Anyone replaced their RSV stator with one of these?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STATOR-FITS-YAMAHA-ROYAL-STAR-VENTURE-MM-XVZ1300-2000-/291187486778?fits=Model%3ARoyal+Star&hash=item43cc20703a:g:kukAAOSwDk5TvtgV&vxp=mtr

If not, then what is recommended?

P.S.

And I did do quite a bit of research searching on the 2nd gen forum, but really didn't see much of what folks used as replacements.

P.S.S.

I also see that there are stators listed online for 1999-2007 models and different ones listed for 2008-2013 models.

Anyone know what changed?

My bike's a 2000.

Would a later model stator fit and maybe work better?

Hey Joe.

Are you running their HO stator?

And are you running a stock RR with it? I think I saw where you had some RR problems with the HO stator. Or maybe I read/remember wrong.

Just disconnected my RR and ohm tested my stator. I wish I would have gone to magician school! Would have probably helped a lot getting to that stator connection. Just three inches more on that lead would have been so nice.

Anyway, all were even but high, 0.7, on all legs.

That one looks like the one out of Quebec and I would NOT recommend it but it's hard to tell for sure because they are not saying what make it is. I would recommend the Rick's. I know I don't want to do it twice.. a bit of a job changing out the stator.

I bought a stator from Ricks Motor Sports (21-412H) New Hot Shot Yamaha Stator. It was $160.00 with $28.51 shipping. So it is the high output stator and I'm using the OEM R/R. I think I installed it last February. Have not had any charging problems since. It's not an easy job to do so I don't recommend some cheap aftermarket replacement.

I have no idea about the change for 08-13. I have an 07. :080402gudl_prv:

Thanks, Wayne and Ray.

Ray, I read your posts from your own experiences.

Chasing these charging issues can be such a maze.

Glad you got good results.

And thanks for taking us along for your journey to charging-fix-it-land.

$28.51 shipping? I know stators are heavy, but to me, that's a lot of shipping costs. Oh, well.

I agree with y'all to pay the good money for good product. Don't wanna go in there twice.

Just saw the one from Rick's and another offered at Buckeye.

Looked to be similar in their promises of increased output. Didn't know which way to go.

Bought the VStar parts from Rick's and was satisfied.

I do know what to expect with the change-out. Had to do it on my wife's former VStar650.

Funny, but it can't be any harder than getting to this dad-gum stator connector. Lol

It's funny that that link states that this stator offered works for a 2000 Venture, but is not compatible with a 2000 MM Venture.

But they do offer free shipping.

yeah I run across that all the time.. for some reason the MM comes up as a different breed but rest assured the stator is the same as well as almost every part. Other than a few logos such as the hinges on the bags and the speedo as well as the small plaque on the trunk there is no real difference. The hinges and speedo (dash) are only different in that they actually say Millennium Edition

I also installed the Ricks about 2 summers ago and it has been flawless since. I don't believe mine was the HO. To get it in I had to loosen the exhaust on that side to drop it a little to get it out of the way. Biggest challenge was finding the plug under the drivers seat that the darn thing plugs into.. Probably spent more time finding that plug than actually changing the stator

Yeah.

I don't know why that happens.

Maybe they just don't add our MM model number in their databases.

I bought mine used with 10k miles showing in June of 2002.

I can say Rick products are good in my use. I had to replace the stator on my 07 Vulcan. Its a weak spot with them as well. Every guy I talked to on boards used a Ricks when theirs went out. All have had flawless performance.

I did not get the HO stator, turned out most of my problems were in the R/R connector I was just too stubborn to admit it because it ohmed out fine but was breaking down under load, replaced the connector and all was well with the world.

,,,,:scratchchin:,,,, I know you are talking about your 2nd Gen here Joe but I gotta ask.. Is the connector you are speaking of the first connector in the 3 phase line coming out of the stator? Reading between the lines here, does the wire harness that contains the 3 - (possibly white in color, probably all the same color) stator output wires terminate at the R/R and is that the connector you are talking about? The reason I ask is because on the 1st Gen's I have owned (at least the MK1's, cant speak for the MK2's cause I have yet to own one), the first terminal in that harness is located on the left side about midway down on the frame spar. I have had NOTHING but problems with that terminal thru the years.. My last encounter involved a replacement connector developing enough resistance that it melted the inside of the connector allowing the inner spade (its a 3 spade connector) to make contact with another spade and taking out the stator. That was the one down at Squid and Sweetnothings!! That terminal was less then 3 years old, Squid and I "hard wired: the new stator in because I got sick of fighting that terminal.

Wondering if we are talking about basically the same issue with the same terminal just being relocated? If that is the case (and out of curiosity), is the terminal you are talking about encased in the body of Regulator or is it on a pig tail that hangs from it? Wonder if resistance at that terminal could be cause for some of the R/R failure issues I have read about?

Joe? Stubborn? No Way!

Thanks for the info. My connector at the RR looks great. No corrosion or heat stress apparent.

If mine were reading 0.7 on all three legs and no shorts to ground I'd do more testing before replacing.

Have you checked AC voltage across all three pair?

Yes. At 2100 rpm with RR disconnected got 57 volts a/c equal on all three pair. A-B, B-C, and C-A.

I was hoping the .7 ohms, since it is equal on all three legs, might be tolerable for now.

With my bike all together and everything connected, I was getting at least some (albeit slow) voltage rise when revving the engine.

Wouldn't go above 13 though.

Yamaha doesn't specify AC voltages at the stator. Off hand though, those sound good. Perhaps someone will chime in that knows what they typically do.

It's very difficult to get precise readings in that 0.5 - 1.0 ohm range with consumer equipment. I wouldn't let a reading of 0.7 concern me in the least, especially since you get the same on all three pair.

I think you're probably going to end up needing to look into electrical connections and the regulator/rectifier.

  • 2 months later...

I replaced with a Ricks HO stator and Voltage regulator.. Didn't really check anything before replacing.. Just knew I was only getting about 12.5 volts at the battery. Never had a dead battery but always worried me... While doing the install I found most of my problem... Burnt up wires and partially melted stator connection. I'm still waiting on a replacement for the connector- I found a source at http://www.rmstator.com $9 shipped for free out of New Hampshire??

The real reason for my post was to let you know about a place to buy the stator on ebay- Typically $159... Got it for $110 shipped free. (LionParts) http://www.ebay.com/itm/321838603752?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thanks for the info, I just bought two connectors one directly from Rick's motorsports after I screwed up the one I bought from Dennis Kirk.

I think Ricks wanted $23 plus shipping.. so the $9 one made me happy... :) seems like shipping is pretty fast as well.

I think I got it on sale and Rick's gave me a big break on the replacement one. Be careful when you crimp the pins that is what I messed up on.
