Stache Posted May 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 7, 2017 Got the old ones out. Pistons will not retract into caliper. Ive loosened bleed screw, tried a C clamp. wont seem to move. What am I missing?
MikeWa Posted May 7, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 7, 2017 I generally open the bleeder as you did. Reinstall the brake pad and press the piston in with a cheapo steering wheel puller. The side clearance on the piston is very small and it is extremely easy to get it cocked in the bore. Then it will not move. Mike
MikeWa Posted May 7, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 7, 2017 Ok I tried to edit my response to remove the wheel puller but the program won't let me. So I will just go back into my hole and shut up for mow. Mike
leo3wheel Posted May 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted May 8, 2017 Doing rear brakes on my trike today. Plan to bleed my brakes anyway, so suctioned all fluid out of reservoir. Flushed pistons well with brake cleaner to remove dirt. Made a tool with a wooden dowel. This tool pressed the pistons in squarely with no difficulty. Tomorrow, I put everything back together. Stache Posted May 9, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted May 9, 2017 Got it. Pressure on the pistons needs to be absolutely in line or they bind. Clamp I was using wouldn't line up square so I got creative. Used the old brake pads, one inside, one outside to provide a way to fit a clamp on either side and provide simultaneous pressure square with the line of the piston. Tighten the clamps evenly and the pistons slide back in one at a time. Easy peasy. refill reservoir, quick bleed, pump the pedal a few times, and I have brakes. Now all I need is some riding weather.
