  1. Then,,, so, how many felt it was necessary to add the Power Commander to increase the rev limit? Which seems would double the cost of the mod.

    Mike G.

I started with the basic mods first, that way you can kinda work up to how far you want to go. K&N filters, AIS blocked, carbs richened up and sync'd, less restrictive exhaust, Dyna 3000 ignition reprogrammed to 7500 rpm. I am now looking at the gear swap right now in fact my bike is apart and I plan on shipping my differential out Monday for the swap.

I am a little concerned about the additional RPM's at highway speeds because I ride fairly fast. But when I consider the top gear ratio being overdrive it may not be a problem. see attached comparisons with other bikes in class.

Talking to John Furbur he said the gear increase is moddest. Like going from a 3:33 to a 3:73 gear. As a percentage that is only 11%.

  2. Do not jump to any conclusions when comparing your new tire to that POS you had. ANYTHING will handle much better than that Brickstone turd. Even when compared with other brands in the same size, the Brickstone has a TOTALLY different profile which causes its bad handling. Do some additional research on older threads, and in particular see my sticky thread in the tech section for a LOT more info on this subject.

I did read that post, thanks for putting that out there. I think the whole thing comes down to individual preference and riding style. If the new tire really feels good to me why should I consider something else? We won't know for a few weeks as I have to wait on the V-Max unit. Haven't even pulled the differential off yet...........

  3. Yes, it will be interesting to see how the skinny Dunlop feels versus the fat Bridgestone. The fat Dunlop may have solved all my complaints but as I mentioned, i think it is a matter of perspective and the way you expect the bike to feel. If the overall ride improves will I take a chance on the stock size again? Unknown at this time.

Oh and this is all relative. As the new tire measure out at 5.25" versus the stock at 6". So narrow in this case is still bigger than some back tires.

  4. Too late now but I noticed you're in Houston. Next time try Global Motorsports ( http://www.globalcycles.com/ ). I've had them beat Dennis Kirks price and only charge me $35 to put them on. (maybe $45 now) Probably order another set of Avons before my May ride.

    :usa:

Will check them out going forward even though they look like a pain to get to. I am out 290.

    Thanks.

  5. OK Team, everyone lighten up. I will not be doing anything that is dangerous or foolish that is why the questions on this forum. I have many years of experience racing and building bikes, cars and trucks. I can fabricate as needed and rebuild from the ground up so I am not the average touring rider. Thanks for the concern and I'll look at the other forums to see what is out there. Sometimes I just have a better idea.....:lightbulb:and sometimes I don't......:225:

  6. With the dry weights as listed being so close between the RSTD and RSV it is a little difficult to understand how there can be much difference with the front end weight and handling.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback but the deal is done. The smaller tire is mounted on the bike. Keep in mind also that this bike is a beast anyway and I prefer (have lots of ride time) on bikes in the 600 lb range so what you may consider twitchy may feel more normal to me.

  7. I went to Michelien Commander 2 and they only come in the 130 front size. I went ahead and tried it as I can use the low speed help. I have put over 12k on it at highways speeds and super alb speeds for hours and never really noticed any difference from this tire and the E-3 in the 150.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have the tires mounted, waiting on the V-Max gear-set to put everything back together. I'll post up with impressions after I get to put a few miles on the new tires.

  8. I am no authority on this by any means, but I can tell you that the original Tour Deluxe that were made using the original standard Royal Star motor and frame (96 to 01)did not have those extra struts, but that motor also put out about 20 horsepower less than the Venture and newer Tour Deluxe mootors.

A few folks have swapped out the newer Venture style motor into the older (96 to 01) model Royal Stars, most notably Tank from the Delphi Venture forum, you want to ask him what he did with the motor mounts, because I am sure he did not use the upper portion. If you are not familar with that forum I can post a link later if you need.

My personal take would be , that the engineers at Yamaha had good reason to add those struts, they certianly did not add them for the looks, so they probably have a very useful function that if removed could cause problems in the long run. But that is just me.[/QUOTE]

Really, you have that much faith in engineers? :stirthepot: You don't know engineers......

Seriously, yes they serve a purpose. Looks like they provide a stiffer frame package but this may be achievable another way. Then again I have removed engineered stuff off of cars, trucks and motorcycles for years that only made them better............

Thanks for the link offer, if you don't mind that may be helpful.

  9. Anyone removed these? The motor appears to be solidly mounted without them. Assume they are there to tie the motor to the top frame to limit frame flex under load.

They could potentially be cut down flush with the cylinder to maintain cosmetics and the access to the front top would vastly improve.

Would like to know if the original version of the RSTD had them and if anyone has ridden without them. upgraded engine mounts from the V-Max aftermarket house may have the same affect.

Wanted to reach out before learning from doing........:fingers-crossed-emo

BTW, I am a professional so don't try this at home.

  10. I don't know the answer to the light.... I have the vmax rear gears and the dyna3k and monster ovals. We have snow here but I had the bike out out for 30 min before the snow hit and it felt awesome. Felt like I could get rubber out of a hard 2nd get shift. And the ovals sound awesome as well. It really woke the bike up. DO IT....you'll love it.

    I'd like to get a tach....never owned a bike that didn't have a tach

    Bob

Made up my mind to do the gears.. I want a tach as well and will probably add in the next few months. I would also like to add a power outlet (2).

  11. I don't pull a trailer nor ride heavily loaded........ I just want the acceleration advantage since this is the slowest street bike I have ever owned. Not looking for V-Max acceleration just something more than leisurely get up and go.

Already upgraded ignition, carbs, air filters and exhaust. Last mod for performance until she needs a rebuild. Then cams, springs etc.

Just a little concerned about raising the RPM's too much at 80 mph (speedo will register almost 90) which is where the bike will spend a fair amount of time since our highways are legal up to 75mph. If you don't run 80mph everyone flies by.

  12. You should have a 150/80-16 on your RSTD, it appears the one you received is a 130 which is the narrower tire. This is what you should have purchased from Dennis Kirk...

    https://www.denniskirk.com/dunlop/front-elite-3-150-80h-16-blackwall-tire.p543447.prd/543447.sku

I looked at that one and the conversion chart to make a decision and thought they were exact equivalents. So much for my IQ. Anyway, I see some are running this very tire and I think for my riding style this may work out well. I often ride the bike stripped down and would like it to be more maneuverable so this tire may be the ticket.

  13. Thanks for all the input gentlemen. Ordered E 3's off the Dennis Kirk site. Free shipping. Will do the wheel removal myself and take them in for mounting and balancing. Probably will do the V-Max gear change as well. New plugs and Yamaha synthetic and filter on the workbench.
