Techron just made me a believer!!!!!!!!!!

I've been using Marvel mystery oil and Sea Foam for such a long time . Well, I used both to try and clean my carbs out , I had an idle issue where it was going up and down and when i rode it for a while it would stay real high and if I turned it down to where it sounded normal the next day when you started it it wouldn't idle without the choke out then you'd ride it and the same thing the idle would shoot right up. So I tried techron I did the same thing as I did with the others .I disconnected the fuel line put a funnel in it and flooded the carbs with it and let it sit over night. Well a NIGHT and DAY difference it idles fine the throttle response is normal and sounds great. This stuff just made me a believer also it was $6.97 enough for 20 gallons of gas. The other thind Sea Fom and Marvel made the engine harder to start and smoked a hell of a lot. The techron didn't smoke at all and started right up.

:soapbox:

You see...unlike those that drink Seafoam for breakfast with their eggs and bacon, I am a fervent believer in using Chevron Techron, and I have cases of the stuff on the shelves in my shop.

I am :backinmyday: enough that I do use Marvel Mystery Oil...when the time is right, and the need calls for it. I believe in MMO, and have used it for more than 40 years. And, on the rare occassion that a politician in Washington DC actually tells the truth about anything in life, I do use Seafoam in those rare moments. BUT...Seafoam, contrary to what some of these drug-addicted Seafoam users think...is NOT to be used as a daily cocktail for cleaning fuel or oil systems.

For what the rest of you use Seafoam for...I have been using Chevron Techron for, for the past 25 + years. In my shop, you will find it well stocked on Techron, and a one gallon red plastic bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil.

It makes me cringe everytime I read another post about some rider wanting to use Seafoam as a daily enema, to clean something out. It has its' time and place in the mechanical world, but it is not the fix-all for everything that ails you.

Use Chevron Techron, as a quarterly fuel system cleaner, and as a stabilizer for the winter time storage, and your machines will run for a long time.

I had a sticking float on my Venture. So I did the straight Sea-foam soak for two days . Drained it into a clear glass container. Then did a straight Techron soak for two days right after the seafoam soak. I caught the Techron in a clear glass container. There was a definite darker color to the Techron container. Glean what you want from this info. The float hasn't been a problem since. One of my friends was a Ford mechanic at a local dealership and has told me that there was a Ford bulletin on using Techron to clean a sticking fuel gauge on their cars. He has used it to fix alot of them. Sure beats pulling the tank to fix. I use it occasionally in the bike since. It is a little cheaper than sea-foam. Supposedly Shell gasoline has it in all grades of their gas.:D

I used Techron a long time ago. Need to revisit it. As I have said Sea-Foam is great at times. I do think using it regularly keeps a lot of problems away. But it is not the only cleaner I use mainly because it has gotten so costly. My shop has Sea-Foam, BerryMan's Chem Tech, Marvel Mystery Oil, Star Tron and probally a couple others maybe some old Techron in there. My point has always been use as needed. I use Sea-Foam several times a year because I think it prevents problems.

Use what ever you feel safe using. Some cleaners will ruin your carbs.

Need to try some on my small engines like generator and pressure washer that dont get used a whole lot. I try to run the carb dry before I put them away. but 8 out of 10 times I end up pulling the carb apart before I can get them to run. As Phoo says "oh bother"

U know this is a tough crowd, but what kind of blinker fluid do U use

I use Tech foan mystery lube blinker oil in my bikes!

Wow! this is a good thread. seeing as all my vehicles are old, 84 Honda Sabre v65, 84 Ford Mustang GT Turbo and 86 Yamaha Venture Royale anything that keeps them running "younger" is food to me going to buy some and try it this season. The Mustang sits alot and seems to have a sticky valve, and the Yamaha needed a couple of tank fulls of sea foam to really get it running right last year. But now it runs like a champ. But this Techron stuff sounds good and i'm going to try it.

I'm usually only a reader of this forum to learn about the Venture and as such I usually don't have much to say, but If you're more interested in gas stabilization than a detergent take a look at Startron. It's used for boats and does a wonderful job. Pretty cost effective also which is important when the tank holds 300 gallons.

I wasn't kidding. There was an older guy when I was a kid that would just say the stupidist things out of the blue. I am 57 now and was talking to his younger cousin the other day and found out that his father was also his grandfather. Explained a lot. You don't know me. If we were acquainted and had kidded around with each other I could understand something like that maybe. As it is your lucky I wasn't standing by you when I read that.

Serious question....no bs'n! I get pure gas with no ethanol and no additives (cheap gas by old standards). I've been treating it with either 3/4 of an oz with B12 or 1 oz of Seafoam per gallon. Now Techron is more expensive than Seafoam. Now would one recommend skipping Seafoam and B12 for Techron every 3k miles? Thoughts!

The answer to your question is: Yes.

The B12 is good/okay. But the Techron is much better than the Seafoam.

Allow me to use an analogy:

Using Techron periodically is like using a small ball-peen hammer to carefully smooth out the door dings in your car. Using Seafoam is like using a 10 pound sledge hammer to bend the frame back into place, when the insurance company has totaled your car, and you buy back the salvage.

Every product has its' place, and the correct time to use it. I do think there is a place and a time to use Seafoam. My concern is that I see a lot of posts on this forum from people that are using Seafoam as a regular dietary supplement to their fuel system, and that is not what it is designed for. (no...it is not !)

The Berryman's B-12, and the Chevron Techron are better suited for dietary supplement to a fuel system.

Given the choice, I would use the Techron. The Berryman's B-12 gets placed in between the Techron and the Seafoam, as far as needs or severity.

B12 ?

So should I add "iron" instead of safety chrome? Put in Viagra if I drop the bike and need help "getting it up" ?

On a serious note... I put Sea-foam in the tank every couple months (maybe 1/3 of a can). Some would say it is too much but so far it works for me. For Winter storage I run the tank down into reserve, put 1/2 a can in the tank and then fill with gas. Run it on reserve for a 10-20 mile ride to pull the mix thru the reserve tank and carbs and then park it for the winter.

I use major brand gas stations and always regular unleaded.

And you will be rebuilding those 2nd Gen carbs before I rebuild mine.
