Now I went and done it

Yep, I done it good this time.

Yesterday morning I was backing the bike out of the shed to ride in to work, then it happened, heard a loud POP, and the next thing I knew the bike and I were both laying in the grass in great pain. It took me a while to get my old carcass up off the ground, I took one step and found myself laying in the grass again. At this point I realized that there was some real damage to my right ankle. It took a lot but on just one leg I managed to pick the bike up and put it back into the shed, most likely for the winter. I then hobbled my way to my truck and took myself to the ER. My ankle was so weak I could only push the gas pedal far enough to get 15 -20 mph.

The ER doc examined my ankle and said it looks like a classic ruptured Achilles tendon, but I needed to go see the specialist ASAP

So today that is where I was, at the specialist, she said yup it is a complete tear, about 2 inches above where it connects to the heel.

So now comes the fun.

I am tentatively scheduled for surgery on Sept 1 then will come months of rehab. Doc said most people take 6 months to a year to get back to normal. An elite athlete can heal in 3 to 6 months. So of course my goal is to all healed by the end of this year. After all I am an elite athlete in my own mind.

Arrrrrrgggggggg

I hate going to Docs and even more so hospitals.

That don't sound like no fun at all. All I can do for you is ask the Great Master to have a hand in your next process,,, so I will do that. Hopefully you'll heal well and be ready to ride again next year. Seems like this is the year of low miles for lots of folks, and now your adding to the woe.

Blessings!

I feel for ya FF!

I popped my left Achilles tendon several months ago pushing my Ranger after the timing belt snapped. The initial pain wasn't too bad but it dropped me like a rock and my ankle swelled up and bruised horribly. It took about 3 months before I could walk without a limp. My left heal is still numb but I have full range of motion and no pain now.

I hope your surgery goes well.

Noooooooooooooooo! So sorry to hear you're hurt! Did it just let go? Did you do it slipping or did bike do it? Be compliant with Dr's orders. Make sure you have a really sharp PT because it's all about the rehab in cases like yours.

Sorry to hear that you got hurt. I am surprised that they will operate. I ripped mine loose in Guntersvile Alabama during the international there, while traversing the river bed at one of our stops. it was painful and I wrapped the ankle and lower leg and continued to ride, not knowing at the time what I did. The leg got a good ripe purple colour. So I went to my family Doctor when I got home and after getting checked out was told I ripped loose an Achilles Tendon. When I asked him what the repair procedure was he said "nothing they don't re-attach them any more". Apparently there are three tendons and when one lets go the other two just strengthen to make up for it. Supposedly they get better results this way than by intrusive surgery. Apparently a very common sports injury.

I have to say though once my leg got past the healing process, it feels as good and strong as it ever was.

Hope your surgery goes well and your up up and about soon.

My doc just kind of shook her head.

We did discuss the options of letting it heal on its own vs surgery.

Normally, the older you are the more they lean toward letting it heal on its own.

It is only young, athletic people that they generally do surgery on.

The reason is that total healing time is similar for both approaches, but the surgically repaired will end up stronger with less of a chance of reinjury.

I do like that this doc considers me "young and athletic", I do have an active life style.

This is the same doc that repaired the torn ligaments in this same ankle 2-1/2 years ago. She was at the time amazed at my healing ability, She said 12 year old's don't heal as fast as I did, This factored into the decision to do surgery this time around.

She also knows that I am the type of person that will follow her instructions religiously, Will have to see if I end up with the same PT as I had last time, we got along well together and she did a great job on this same ankle before.

As far as getting me to be "normal". Does anyone really want that to happen???? Is there even anyone here that is "normal"?

I'm glad to hear you've got a good Doc!

Take care of yourself and Prayers UP!

P.S. On the good side....Now you will have down time for designing our fuel injection system! Grins!

There is no telling just how much trouble I can get in while sitting around idle with nothing to do but think about stuff.

I will have a lot of time to, Doc said most people will need 6 months to a year for full recovery. But an elite athlete like me might only need 3-6 months. I am hoping to be back fully ambulatory by the end of the year.

@cowpuc is probably dreading the thought of what new mods I can dream up for his favorite machine in the world, The infamous Wisconsin White Washer.

WHAT IN THE WILD WILD WORLD OF END OF SEASON MISHAPS IS GOIN ON AROUND HERE!!!!!:scared::doh::doh:

Last time something like this happened the whole east coast ended up getting buried under 20 feet of snow,,, Florida lost over 20 million dollars in crop damage due to the HUGE walk-in freezer the state had become, the southern folks had to walk to work cause they had no form of White Wash removal equipment in their road maintenance fleets, clothing sales in far off places like San Diego come to a complete stop as Canadian Winter clothing had to be shipped in for their survival needs and us folks along the Lake Michigan lakeshore were half done with cutting our own version of that ice highway up in Alaska across the pond so we could hunt down the lop eared "ice in his vains" varmint who was responsible for the mess... And all THAT was done in response to a "dare" by someone down yonder making a comment like - naahhh nahhh dee boo boo,, Fool and his Wisconsin White Washer cant get us down here = now that same lop eared varmint HAS to sit idle with nothing to do but tittle??? NO WAY!!

A short letter to Fool's foot doc and PT:

Dear Doc:

YES - Jeff heals VERY quickly! PLEASE fix the thing BEFORE those Canucks start sending their cold weather southward waking up the need to harass his neighbors that lies dorment in Fools sinister blood during the summer.. NOW = sew that tendon back on,, ship him to PT,, PT people = bend him and stretch him - dont let his squinty little beady eyes fool ya makin ya think he cant handle it,, that squint is hiding thoughts of planning what he is gonna do to us,, his friends,,, if he isnt better before winter... FIX HIM = NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about this Jeff,, Prayers Up brother - hoping and praying all goes well neighbor!!!

Puc

I was going to suggest not just any doctor will do and that you should see one who specializes in sports injuries. Seem like the one you have probably knows her stuff.

Good luck with the healing process.

Have to ask, can we now expect a working fuel injection system for the mighty V4 by Christmas?

Your Doc & PT wouldn't happen to be young & attractive would they? That's why you keep doing these things!

Seriously, no fun at all, sorry to hear.... hope all goes well & that we'll see you competing in the next Olympics! Well at least able to push that machine of yours around again.

Funny you should mention that, They are both very attractive and fairly young. :whistling: But I do have to say that even with that I do not get to see enough of them to make this worth the OUCH factor. It will be a month yet before I find out if that same PT is still working there. I hope she is. We got along well together. So many people I know absolutely HATE their PT.

As for the next Olympics, HAHAHAHAHAahhahahahaah!

I would really hate to be the one that destroyed so many young lives by having an old grey fat man make them look bad on world wide TV....:confused24:
