tourmasters on my first gen and they are holding up well. They are running at max pressure stated on the sidewall, and handle great dry or wet. They are not fazed by tar snakes or seams and are running quiet so far.

I only have about 5,000 miles on them, but the wear is not beginning to show yet. I would be happy with 12-15,000 life for the price of them. They ran me $140 for both, delivered to my door.

I'll let the community know how they are towards the end of their life. I will be satisfied as long as there are no surprises.

    Ride on!:cool10:

  3. My last ride through Chicago on two wheels was shortly after I bought my '82 XS650. I was in the Navy in South Carolina and getting ready to become a civilian again. I had a nice three day trip to the north coast of Wisconsin, except for the butt clinching ride through the windy city. All the bypasses were under construction, so I had to go straight through. No Fear!

  4. I bought the IS-33 this spring. Took the outer shield off for the summer. Love it so far. I may try denting the forehead area in a little. I get a little sore after 2 hours or more, but not that bad.

I did make the speaker pockets a little bigger for the J&M set that come on my 1st Gen, but others may not have to. I also added a quick release for the chin strap. Would have liked to have a silver color, but black will do.:322:

  5. Unfortunately, a lot of the local stations have 10% ethanol in the lower grades. The only way to get "REAL" gas is to step up to premium (usually 91). I end up getting the premium for the lawn mowers, tiller, bikes and snowmobiles. Regular for the cars.

There is one station only about 5 miles out of my way, near where I work that has regular 87 octane without the dreaded alcohol enhancements. I head that way quite often when I commute on the bike.

Then there is always SEAFOAM! :cool10:

  6. For only the second time since I've owned my '90 VR I heard the fan come on. It sounded kinda loud, so I decided to investigate. I found the #4 plug wire with a big chunk missing. It must have been rubbing for a long time to chew through 50% of the wire and loom.

This was the easiest fix I have done on this bike, so far. I was kinda surprised the cylinder was not missing. Nice to have a quiet fan, too.

  7. Kevin, it's unbelievable how you came up with this information!:)

I thought my lights were the originals, since I had the original order paperwork with the bike, and they look right (except for the KC soft covers). They do a good job of lighting up the sides, though, so I do want to keep them.

I'll start a search with the information you provided and see what I come up with. In the meantime, they still work and will probalby stay covered most of the time during daylight hours.

Thanks for all your help, and let me know if you end up finding an extra lens.

  8. I got a chance to look at bike B today, and it was not in very good shape, after all. I seriously doubt it only has 23k on it. It must be 123k. There were a lot of cracks, adhesive and extra screws all over the plastic. The bottom of the instrument cluster had a bunch of adhesive on it as well.

The aluminum engine cases were very corroded and pitted. Even the aluminum on the handlebars is corroded. Some of the side panels were loose (probably broken posts) and had some broken vents. Trunk had cracks.

I think I am going with the first one. I drove it today and it ran without any problems over a short 6 mile run. I may be able to get the battery and tires for under $250. If I can get that off the asking price, I'm in.

  9. New to the organization, but have already learned a lot. I am looking at a couple of 1st Gens, and would like some guidance to make my decision.

Bike A is a 1990 with 25,000 milesand a lot of bling. It has light bars on the side cases, trunk and front fender. It has KC driving lights, brake rotor covers, side case luggage, all the helmet controls (in a bag, not on helmets) and original tool kit and service manual. He even has a cover for it, but it has not been used, because it is really dirty. It is missing one button on the handlebar radio control, and has a piece of fairing broken where there are wind deflectors bolted on. The battery is weak (original type with sensor), but when charged it started and ran fine. Tires are 8 years old and both are less than 50%. It was mid 40's, so it took full choke for about a minute. Owner wants 3,500 for it.

Bike B I have not seen in person yet, but it is a 1989 (same color as A) with 23,000 miles and was in for service this winter. Owner states that ignition module and coils were replaced, along with "full tuneup". I will get the chance to see receipts when I go to check it out. This one has no extra ornaments on it, but it does have drivers backrest. PO passed away and the family fixed it up to sell it. It has a new battery (don't know what kind yet) and tires are 75%. The pictures look really clean. This one can be had for 3,000.

    Which one? :confused07:
