Server Upgrade Happening Soon....as in NOW!

I am in the process of updating our site to the secure HTTPS protocol. It's not that we share any credit card information and etc. here because when you pay your subscriptions, it takes you to a PayPal site which has been secure ever since we started.

The reason I am doing it is to get rid of the "this site is insecure" warnings that some of you see. Also, some newer browsers are even more restrictive and might even call this site "insecure" or take it as possibly harmful.

So, I have purchased the necessary SSL certificates and am in the process of installing them and making the necessary changes.

The URL for this site will change to https://www.venturerider.org Not the "s" at the end of the http. That is the only change in the url. A redirect will be put in place when I am done so that if you don't change your bookmarks, it will automatically forward you to the new URL.

I will post again when the changes are complete.

"To pay for your subscription using PayPal click the button below and follow the onscreen instructions."

Don have you considered that the PayPal link should have additional info? For example (clicking the link will open other payment options) I know the rest of the world isn't as confused as I am but, many of us don't have PayPal thus we don't tend to press those links!

I'm not sure what you mean. PayPal is the only way to pay the subscription online.

What causes that is the fact that over the years, people have "linked" images rather than upload them directly to the site. There is no easy way to remedy that issue other than to go through the entire site and delete them.

People who have never used paypal may not realize that you do not need a paypal account to make a payment through paypal.

This sentence reminds me o a Monty Python skit.

OK...one of the things causing ALL the threads to show insecure was the award images and the flags. All the images linked to our postbits had to be redirected to https. Pain in the butt but it's done.

So, that is all I can do. There will STILL be a LOT of threads that will give you that warning. It is caused by any links that anybody posts in a thread that is not an https link. If you post any link starting with http, that is a link to an insecure site and will generate that message.

Also, some things in our signatures would cause it. For example, any member who replies to a post and has the weather banner in their signature, it will create an insecure error.

That's just how it works. I think that it will be years before all sites are secure and years before people get into the habit of post https links rather than http links. So it is what it is.

I'll take a screwdriver and well cut wrench over soft switching any day.

Any other day Wasaga Beach with a tall drink and bikini scenery. That is of course assuming Marcarl isn't on the beach hogging all the under 30s graduates..

Don, I have issues getting in with the https://www.venturerider.org as it would show me the listing for the directories for the appilication. I was able to pick out the forum directory and was then given the forum page and login. I tried it a couple of times and received the same directory listing. I did change the bookmark of URL to this, https://www.venturerider.org/forum/forum.php and was able to access directly into the site that way.

I am using Windows 10, and Firefox Nightly 63.0a1 but have been using this browser for a long time with no issues in the past accessing the site.

Just wanted to share what is occurring for me. If you need any testers, feel free to contact me.

You might need to clear your cache. ??? Windows 10 works fine on my end, with the couple exceptions already noted. :smash2:

It should be working OK now. Let me know. I have no idea what happened. Yesterday I modified the .htaccess file to automatically redirect any traffic to the .https secure link. It was working fine. Then I got Cimmer's report and did some checking and the .htaccess file was completely missing. Like it had been removed from the server. Nobody else has access to the server except for me and the hosting company. I just sent them a message to find out if they had removed it for some reason but they are great and have never done anything like that before. Even if it was causing some type of issue, they would have let me know. I'm completely perplexed.

Don, I was able to get in with just doing a manual entry on the address line with just http://www.venturerider.org and it directed me to the login in page. I would say you have it fixed. I was able to access the site after the change to the https so was surprised with it gave me the directory listings instead.

Thanks for all that you do here Don..

This may or may not be related to cimmer's problem.

Another forum I frequent is having major problems with the Firefox browser. It displays the forum in a windows explorer type bullet point tree format with few graphics and no navigational tools. It displays and operates normally on Chrome and Brave browsers.

With all of the problems noted I haven't had so much as a hic-cup accessing the board. My bookmark doesn't include the https, and just starts with www. Once here, the address window shows the https prefix.... I'm running Chrome, and still using some of my old bookmarks imported from IE, which is where my VR bookmark is located. Anything new get tagged to my Chrome bookmark file... Also still using Windows 7....

Interesting. I had to look up info about the Brave browser. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)

The concept of a browser with a built in ad blocker is interesting. I realize that a lot of internet content I look at has to be paid for by someone. I'm very dissapointed in the volume of garbage that has flooded the internet, and appears to be poisoning peoples' minds and actions.

I do use an ad blocker. I do make a contribution to wikipedia every year.

Chrome has an adblocker extention that can be turned on or off at your discretion...

yes. I've been using it for about 3 years.

I do see more and more 'stuff' that websites are putting up that seems to defeat the blocker though.

I seem to have found a glitch.

I was trying to edit the price in my classified and when I hit the save button at the bottom I get -

[h=2]VR Classifieds Message[/h]

Script not called correctly.

The new price and other edits do not show up at all.
