Picked up "Black Betty", a 2007 RSTD Midnight from the dealer yesterday. Since I have been lurking while looking for my bike, I had already decided to put the Road Star luggage rack on it instead of the flimsier looking (and more expensive) RSTD one. I have the rack but need some input from people that have done this. The rack's license plate mounting bracket seems to be about 1/8 of an inch (didn't measure) to long and when eyeballed with the seat bolt aligned extends past the license plate bracket. One post I read said it fit with "some manipulation". What sort of manipulation has anyone used to install this?

I had one on my 2006 Midnight RSTD, until I switched to a Harley Tour-Pak. It does tend to "almost but not quite fit". If I remember right (it's been 2 years) I just kinda manhandled it enough to get all of the bolts started straight, then tightened them down alternately until they were all seated. It works great too. I took one trip with it, I must of had 80 pounds on it with no problems at all. (Except of course the bike was top heavy and a hand full!!) :)

Was thinking of trying it that way. Just got back with some bolts, got some aluminum spacers just in case. If it doesn't want to manhandle, I figured I'd mount it on the outside of the license plate bracket with the spacers.

Thanks.
