  1. Our oldest daughter, who as a child I nicknamed "T.C." (stands for Top Child BUT she always shared some similarities with "Top Cat the original T.C." too for any of who remember that cartoon) and then later in life, she earned the biker name of Awahoo, ALWAYS loved our Michigan fall colors. Her life path long ago led her to the west coast and on to marriage and mother hood BUT her love for these fall colors in Michigan remains. Tip and I were talking about her, and of course missing her smiling face greatly, when I suggested that we put Trooper into his Mini Motor Home mode and do a color tour of Michigan's finest in her honor.. Tip agreed.. This video series is dedicated to T.C. but feel free to join the three of us as we head North toward Michigan's Mighty Mackinaw Bridge in search of colors like only Michigan, our home State, can produce!!

Hey Cowpuc, enjoying the video but you didn’t come far enough North and West to see some real fall Michigan colors

  2. The fact that the OP of this thread has NOT returned to update or offer any info to gain some insight has me thinking “fake serial blogger”. EVERYONE so far has not had an issue openly giving their bike S/N so we can validate a possible range that may be involved. So WHERE is this slighted rider? Why has he not re-engaged? Makes one wonder does it not?

If these bikes were having all kinds of these problems, would there not be a number of people venting their frustration? YOU BETCHA!! Do a search for ANYTHING related to this topic and there is NOTHING. NADA! ZIP! ZILCH!

for those of you who are GENUINE SVTC owners and have given S/N, thank you!

Had mine out for a spirited run yesterday and a close listen in the garage with a rod to my ear while idling after. Most of the noise I’m hearing seems to be coming lower in the engine (cam chain adjuster/primary chain adjuster?) but really isn’t as loud as the Harley’s that I’ve owned. I’m at 12k now so plan on rolling on to the 16k mile service where the lifters are scheduled to be inspected.

  3. So, I will keep this as short as possible, but i do know how you feel with a broken bike.I too have a new 18 svtc.My motor started sounding terrible at 3200 miles,as I was touring about 5oo miles from home.Sounding only bad at idle ha ha I decided to keep going on with my vacation into Canada.IM from New Jersey.Anyway,Motor went bang And shut down.I knew it was something internal.Got towed to a dealer in Quebec,Got arental car, went to Mont TRemblant ,my original destination and Called my dealer in Jersey.Who would have brought me his Demo SVTC but couldnt find a driver with a passport. After my time at MOnt Tremblant, took rental car to airport and flew home.Canadian dealer said he couldnt even look at bike for 2 weeks,so he stored it at no cost, until my dealer went to get it.My cam wore a hole into the lifter.Rear cylinder exhaust lifter.Dealer had my cam, lifter and all other associated parts in 3 days, and completed a day later. So my dealer is putting in a claim to get reimburse for my expeses, for car and airplane flight.Wich is around $1600.The bad thing is that was my big tour trip of the year and didnt go to alot of places i would have gone on the bike. The Nissan centra rental car really didnt get my blood pumping like the bike.So I hope that is the end of this type of problems.I wish you luck in getting your bike repaired in a timely fashion.I dont know of anyone else with this problem, but hope there isnt many more.

Thanks for posting, sucks to get your trip cut short but it sounds like your dealer is doing everything possible they can do. Is the last four of your SN under 1000 or so? I’m liking this 5 year warranty more and more.

  4. Do you mind if I ask what you last 4 digits are in your serial number?? We’re trying to ascertain if there’s a a true pattern here or not.

    thanks.

Chief, I agree with the reasoning. Is it a procedural oversight or an assembly oversight on these 500 bikes. Mine is 0705 which I believe is close to your date of assembly. I will be listening to my bike closely tomorrow especially the rear cylinder. I have thought I was hearing more valve noise but haven’t given it lot of thought ‘till now. If it was a procedural oversight, a recall might be in order on these 500 bikes.

  5. This is the BEST? REALLY!

I would ask the dealer if they had an old reliable first gen out back you could use until they get yours fixed! This is the riding season and you are grounded. Surely they have free of charge loaners for such situations.

Go to the top. Yamaha can't afford bad publicity at this point. Was there a problem with the oil change?

Sure sounds like a problem with the oil change. Very easy to put too much oil in if the level isn’t checked upright and to temperature. Definitely go to the top, waiting until Oct. is unreasonable.

  6. Thanks for the positive replies guys and I am sorry to see some arguments going on here. Didn't mean to provoke anything with my post. Gonna try to see if I can test ride the 3rd gen soon and also see how much they will give me for the 3 bikes.

I do love both my RSV and RS and the only reason I am considering trading them in is because of the 2013 HD Ultra Classic. The fact that now that I have it and can't sell it, is the factor that is driving my thoughts about trading all 3 bikes in towards the 3rd gen. It's not that I am dying to get the 3rd gen but I figure that the only way I am going to get rid of the HD is to trade it in. And hopefully trading in all 3 bikes will get me close enough financially to justify buying the 3rd gen. I would much rather keep riding the other 2 Yamahas for a few years, then purchase a used 3rd gen.

If I could sell the HD, this topic would be off the table and I would stick to my RS and RSV. Only reason I bought the HD was because of the price I got it for from a friend of the family whose husband recently passed away and this bike was his baby and it shows it. Was thinking that the newer Ultra's would be easier to handle than the 2nd gen. In my opinion, it's not even close. It has heat issues. With this bike, it's on the right side. Cooks my thigh and my wife's right foot, so the 3rd gen left side heat can't be any worse.

Had a 2012 Ultra 103 before my SVTC and the heat issue is not even comparable. If you like an air cooled V twin and like touring, the SVTC is the bike in my opinion. 12k and counting.

  7. Yes that is the scary part after uploading the pdf instructions. Just wish Yamaha extended the rack wider. Just so unsure on that look. I might bite the bullet and do the large one.

It looks better with the $99 bag and was very sturdy and offered attachment points on my trip. I kept my rainsuit and sandals in it for easy access without putting too much weight on the lid. But I wish it was wider also (and Chrome!)

  8. Thanks Yoopermoose. I just ordered the heat shields. Love the larger trunk rack they are offering for the venture too. Very cool looking. I believe much better looking than the Yamaha rack.

I agree and almost purchased it but look at the installation instructions first. Must make template and drill holes in what looks like areas that are not reinforced.

  9. Sounds like a warranty deal if steering bearings are loose @ 10k. But sounds like the trip went well.

Went excellent. Only 3 days of rain in 5 weeks. (Some rerouting based on forecasts) Dealer looking at steering bearing along with 12 k service and new front tire on Thurs. , we’ll see.

  10. Back home after 9414 mile trip. Steering head bearing started clunking 1000 miles from home and front tire being replaced on Thurs at about 10800 total milage. Overall bike performed well and was not babied. Yamaha dealer network very disappointing except for a few bright spots. Never saw another SV or Eluder on entire trip. 11. And you didn't think of reaching out through the forum? Hmm

It would have been a pleasure to render assistance. Anyways if you need help while pushing through CowTown PM me

Stay out of downtown it's our Stampede time

Sheesh if I only knew. Went to G&W cycles today to get the tire done. Trudy and Dave treated me first class! Blackfoot told me 10 days to get a tire and Pro-Am wouldn’t return any calls. Stampede looks nuts, like NASCAR with hooves. Going bob sledding at Winsport tomorrow 10:30 then heading to Medicine Hat after.

  12. Good to see it was just rain up there, can turn to snow anytime in the summer. Hiway 93 from Lake Louise to Jasper is a favorite ride of mine, Usually go in June or Sept to avoid the motorhomes.

Was 42 F when we went through, was thinking ice though. Banff was nuts with people, Jasper tolerable. Most beautiful ride ever and from there on 11 to Abraham Lake was also awesome. Would like to come back in winter.

  13. Hi to all. This is my first posting on this site. What I wanted to talk about was the lower air deflectors on the 2018 venture. I have the TC model and I did notice a big difference in the air temperature on the leg area compared to the v4 liquid cooled 1999 and 2007 model venture I owned prior to my third gen venture. Since I now live in Florida heat is an issue. I ordered the lower air deflectors kit and installed them. I took the bike on a 225 mile ride several days ago and I must say the lowers help distribute the engine air away and out from the seat area. Keep in mind while stopped is a different story but once in motion a major difference in air flow. I would recommend this purchase. Installation is easy but time consuming. All panels are clearly marked for drill points once the crowl panels are removed. I did recommend that Yamaha make this a standard for future bikes in my purchase survey to Yamaha.

They are essential IMHO, not only do they work for the heat, they also help keep the heat in on cold days. Big Bike Parts just came out with heat shields for the tank to seat transition which should also help with the rear cylinder heat at a stop.

  14. With that kind of money, and the low mileage, I'm wondering if going to the dark side on the rear might be an option. Those that have, on their 2ndGens have reported great mileage. In the 20K-25K range. Might be something to look into?? We used to have a fairly active 'dark side' group here on the board. I bet they'd know... I also bet the cost would be 20% of what the stealers are trying to pull out of the OEM/MC. :mo money: I've never considered going that direction 'cause I just don't put that many miles on the odo, but for someone who does a car tire might be the answer... :confused07::confused07::confused07:

I talked to some Wingers on the road and one guy was running a car tire on the rear and a rear tire on the front. Said he regularly gets 30k on his rear but said one time when he was aggressively hitting the twisties the cords separated (someone asked what the shiney specks on his tire was). So don’t know if that’s the answer either.

  15. Yep,, knowing how hard my Nephews Strat was on the rear tire and seeing the size on the new one, I could not help but ask about the cost of a replacement when we rode em last year at Sturgis.. The rep looked one up,, sure enough,, 575 bucks ( you could actually by the wheel itself cheaper than the tire).. Then Honda configured the new Wing with the same size tire and offered 2 options for tire selections (followed the unveiling there very closely too) and the prices came down considerably.. I think the last time I looked you could grab one for under 3 bills = just a little more than a new E-4 for an older Venture... @Yoopermoose , does this sound about right for what you ended up paying for a replacement?

I have had some issues getting service on this bike. Arranged for the 4K service w oil change in Reno 3 weeks prior to the trip and on my ride into Reno got a text from the dealer stating they didn’t have the oil (15w50 Yamalube synthetic). service manager blamed parts manager for F up. Yamaha will be hearing about that dealership. Then when I realized I was going to need a tire on the road I started calling dealerships in Calgary figuring that’s where it needed to be changed. 1st dealer stated they couldn’t get a tire for 10 days, second dealer didn’t return any calls or texts. So I figured it might be a Canada supply issue and ordered one from a dealer in Williston ND. $359 plus installation. However now it has become obvious that the tire will not make it that far so I stopped at a dealer in Rocky Mountain House AB who told me he could get a tire overnight (WTF?) but he was closed on Monday and we have bob sledding scheduled in Calgary on Tues AM. He did call another shop and arranged for them to get the tire ordered and scheduled for installation on Monday. Yamaha will hear about that in a positive way. So I don’t know how much this’ll cost yet, I’m probably gonna be stuck with the tire ordered in Williston also. My riding partner had problems with his Harley on July 3rd, we pulled into the dealership at 5pm and they kept the shop open and repaired his bike on the spot. 8800 miles on a touring bike sucks but I think the heat in Arizona and Nevada ate a lot of tread. My take on this is I love the bike but if Yamaha can’t get a better support network for “transcontinental touring” I will be going back to Harley.

  16. In Rocky Mountain House AB. Trip milage so far is 7600 miles. Rear tire is toast, replacing in Calgary on Monday at 8800 for the tire. No issues on SVTC except for tire. I have not seen one other SVTC or Eluder on the entire trip. Lots of interest from other riders though. Gas milage is averaging 40 now. (Going slower in Canada) Pic is from Columbia Ice Field between Banff and Jasper.IMG_3414.jpgIMG_2446.jpg

  17. Victory Vision horn in place on the '18 SVTC.

I did trim the square corner of the horn, so no clearance issues at all.

  18. Has anybody adjusted their handlebars yet? Thinking about changing the angle of my bars to alleviate some of the numbness in my right hand, and wanted to see if anyone else has done this yet.

I adjusted mine to as low as they will go without hitting the tank on full turn. Leaves my wrists horizontal with good blood flow. When they are that low some of the controls are a little hard to read. I used masking tape and a pencil to mark the original position and kept sample lowering until I had zero numbness. Loosen 3 and use the last for control, with the blanket in case.

  19. WOW!! That bike is loaded. With all the space in those saddles and trunk plus what's tied to the top and the trailer rack, it's amazing that the rear's only half gone..... :thumbsup2: I'd almost be tempted to go to the dark side......

Had to bring the electric guitar and amp! Without the camping gear would be much more manageable but the bike is handling the 175 extra pounds fine.
