  1. Good day to all. I just bought an 89 VR with only 37K on it. I have it in the shop but the guys way behind so I want to take a crack at fixing some issues myself.

    1. First is an oil leak from where the stator wires come through the engine block. I figure this is due to an air tube of some type being blocked and creating back pressure, but I could be wrong. Any feedback on this would be welcome.

    2. Runs pretty rough. Is it OK to run SEA FOAM through it or put this in the carbs and let it sit then drain it out. I've seen other videos of people doing this to their bikes and it seems to work.

  2. So I went on a morning ride through the country side this past weekend. I'd had the cruise on because I seem to fight numbness in my right hand. Was only going around 40mph, and as I was coming to a right hand curve I went to put my hand on the gas when the bike just died. Took only a second or two when I realized I'd hit the kill switch. I turned it back on as I finished the turn and it came back to life with a loud "BANG". Sounded like a gun went off. Well there was a guy, with his back to me along the road, strapping down his 4 wheeler as I went by. I did see him jump out of his skin. Not sure who was more surpised, him or me.

Anyway, it was a good laugh for the morning.:stickinouttounge:

  3. After reviewing most of the posts on this issue I decided to take the time to resolder the entire circuit card. I did attempt to fix the ones I thought needed it, but, at the time I had a pretty poor soldering iron.

So I took the time, and guess what, it works great:-) Feel blessed that it works. I was not having any luck finding simple schrader valves to put in the air lines.

    Great advice. Great web site.

  4. Thanks Bert2006, but I'm trying to find a place/link for the schrader conversions so I can put them on the shock air lines. I've been researching all day, and can't seem to come up with anything.

  5. Gentlemen,

So what's this seat mod we're talking about. Tried to find a link for it. My 86 seat is just the pits. Was going to buy a gel pad but wanted to see what the todo was about from Rick First.

    Thanks

  6. So if I'm going to eliminate the onboard compressor all together and install progressive springs in the front. How do I go about putting air in the shocks. Sorry, sometimes I just can't picture it.

  7. Is the new tire you put on the front tire, you were not clear on that. If it wasn't, cupping of a front tire that otherwise is in good shape will degrade handling.

Something else to look at is the rear suspension. Check that the shock pivot links are good. Also the rear swing arm can cause handling issues. Verify there is absolutely zero play in the swing arm. This can sometimes be corrected be servicing the swing arm bearings and properly setting bearing torque.

Air compressor is optional, most non Royale ventures did not have a compressor. The shocks/forks can still be aired up with the installation of a Shrader type air fitting from a non compressor equipped bike. These were most common in the MKI models (83-85).

Gary WHERE DO I ATTACH THE AIR FITTINGS?

  8. I have an 86 VR. The problem is the front end shaking over 65 MPH to the point that I cannot ride it. It has a new tire on it and correct air pressure.

    1. The air ride compressor system doesn't work. Does this matter?

    2. Seems to ride fine under 65, but when I'm going slow over bumps the front forks feel like they're bottoming out. So I'm trying to figure out if I need to rebuild them. Is there an easy way to tell?

    3. I don't plan on fixing the compressor system. Any recommendations on modifications I need to do: I.E. unplug the anti-dive and such.

    Thanks and Happy New Year.
