  1. I'm now onto my 5th 1st gen Venture, and the best thing I ever did to 'em, was to cut the windshields in HALF!!

    P1020934.JPG

I too am 6'2", and this windshield height gave me a nice airflow across the top of my helmet. Not too hard...but just enough.

It also made it so I could see right over the top of the screen too! (have I mentioned that I hate fairings???)

My newest aquisition, an '85 VR, is gonna go under the axe pretty darn quick here too.

  2. Atlm...what didn't you like about the V-Strom?? waz it a DL650, or the DL1000??

I've heard that the 650 is one of the most comfortable, and fun bikes to ride solo that was ever built. I've really been considering one for myself. (gotta finish my latest hot-rod project first, before I aquire any new toys :starz: )

  3. The only member of our family that doesn't ride their own bike is my eldest daughter...but she wants to learn.(she's kinda busy raising 3 very young grandkids) Between my son, my middle daughter, & myself, we have 12 bikes in the garages, and in the driveway under cover.

My son (the youngest) at 19 just bought his 3rd bike. It's a R-6, and he's an awesome rider. He has a ton of long distance miles already, and now his middle sister recently bought her first bike...(I'm so proud! :sun: )

  4. Good one Jrichard!!! :thumbsup2:

but I'd like to add that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE that WORKS for the government should be on the list for random testing! My tax dollars are paying their wages. Shouldn't they too have to prove that they're not using dope???

  5. Oh, I've done this several times myself.

Now when I'm considering a turnaround, I'll stop...completely...then I'll look over my options before I do my turn. I've saved flesh & metal due to this method. (learned the hard way)

  6. I had a similar problem with my '92VR...3 days after taking a 2 week trip with the wife on board...(darn glad we were back home first)

the Negative battery connection had come lose.......that's all!!! Tightened it up, and not a problem since! So check those battery connections first!

  7. I rode my jockey shift '46 knucklehead all year round in Wisconsin for 3 years before I finally bought a car...and with bald tyres too! :snow:

(my wife sais that I'm good looking as hell...but I ain't the sharpest pencil in the box) :happy-emoticon:

  8. I just wanted to relate and experience I had today. After our Church's service my wife and I went to Applebee's for lunch. When it came time for the bill the waitress came over with a business card which said "this one's on us". She told us a gentleman at another table picked up oour tab. It was a family with several kids and a grandmother along, never saw these people in our lives. When we thanked him and asked why, he stated to ahve a merry Christmas. Maybe there is hope for this world after all!!

You weren't dressed like ME were ya??????? :innocent:

  9. I thought about doing this EXACT same thing to my '83's tourbox.

But then I bought my '92 VR, and 2 helmets fit into THAT box no problemo!

Did they shrink the size of the boxes on the 2nd gen's???? (just 1 more reason to stay away from those things!!!!!) :stickpoke: :innocent:

  10. WOW...that waz too close!

    I DISPISED that movie!!!

I've seen too many people that act and ride like those asses in that movie (dangersous jerks)

Their "hey...look at me, I'm riding a Harley...ain't I cool??" attitude makes me sick, and they take themselves way too seriously!!!. Not funny at all in my book...I couldn't possibly stomach another one. :smash2:

Sorry if I sound so serious, but I can't stand posers.

(I have a decal on my saddle bag..."It used to be about MOTORCYCLES...now it's a fashion show")

  11. I've run several different exhaust tips on my 83V, and the Bub's I stole from the H-D dumpster looked the best, sounded the best, but sucked the performance outta my engine. (no, I didn't re-jet) I was given a pair of new* Yamaha tips from a different bike, which were silent in comparison, but made a HUGE difference in how my engine ran and pulled.

  12. I would say you are right but, after being married to my one and only wife for 40 years, I learned you can be right or you can be happy. I choose to be happy.

I don't understand something here...are you still married to her??? I mean, did she always wanna be right, or did she make you happy???

  13. Today actually IS my birthday...(so it naturally figures that it would fall on a day where all the flags of the nation fly at half-mast!)...........I feel the love!!! :smilies6:

Seriously, my father joined the Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor...I couldn't be prouder of him. He was an wonderful person, and a good man.....I miss him.

Bless the Veterans!!!.......(and that IS a great patch!)

  14. The next time there pizza wasn't delivered so timely and it might have had the lid open and cooled off a bit

    :whistling:

Oh...so that was YOU!!!!?????? :buttkick: :starz: :stickpoke:

...and not that I'm into your love life, but I personally would be letting that one go her own way

    :2cents:

    I couldn't agree more.

  15. It's a truely awesome feeling riding next to your own son, Loehring.

My son bought and 'remodeled'(?) his first bike, a v-45 Magna, at 15 years old. Rode that for about a year, then at 17, bought a pair of V-65 Sabres. 1 runner, and 1 parts bike. Once again he 'remodeled' it to his taste (looked like it waz straight outta the Road Warrior movie).

At 17, he rode out with my wife and I to Bonneville Speed Week ('08).

He graduated this last spring, and just after he turned 19, bought himself a beautiful R-6 Yamaha...that he worked hard to earn for himself.

He's a wonderful young man, that has alot of personality, a great sence of humor, and has alotta self respect. Oh, and he's one hell of a good rider too!

Here he is, ready to hit the road on his Sabre...

  16. Lucky boy!

I've got as friend that has one, and I too thought they looked pretty wyld at first...but i like wierd stuff anyways. But when I sat on it, I fell in love with the balance of this sled.(he's nuts about it)

Another friend has a Victory Vegas that I did get to ride, and LOVED how well it performed...so put the ride and the balance of the Vision, together with the power and performance of the Vegas???...should be an awesome motorcycle...and I wanna ride one!

    Lucky boy! :cool10:

  17. I've seen a number of riders wearing these blaze orange, yellow, and green vests...which could do a good job. However...most of these people ride fully dressed bikes, and the ONLY part of them you can even see over the tourboxes & fairings is their helmets. And most bike accidents are getting hit from in front, or behind...right where you can't see these vests anyway.

So the only bike they'll really do any good on, is one without any fairing or luggage on it. JMO

  18. Do they provide anything with the cabin? Bedding, etc?

Inquiring minds want to know (and those of us who have to convince the rear speaker)

Sorry, no pics here either...but they do have heaters, beds, and often electrical outlets in them, so all you need to bring is your bedding and your laptop.

My wife & I now have a newer VR ('92), and a newer ('93) KwikKamp.

We used to pull our old Trav-Lite M/C camper behind our '83 V.

We seem to do the same as most on the board here, as we only get hotels in heavy rain, or on high mileage days. Otherwise, it's state campgrounds, or KOA's (which are very well equiped & usually very clean...but more $$$.) We've found some of our favorite campgrounds (privately owned), while searching out state ones. We also do the occcasional BLM land.

This past September, we did the Southern Utah & Colorado National Park tour (8 parks). Had a ball!!!

28* camping in Cortez, Co...(KOA just outside of Mesa Verde NP)...but inside the KwikKamp was warm and accomidating...(space heater & WiFi movies on the laptop!)

Our favorite camping spot on the whole trip...(once again by accident...looking for gas) was in Hite, Ut, which is in the Glen Canyon side of Lake Powell. BLM camping right on the edge of the lake! Georgeous camping & scenery, stars galore, very private...and within a short walk...flush potties!! (we highly recommend this place to anyone, and will be going back again!)

    Here's the old rig...

and I'll have to scan one of the new rig...

  19. I bought a '92 VR from a guy that had replaced it with the same BMW as in the first post.

But I too will be heading back to my Yamaha dealer for my FJR (hopefully this coming spring) when I get ready to replace my VR. These are damn impressive motorcycles IMO...and cost is a factor for me too. Pay less for a superior product???...count me in! (kinda curious that I have a H-D too, huh??)

  20. I've got several 1st gens, and I've cut the windshield down by nearly a whole foot! I HATE tall windshields...but that's just my own opinion. (I know there's another thread about this somewhere out there.)

The wind hits me right at the top of my head, which (to me) is perfect! I can see over it beautifully, and if the weather gets that bad, there's still enough there to hide behind...(but I never do).

This summer on our road trip through Southern Utah, we had 70mph sidewinds...which did suck, but they wouldda blown anybody on a bike around.

  21. So will a 1500 Wing also 'walk away' from a Venture?

    craigr

    Hahaha....funny you should ask this...

My riding partner rides a 1500 EXACTALLY like the one I used to have (in the pic). He was one of the big reasons I bought my Wing in the first place. He couldn't say enough, about how it rode, the power, the awesome engineering...

So when I first got my Venture, we went out for a ride. He was alone on his Wing, and I had my teenage son on the back of my V. There's a big long grade heading South outta town here on 101 called 'Radar Hill' (can you guess why??)

So my bud starts to act like he wants to race me UP this hill...and I absolutely WALKED away from him! (and I had a passenger on too!) He was quite bothered about it, and said "well, you down-shifted"........but NOPE...I didn't!

This 1st Gen has so much power. I can have my wife on the back, a weeks worth of traveling gear loaded up, with our camper hooked on back...and I can drop a gear or two and pass just about everything on the road. These engines are the most awesome engines I've ever had the pleasure of owning.:thumbsup2:

My only complaint about my 1st Gen V's, is that the front end rides hard when I'm alone on the bike...even after doing all the adjustments, and with progressive suspension springs. But, that's it!

  22. I've got this set of lightbars that came with my '83 that I'll never have any inclination to use.

Most of the lights work, but I think with alittle wiring work, that they'd all work....(I think)

There are 3 rails in all, (2 for lower bags, and 1 for top box)...and the chrome is in very good condition.

I'd like $150.00 ....that sound fair???
