Yes this is a common problem on 1st gens.The gear that drives the odometer is metal but the driven odometer gear is plastic and wears out.The gearhead for the speedometer in seperate.

Others may had sucess in repairing these but I have not been able to take one apart in such away that it can be put back together.my solution was to replace the whole guage.It can be removed from the cluster fairly easily.For those of you who haven't experienced this yet now would be a good tine to go in and grease those gears.I use LaBells 109 teflon grease for model locomotive gears which are usually plastic against metal.
