  1. Good Morning,

So, I found that the clamps were not tight enough when clamped to the engine guards; So I drilled a single hole through both the clamp and the engine guard and tapped the hole at 1/4" x 20 and then threaded and tightened the round head screw to prevent any twisting. No, I did not have any need to cut the plastic.

    This is perfect! Thank you!

Sorry I did not respond sooner, but have been out of state and offline for a few days.

Thanks again for the details! Soon as I get back I'll start to work on the install.

  2. I understand your frustrations on the .17. Not my cup of tea but have friends that love them. .22 mag. works very well for me and since I am retired I have to live with what I have. Back to my hunting...was raised and hunted Nebraska until 36 years old. Nebraska is range country and a shot at a white tail is either 200-300 yds (using a .30/06 accelerator, or if in what little tree stand area you hunt then my .45-70 worked well. Now I live in North Carolina which is covered in trees, therefore the 7.62x39 is great with 100 yd. shots a far shot. The .45-70 would work great but at my age the recoil and blast is more than I can take.

Love your posts. Stay warm and keep healthy.

I love the .17HMR. Very fast, level round. Great for squirrel hunting. I'm trying to set one up with a silencer and IR scope for night varmint hunting, but don't think the can will suppress it that well. This one has too much scope for the IR device -- still tweaking it.17 HMR.jpg

  3. Hey, thanks for the nice comments.

It's a nostalgia piece for me. I qualified expert at the Cape May Coast Guard Recruit Center with one just like it, as well as spent a lot of time on the parade field with it. Luckily never had to fire one at anyone.

Got this through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (http://thecmp.org/). Was actually very easy (and I live in Massachusetts), especially if you are current or ex-military. It's the lowest operable grade -- Field Grade 1, I think. $650 delivered to my door, along with a nice case. The key is you have to be "associated" with an organization that has a relationship with the CMP. Most are ranges and gun clubs, but the simplest I found is the Garand Collectors Association (https://thegca.org/). They are nationwide and you can get a one year membership online for $25. Worked for me.

Now, having said all that, I have not fired this beast yet. Looks to me like all the parts are there, and in good working order. No nicks on the muzzle, the barrel looks to be in good shape and the bolt appears to work fine. I'm taking it to my son's place in Virginia in a few weeks and hope to test fire it there. The stock looked to have old cosmoline on it; not real bad, but was a dark, slightly tacky finish. I'm in the process of refinishing it now.

  4. I, too, have been disappointed in the GPS. I love the size and information it presents, but the limitation of accepting only 5 way points is very disappointing for the type of back road touring I like to do. I'm hoping future updates will correct this.

I solved the wireless headset link with the Sierra SMH10 interface for the Harley Davidson (https://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SIE-SNA-HD-SMH10). I had the Gold Wing version previously, and this works just the same on the new Venture.

  5. I am happy to report that I received the SENA SMH10 BT interface for the Harley Davidson (https://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail...E-SNA-HD-SMH10) from Sierra last week, and it works like a champ on the new Venture TC, just like my previous one worked on the Gold Wing.

When I first examined it, I called Sierra telling them they had sent the wrong one as it was only a 5-pin DIN connector. I was told the other two pins were not active on the Venture (same on the HD) and the 5-pin would work. Sure enough, it does. I can activate the voice commands with a single touch of the PTT switch, and the CB transmit by holding the PTT down.

  6. I'm a guy what likes a bluetooth headset for my helmet. Last season I bought a pair of Sena 30Ks for me and my son. I didn't know then that the Venture only had wired headset support, but I did know this before I bought the bike. I had a couple of J&M headsets in the queue to purchase.

During our club kickoff party this year, one of my club buds told me he got a Sena Freewire for his Harley (newer model, 2017 I think). I didn't think much of that until I started doing the research on the J&M headsets. I noticed something peculiar: The part number for the connection cable for the newer Harleys is HC-ZYH, while the part number for the Venture is YHC-ZYH. Both are seven pin.

That got me to thinking... Could they be the same cable? Was the "Y" at the beginning of the Venture cable just there to denote that it's only sold through Yamaha?

So I did the only thing a geek like me could do: I called my friend and asked him to meet me to test his Freewire on my bike.

    Bottom line: IT WORKS.

If you're interested, you need the Sena Freewire for Harley-Davidson, part # FREEWIRE-01.

Very cool! I am of the same ilk, as in "I'm a guy what likes a bluetooth headset for my helmet". I had a SENA SMH10 interface harness for my 2012 Gold Wing and would like to set up the same connection for my new Venture. According to a Sierra tech rep I talked to this morning, I should be able to use the Harley version of the Harness:

    https://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SIE-SNA-HD-SMH10

Anyone had any experience with this? I tried to contact Steve Schmidt, the original designer of the SENA-Gold Wing harness, but with no luck.

  7. I wish that I could...that was months ago...while I was Googling around...

What the jist was though, (and why I decided to pay more for them through Yamaha...), that he had a Harley cord (owned a Harley) and traded it in on a SVTC. He then tried his cord, and either the mic wouldn't work, or also something to do with the Intercom feed. I read that, and said, forget it...will pay the extra juice that Yamaha wants, and KNOW that it will work, 100 percent with the system. So...I ordered two (we have the 801's) cords, and the extension cord for the missus. Mimurph, yes was more bucks from Yamaha...but then...if you do go that way, and not directly through J&M, to buy their 8 pin Harley cord lower....you will at least know from the get-go...that you plug in...everything works, and no chance of a voltage cross-over spike to flow back to the system. If you cross pin for instance, this can happen. You create a voltage back-feed loop. I played it totally safe.

I will search around again, and if I stumble upon the post...will certainly come back here, and paste it.

For what it's worth, I was online with J&M this morning. I purchased an HD lower cord (part HC-ZYH). It didn't work with the headset I have, but then I realized I did not have an "Elite Series" headset. I noticed there are a number of "Elite Series" headsets so wanted to determine which I could use. The online tech confirmed that only "Elite 801" series headsets will work with the new Venture. I asked him about a number of Elite 801 headset part numbers, basically for different helmet configurations, and he said they would all work, and that I had the correct lower cord. BTW when the lower cord came it indicated it was also applicable to the 2018 Venture. Having said that, I do not have the correct headset yet so have not confirmed any of this on the new bike.

  8. It's only for the j&m 801 series headsets. That's what yamaha is selling. I've also been told that the harley cable for the 801 speakers it the same as yamaha

Yes, I did go back and the HD PIN-outs seems to match.

I'm trying to modify the Sena GW interface harness for the Venture. I'm very close. thanks for this information.

  9. Greetings -- new member here....

We're planning a trip to ride some of the great roads in West Virginia in May. We hope to pick a spot to stay for 3 to 5 nights during the week, and to day rides out of there. Would be 5 to 6 guys plus bikes. A house or cabin that could accommodate us all would be great. We are all "mature" riders, so no real roughing it.

Any suggestions from any of you locals would be greatly appreciated...

    Buck

  10. In response to YamahaParExcellence's post, my previous ride was a 2012 Gold Wing. I really wanted something a little lower, and with an easier clutch, and more of a cruiser style. I was really surprised at just how easily it handles; feels like a very low center of gravity, especially given the weight. Course having my feet flat on the ground helps as well. The clutch is somewhat easier than the Wing - not as much as I had hoped, but less just the same. Helps with the arthritis in my left hand. I'm no audiophile, but the sound system sounds great. I used to play music on the mounted speakers on the Wing, and these are at least as good. As noted elsewhere on this site, I'm somewhat underwhelmed with the GPS right now. I used BaseCamp to plan detailed routes then uploaded them to the Wing. So far I have not figured out how to get more than about 5 way-points uploaded into the Venture. I am planning a week-long trip to the West Virginia area next month and hope to wring it out pretty good there.

  11. I would start with something already out there. http://www.hitechwireless.com/template/images/sena/SM10/faq_cable_diagram_SC-A0120.jpg I dont see them reinventing the wheel on something like this.

Yes, that's exactly what I thought, and looked for other 7-pin DIN helmet connectors. I found one for HD and one for the Polaris Spyder, but neither are exactly like this one. I see this is for SEna SMH10 connection? From what type bike? I'll try and follow the link back to see the source.

I will double-check, but I'm pretty sure I have already confirmed that the 3 pin on this diagram is for the stereo speaker common/ground, and pis two and 5 are for the left and right speakers, although I'm sure which is which.

Thank you very much for the reply.

  12. Did the test ride last September with the wife unit, and put the deposit down then and there. Picked it up on one of the few warm days in February up here. Have been out only once since then, but love it. Was looking for something a little lower and with an easier clutch than the Gold Wing, but with all the comfort and touring features. So far this seems to fit the bill to a tee!

  13. Anyone figure out the 7-pin DIN helmet connector pin outs for the new Venture TC yet? I've figured out the three for the speakers, but not the microphone. One appears to have 7.5 volts on it, so I'm wondering if that's the push-to-talk? I actually have the maintenance manual with all the wiring diagrams, connector details and wire colors, but am unable to trace them back to the source to determine what's on each pin. I've got headsets from other bikes I'd like to rewire to use, plus I'm trying to rig up a Bluetooth interface, and would like to avoid paying J&M $200 for a headset just to figure out the pin outs.

  14. You are correct... Harmon is the manufacturer. I have not checked the GPS sites like you suggested, but I will. I have found out some info on route shaping in Basecamp. Problem is I have real old maps on my Garmin and they want an arm and a leg for new maps.. Then I'm not 100 % sure that they will work.. That's what happens when you get in on the ground floor.. You become a beta tester. 😁

I switched from a Garmin GPS to a Gold Wing with built in GPS. I traded my Garmin to a friend for some other electronics, then realized I could no longer get map updates for Basecamp. My solution was to buy a cheap $40 Garmin GPS off eBay with lifetime maps. I use that in my truck and to keep my Basecamp maps up to date.
