So I have given up on the huge, ugly air box on my 98 RSTD! I have ordered pods. I will restrict the air flow for what's left of this season, which likely means increasing the fuel flow as well, but enough, is enough! I will rejet the carbs over winter to match the pods and get the carbs synced. Now the next step, relocate or bypass the ignition switch. I'm sick and tired of the bike quitting when the switch gets heated. I love this bike, but Yamaha really screwed the pooch on some of the designs on this generation. I have already relocated the fuel filter. Good thing I'm retired and have the time to do this shite! I'll let yall know how the pod things goes.

Does anyone know the size of the carb air intake on a 98 RSTD? I'm getting two different results when I search. 28 MM and 32 MM. I have had enough with the big ugly air box on this scoot! I'm changing to pods.

I love my 98 RSTD...I hate this bike! Can someone please, please tell me how the f#$k I get the big ugly air box cover back on after changing the air filter? I'm seriously considering scrapping this thing for a freaking mule! Maybe just chopping up into a million chunks of scrap iron!

What does that entail?

I love my 98 RSTD, but the issues continue. The bike idles great with the choke in, when warmed up it idles great...until it gets heated up. Once I've ridden for about half an hour or so, when I gear down the idle goes wild, revving very high. I have turned down the idle screw but to no avail. While riding it sounds great. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

So my 98 RSTD is running great...but...it has a tendency to quit or become very difficult to start once the engine and rad are heated. I have heard from another member with this era of RSTD the location of the ignition can be a problem due to excessive heat from the motor and rad. So my question is can the ignition be relocated and if so, is there anyplace on the forum or elsewhere to get the info. I've looked but so far nada, bupkus, squat, diddly, zero. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your input, you are one of very few who eve take the time to respond. Having said that, this far from the first time I have not received any response regardless of a single or double post. It's at time like this I question the value of paying for this site. One would think others have had similar issues to many issues I have posted about. I can't have the only older RSTD. On the bright side, I'm learning more and more about my bike and how to take of many of the issues. Again, thanks for your input.

An update. Since no one responded I took the headlight apart and yes, there is an inline fuse in the housing for the light bar. In my case the fuse is fine and I did get the lights working but as soon as I put the headlight back together they quit again. I suspect a break in the wire so will pickup a new fuse holder and once I get it working, will relocate the fuse to and easier spot to get at it.

Okay, still trying to decide no, discover why my light bar ain't working. Saw a post on another site that says there may be an inline fuse housed in the head light bucket. Anyone know for sure? Thanks

Does anyone know if the ignition contacts on a 98 RSTD can be cleaned without having to break into the ignition case? Thanks in advance.
-
Ok. Where is the vent? I tried googling and if it's what I think I saw, does mean taking the gas cap apart.

Okay, so here I am again with yet another issue on my 98 RSTD. It's running great, but every once in a while it just quits, usually at higher speeds. Sometimes I can kick down a gear and it basically "jump" starts, other times it just quits and I have to pull off the road and try to restart, which it will do...eventually! So has anyone else had this issue? I'm thinking faulty kick stand sensor or even faulty ignition. Thoughts and thanks.
