Missing tranny locks/shims, or whatever they are, can account for excess end/side play (clearances) that create the loud sounds. The side play can cause the gears/parts to bang loudly together with each power pulse from the engine.

i am hoping so tuesday they come in , 10.00 for them.cogs look good going to put new ujoint in anyway cleaned everything only suspect is where middle shaft last two gears are when pushed together and turned with force they click right next to spring dont see no cracks or out of ordinary wear .for real .i think with out retainers an with all glue till i really torqued on it it was all in line , my real question is the book says SMOOTH operation cant i take a really small amount of metal off where clicking noise is ??? dude at shop said no parts after ten years. i really aint scared of it now i seen it . could it actually shift that much with blocks at each end of shaft from cases?????cases have no wear in dead spots where shaft ends ,,thank you for your opinion i have been doing cars an big trucks for 35 years , 63d in army . nevr seen knock didnt have something broke or wore it was the worse i have ever seen an still run on anything, litterally feel it on engine block,:fingers-crossed-emo tire jumped , all that

Look at the drive shaft and cup in the final.drive it sounds to me like the drive shaft might be skipping in the cup had that problem on a few I worked on and it sounded like the problem was in the middle gear.

What year is the bike?

Ok I pushed shaft into housing for driveshaft where spring is with it on the bike an tire mounted, and on the table by it self, see no or feel no grinning or slippage in driveshaft, its an 1989 1300; Venture royals, don't know if just saying venture is different, truly a massive, comfortable beautiful beast, an my only way of going, so if I put it all back together, I will break it down a second time, , I live in the woods an my driveway is almost a mile long around the an up a rocky road, ,I tell everybody if I make it to the pavedroad I am fine,,takes 2a people to pick it up

I am going to change joint anyway, doesn't look bad, no grease fitting an I can get a joint for a pto shaft that has a hidden or flat, depending on your terms, grease fittingfitting in the end of a cap, I don't like having peices with grease I can't grease , learned hard way on dirt road,,,
