muffler rotted at clamp. need help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. My bike has been having a deck backfire issue fir some time. It started and got worse on a280 mile ride. I tried everything and just 3 days ago the opposite side of the backfire started getting pretty loud and raspy. Today I find out the muffler is not attached to the pipe but just hanging there.

What are my options? I have a set of beat up road king pipes but bike is not in pristine condition so I'm ok installing them.

My question is. Is the pipe totally round at the point? (My goldwing wasnt... what a PIA)

Second question. There are 10mm bolts on bottom of pipe. What are they there for?

The 10 mm bolts that are in the header pipes ar efor ataching an exhaust gas analyzer.

Yes the pipes should be round, there is a pair of BUB slip ons for sale on the classified forum. They are in very good shape and have just been repacked.

Just FYI: the pipe goes into the muffler at the joint. The pipe is mild steel whereas the muffler is stainless. I would bet on the pipe being corroded all-around so it broke there, with the last ~2" of pipe still stuck in the muffler hole. Can't tell for sure without pics, but I think your mufflers are in a much better shape than the pipes.

Depending on what magic device the Road King mufflers have at the forward end, you may or may not be able to connect them to what's left of your pipes' ends.

Take a look (maybe even post a pic) before investing in new mufflers ;-)
