  1. As far as I know there is no adjustment. It either works or it's bad. When you turn on the ignition can you hear it pump and then shut down??

I clicks until pressure is built up. Most of the time just a few clicks. If I have the fuel cut off and have run most of the gas out of the carbs, it will click fairly quickly then stop.

The bike does not leak gas when off or when the ignition is on and the fuel pumped primed. Only when the bike is running with the choke off. It seems that with the choke on it does not leak as much, I couldn't really test because the choke spring will not hold the choke open going down the road.

The bike did smoke horribly when driving it back from the mechanic, but I am guessing it was just too much gas?

  2. Ok , one other thing to look for. If the floats are hollow like the used to make them years ago, the floats themselves may be filling up with gas and falling open if the floats have a pin hole in them. This would have the same effect as float levels set way too high. Also this model may be like the 2gens that come from the factory with the float levels set too high. The manual is wrong on this. Goose has a write up in the Tech section on a better way to set the float levels without getting them too high.

The floats seem to be a solid black material. The bike is still at the mechanics so I will have to wait until I can get someone with a trailer to help pick it up. I have looked at the write up that Goose did, and it is really helpful but maybe beyond my skill level. If I was fresh into this I would probably jump in head first, but at this stage I am just exhausted playing doctor on this bike.

I like to ride and this is my only bike. Motorcycling is a stress relief for me, and I need my medicine :/

  3. When you took off the old filter, did you open the fuel filter to check for crud?

If a filter has a lot of crud then some may have gotten thru to the carb.

If the filter was real bad you may have a lot of crud in your tank.

I agree with what others ave said, Fuel flowing out the overflow can ONLY be float, Float needle, or float needle seat. There is a slim outside chance of a possibility of a cracked carb causing this as well, but that is very unlikely. All of the rest of the stuff in the carb can not make fuel come out the overflow.

I have seen gas boiling in a float bowl on a car once, but it was just driven 90 miles on the freeway, with NO coolant and the heads were glowing red hot.....:scared::225:

I did not split the filter, but the gas coming out was clear and there was only a slight discoloration to the clear filter body.

  4. Just some info about Gasoline Boiling Point

"The boiling point of gasoline varies. At atmospheric pressure, it's between 100 and 400 oF. A primary cause of this variance is the various additives in the gasoline from different refiners designed to meet different octane requirements."

If you haven't I would drain the tank and try some fresh gas in it. I personally have never heard of gas boiling in a tank or a carburetor. Thats not to say it doesn't happen, but it seems very unlikely to me that this would cause all your troubles. I'd still wager that it's in either the floats, needles or the seats. That is what controls how much gas gets into the bowls.....:2cents:

I have had gas boil in the summer in my gas tank in a previous bike, so I am familiar with that. It just doesn't make since in a carb because of the air mix that should bring down the temp.

I have no clue at this point, I threw my hands up after about the 20th time I took the carbs off and on again with the same results.

  5. I don't have any idea why the mechanic did what he did with the heat gun. He is the best BMW mechanic in our area and he works on various different bikes and has been in business for many years.

Question for you guys though, what if I adjusted the float bowels lower that factory? Would that possibly help?

    To address other questions:

    - Factory fuel pump

    - Recently replaced fuel filter after the problem started

    - Bike just turned 30k miles.

  6. Is there anyone that I could just send the carbs to? I want someone recommended from you guys that know what the hell he is doing. I have wasted all of spring on this issue and well over $600 in parts and labor that I will never see again.

I want to get this bike fixed and put a big for sale sign on it. It seems most here have had great dependability with your bikes. I have not been so lucky and this has left a very very bad taste in my mouth. I have never had so many issues with a product that I have ever owned! This thing is worse that a damn boat. The first $3000 and this is off to its new owner and I will never own anything with carbs again. EVER!

  7. I'm not familiar with the '98 carbs but the first thing I would question would be the needles and seats themselves. And I'm going to ask, did the same mechanic install them?

If the wrong needles were installed the problem is more than likely there. I've pulled carbs apart with needles that were too short and did not seat at all.

But with what you have told so far, the current mechanic needs to be kept away from the bike...... or any bike for that matter. Sounds clueless.

    Mike

They are brand new factory Yamaha seats with screens that came with matching needle valves. I purchased them from the local dealership and installed them myself. They were in factory sealed bags and I checked them against the old ones before install and they were identical. I did the install myself on all of the new parts after a thorough cleaning. The only thing not replaced at this point are the needle jets and the rubber piece that they seat in.

  8. I don't know what else to do. My 98 Royal Star keeps pissing gas out of the overflow tubes.

I cleaned it, put new jets, new needle valves/seats, and it still pissed gas. I finally got so frustrated that I took it to a local mechanic and he said the floats were way off, charged me $280 and I thought that I was good to go.

    NOPE!!!

I live three and a half miles from his shop. I don't own a trailer and my buddy that does was not available so I rigged a 1L jerry can up thinking that would catch enough gas for 3 1/2 miles.

    NOPE!!

I had to dump the can three times, so that is 1L of fresh out of the pump that day gas per mile!

The mechanic has had it for a week and he called me yesterday and said that they had the carb bank on the test bench and hit it with a heat gun and the gas was boiling at 104 degrees, making the floats drop, and pissing gas again. He does not have any solutions.:confused24:

I have no idea where to go from here other than just put the bike up for sale. I WILL loose my ass if I sell this bike not running.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!

  9. You will be using the needle valve only more than likely. You really don't want to get into replacing the seat itself unless you want to test your tolerance level. It's a bit of a job and you will need more parts.

However.... replacing the needle will be fine as I seriously doubt the seat would be worn or damaged enough to warrent the seat replacement.

Make sure the seat is clean an blow back though the seat out to the overflow vent to clear any obstruction in the net filter between the seat and the overflow vent. Yep there is a filter in the body also.

Make sure to inspect the float body carefully also. In some cases the float has failed and is soaking up fuel or the tang is damaged allowing the float to move without restrictions. This causes the fuel to overflow out the vent.

Once you get the floats set properly and fuel flowing correctly you should be in good shape.

    Mike

I don't guess there is anyone in my area that would like to supervise my work? All the PBR you can handle! LOL :sign67::beer:

  10. I went ahead and ordered a new needle valve kit from Boats.net and it should be here soon. I will yank the carbs off (again :() and open it up and just replace it on that carb. I hope that this will fix it for good because those things are expensive ($28 shipped for a small piece of brass?!) and I don't want to have to do the other three if it is not necessary.

Its hard to see, but it is the drain hose from the left bank of carbs (sitting on the bike to the left)

There was a good bit of oil in the back of the air box.

    http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll188/joshwilson18/photo4.jpg

Again hard to see, but there is gas sitting on top of the butterfly here, almost a half inch above it.

I pulled the plug from that cylinder and it was completely wet.

  12. I have a 98 Royal Star that I purchased basically in pieces. I have put it all together myself and had to re jet the carbs because I could not find a replacement exhaust for the 4 into 4 factory pieces and they were not able to be reused because the previous owner had tried to do some "custom" welding which made them useless.

Fast forward a year and I have not only purchased the Venture 4 into 2 exhaust but also all of the factory hangers and brackets and most recently, factory hard saddlebags.

I had issues with the bike pissing gas out of the right bank of carbs overflow tube, so I tore them down as far as I could and cleaned everything. I then took it to a mechanic that synced them for me ( I feel as if he overcharged a bit at $90 to do it) and the bike has been running really well.

After a long ride last weekend, I decided that the BUB's that came with the Venture exhaust was rather loud and I had some Harley Touring pipes laying around and I have seen a great deal of guys here using them, so my dumb ass slaps them on and I take a ride. On the way back I smell gas and look down to see gas POURING out of the drain tube all over the motor. I quickly get back to the house and wipe everything down and figure maybe the Harley pipes in some way were putting to much back pressure on the carbs and reinstall the BUB's. No such luck, now the bike is still pissing gas at an alarming rate and also smoking and has the smell of oil in the exhaust.

At this point I have invested so much time, energy, and MONEY I just want to take it to someone and have it fixed. Or maybe just cut my loses and sell the damn thing!

I really like the bike when it is running properly. I know that it doesn't have the power of the newer versions, but it seems to go down the road just fine.

I do not want to spend some ungodly amount to get this fixed however, as I could have purchased a great running newer bike at this point, so I am reluctant to drop loads of cash on this deal.

Yamaha dealer that is local says that they will start at $500 and go from there. The independent that did the sync will prob be the same.

Any ideas? Maybe just buy a newer 32mm and do a swap? Am I missing something that it could be?

I hate to say it, but my Road King was way more dependable. In the three years I owned it I never did anything but oil and tires for 33K (sold it with 56K) I was hoping that this bike would even be better, but it looks like that will never be the case. I only have 30k on the ODO right now on the Royal Star and the way its going I don't think it will make it to 50k!!

  13. I have a 98 Royal Star that I have almost completely turned

into a tour deluxe. The last thing on my list are saddle bags, as I have

all of the brackets and exhaust installed. The problem I am having

is finding factory bags without spending a fortune! Is there

somewhere besides eBay that I can source them?

Also, I use to have a road king classic and I really kind of

Liked those bags. Believe it or not, I can buy a pair of

those for half the Yamaha factory bags. Has anyone

done this, and if so is there a write up and pictures?
