I took my 89 into mechanic. He replaced the rear bearing. Now afterward, it doesn't sound the same. There is a grinding rumbling sound that is not noticeably until the bike is about 45 mph or if you let off the throttle suddenly and brake with the engine. I took it back. He double checked everything and said it was okay.

I don't know, whadda ya think?

What exactly do you mean by 'REAR BEARING'? If you mean the rear bearing on the intermediate gear assembly (or where the universal joint is connected), I'd suspect that the intermediate gear clearance might be different now, causing some howl. The Yammie manual has a proceedure in it to adjust this clearance.

Or did you mean a bearing in your shaft drive gearbox?

DO YOU mean wheel bearing ? Wheel bearing are to be done correctly. There a many hacks out there that think they know what they are doing...and don't. As for the rear end. The bearings are good for 80k or more and then you need to look for a rear drive altogether if it's bad.
