First Mod - 2018 SVTC - Hide the Freewire

Recommended Posts

As you probably know, I bought a couple of Sena Freewires for myself and my son for my 2018 SVTC. In its normal deployment, I have the Freewire mounted to my handlebar via the included mount, the headset cable plugged into the rider port, and the 12v power cable slinked down the left side of the tank to the 12v port.

This project started as a way to get power to my son's Freewire in the back. I'm not a big fan of drilling holes unless I absolutely have to, but the obvious answer to a non-permanent solution was to get a 12v port installed somewhere towards the back of the bike. If you take the seat off, then remove the plastic panel below the passenger backrest pad on the trunk, you'll discover that there are already pathways for wires to enter the trunk behind the pad. Thus, no drilling! Not only could I run the power wires that way, but also the headset cable for the Freewire from the passenger headset port.

And that is exactly what I did. I got a 12v socket from Walmart, some extension wire, and a Female HM090-2 connector from Cycle Terminal (http://www.cycleterminal.com/hm-sealed-series-090.html), wired that up, ran it behind the felt on the back inner wall of the trunk, down through the existing holes and to the available Male HM090-2 (switch on and off with the bike) under the seat. I then ran the headset cable up from the socket into the trunk as well. I attached the 12v socket (which had a mounting plate) and the Freewire (which also had a mounting plate) to the back of the rear wall of the trunk behind the felt with my favorite tool: Industrial Strength Velcro.

BONUS: When I'm not riding with my son, I can turn off Dual Zone Audio and run my Freewire from the trunk. This leaves the handlebar area clean and free of clutter, and leaves the Freewire in the trunk where it is better protected from the elements and is locked away when I'm not with the bike.

Below are a picture of the install with the felt pulled down, and with the felt in place. You can still see the items with the felt in place, but that's ok. It was a balance between putting them down too far to be serviceable or cutting the felt to expose them, which I didn't want to do.
