  1. No 83-85 are the mk1 and the baddest bikes ever made....

All I recall was that in 1984 my buddy toured west on one. He came SCREAMING down the road as he left town, shooting straight past me, front wheel off the ground, the bags and trunk fully loaded.

THAT'S BAD ASS, and cool looking.

The next year my brother bought the 1985 Vmax.

And my history was written. I now have a 2006 Max and a 2013 RSV. Love both for what they are and what they're not.

  2. Here's a rough sketch of something I thought of almost immediately upon reading the type beside your graphic.

I prefer my bottom sketch more for a couple of reasons. 1) The Graphic N capital to the type visually lines up better with the top of the text to the right and the left leg of the N lines up better with the tag line that runs with the logotype. Both these reasons allow it to visually flow from left to right as it is read. The graphical staircase in the lower would need to be adjusted though to flow as a capital N would though from upper left to lower right. Not a problem.

Now, either will need to be massaged a bit more, and a graphical chair would need to be worked into it.

    Just my thought.

  3. Ok, so when I bought my 2006 VMX12, I almost immediately performed the "crimp" fix to improve the charging system.

Over the weekend, I found myself diving further into electrical "fixes" to repair weak charging voltage. I began by clipping the 3 wire connector from the stator and solid twisted and solder it. I also addressed the red and black from the regulator by either clip and solid solder the wires or extracting connector points and soldering/tightening the male and female connectors. It's done, and I'm now once again turning upwards of ~14.1-14.2 Volts at above idle RPMs.

Now as a new owner of a 2013 RSV, I'm wondering IF this Yamaha has any of these sorts of shortcomings that will need to be addressed as the bike ages? My guess there is. Can anyone give me insight what to expect?

    Thanks

  4. Marketing, another poster is correct. Yamaha is hedging it's $$$ on taking licks at the lower priced end of the V-twin touring market. Victory was a direct run at the HD machine. The Victory line didn't quite get the program for Polaris. Polaris is hoping the Indian name might have a better chance. IMHO I'm not so certain. SO it's up to Kawi and Yamaha to duke it out on the budget side of touring. I bet Yami is betting that the aging Kawi V-Twin tourier will not fare so well up against this new Venture.

    Time will tell.

I'm SUPER happy with my geezer bike, the 2nd Gen Venture. It'll do the job and let ME do the jobs on it that need to be done.

  5. Unless there is REAL good reason to jump like placing the VMAX 1700 V4 in it, I'll still take the old school tech of the RSV or Gen 1 over this unit. Too many goodies like Fuel Injection, ABS, Traction Control yadda yadda doesn't do it for this veteran.

Remember the potential headaches that go with maintaining those systems.

Lastly, there is something to be said for a Nascar V4 rumble over the all too common pop of a v-twin.

  6. I've installed the Barnett clutch with heavy duty springs on my 06 Vmax and used the OEM steels and frictions. It works very well.

I have a Barnett on order for my 13 RSV and will do the same.

If you choose the Barnett, be ready for a nice stiff lever pull like your OEM Harleys. Many times, Harley owners have a double take, rather, a double pull, when they try the lever for themselves. lol

The power band for the V4 can be found at a bit higher RPM than typical Twins.

  7. The unit on the left looks like a double up of an XJ bucket depress tool I have for my '84 XJ750RL. The J tool on the right looks like the unit I use on my 2006 Vmax.

I don't believe that either of the tools is appropriate for adjustment on any new Gen 2 Vmax from Yamaha since shims are under the buckets on those.

  8. PO installed the Star short wide windscreen, giving me the stock in a box. I'm 6'3" and the short wide I feel is perfect for me. Wind slightly clips the top of my helmet. I like looking over windscreens no matter what. I believe it's safer that way, clear unobstructed view of the road ahead and to the sides at all times and weather.

  9. Already have spare coolant "freeze plugs" in my spare parts drawer, but those are the lower plugs on the cylinder jugs, my photo shows a line of rust coming from a weep hole in the heads. I just wanted to verify it was only a weep hole and not connected to any functional part of the engine.

If I'm correct that's the weep hole I use on my Max for clearing the spark plug recess of debris before changing the plugs.

Maybe a rodent has been using the spark plug recess as a urinal?

  10. I've a Gorilla pager alarm, so I know what to expect from this model. Has anyone installed a Scorpio pager unit for their RSV? Was there a wire harness from the manufacturer or was it crimp solder and tape time? Where did you mount it?

  11. Yamaha chose to make the wires a permanent install to the coils on my 1984 XJ750RL as well. This is not a new choice and procedure for them. I don't understand why they couldn't make the coils/wires/caps the same install as on the VMX12 line? Totall serviceable.

With my XJ back in approximately 1986 or so, I found and purchased NGK caps only and installed them on the original wire ends easily. I can't recall if they had resisters in the caps, or not. I may have removed them though. The resistors are to suppress cross channel noise with regards to CB radios etc. I've been told. The cap I found are two right angle shorter read for the outer cylinders and two longer reach/deeper much like the Venture and VMax units. They've worked great for the 30 some odd years I've used them.

ill post a picture when I get outta bed.
