How does the turn signal cancel work?

I took the turn signal stuff out to get at my horn button and clean it. Now the turn signals are difficult to engage and to manually cancel. What sort of lubricant should be used in there and where exactly? How does the shape of those two rounded side contacts affect cancelling turn signals?
