Recently I was given a 2000 Venture for helping a friend move, catch is, there is a hole in the top of block behind the left rear cylinder. I get it home, make a quick table and put the bike on it and begin to pull the motor. I drain the oil and only coolant comes out. After talking with a dealer who informed me that any engine from a royal star of a given age will make a great motor to swap. I go to ebay and find a 96-00 royal star motor. It showed up today and I noticed one thing. My bad  motor has a hose connection at the top of every exhaust manifold. The replacement does not. I spent some time here and believe this is part of the AIS system? So, what I would like to do is verify that yes, this is the AIS system, and that it is ok to use the replacement motor without out the AIS system and not switch out the heads. If I can do this, can  completely delete all of the components, hoses and diaphragms, from the AIS system or is there something else also running off those components that I do see?

Thanks FreeBird and Papa Fred for the two posts I found to help to get to this point

Did the motor come from a Venture or did it come from a Royal Star.  Yamaha built standard Royal Star cruiser models from 1996 to 2000 or 2001.  The Ventures came out in 1999 and were built until 2013.  They use the same basic motor, but the Venture models and later model Tour Deluxe  made from 2005 to 2010 had more horse power, bigger carbs and special fake fins on the front cylinders, those special finned covers had two attach points for the front "dog bones" that support the motor.  Also the air boxes for the original Royal Stars are a lot different that the ones on the Venture or Tout Deluxe.

If you received a Royal Star cruiser motor instead of a Venture Touring motor there is likely to be small differences in some of the plumbing like for the AIS.

Good news is if you did receive a Royal Star cruiser motor, most of the parts from your original Venture motor should bolt right on, bad news is , it still lack in horsepower.

If you post photos of the motor it could help us  help you.

I am not 100% sure which variant it came out of. I am guessing it is just out of a royal star. If spending some time in the garage, I found that the heads just wont work from the new motor. The intake boots are both smaller and the wrong angles. The bolt pattern is different and I can not swap the boots. I decide to just swap the heads, so I will use the original cams and hopefully there will not be much of a power change. I pulled the entire AIS off and pluged the ports on the head. Not sure what those ports are made off but they are hard.

So I have the heads on and I have noticed that there is not enough slack in the timing chains to slip the chain over both cam sprockets. I am guessing I need to take one of the sprockets off a cam shaft. If there is any advice to be shared, I be happy to hear it.
