Painting a Helmet

And I'd just like to paint my old marked up white helmet black to match the wife's rarely used one cause only the white ones were on sale in my size and I wear mine all the time so it gets marked up on the white which probably wouldn't show as much if it was white like my wife's who hardly ever uses hers cause she doesn't go with me on the bike for one reason or other that I don't care about anymore cause I'm gettin used to riding all by myself and can take corners as fast as I want.

And I don't have issues! (too fast, she says and do you have to lean when you go around corners she says?)

You can get a fancy as you want....Spend several hundred dollars on an air brush and put designs on it.........go buy a quart of automotive paint......and spend 70 dollars for that.........or you can go to Lowes and they have a rack in the spray paint area that has a somewhat new paint made just for plastic and acrylics. Pick your color, and also while there buy a can of spray clear coat. Paint the helmet.......read the can on the clear coat.....some are not made to go over some paints........you can do all this for $10.00. The clear coat will protect the paint job........for awhile. Has anyone painted their helmets to match their bikes?

I don't want flames, or graphics, just simply matching my 07 blue.

What type/make of paint, and special insights would be greatly appriciated

I'm getting ready to paint mine too......

Will be going to Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Marts paint section:

Pick up:

(2) spray paint ..that matches bike color as close possible

(1) spray can of clear coat

(1) can of Acetone to clean before painting.

(1) Roll painters tape

(1) pkg of super fine steel wool

  • Remove inner lining of helmet
  • remove chin strap with out metal loop..(will explain below).
  • mask chin strap with metal loop including metal loop
  • remove any snaps
  • mask air vent if you dont want to remove it.
  • You can mask / fill helmet with news paper if you want.
  • Wipe helmet with acetone to remove dirt and finger print oil. Note: Fingers will turn white because it removes the oils from your fingers and skin too.
  • Hang helmet by metal loop from a nail.
  • Clean again with acetone one more time to be sure..
  • shake spray paint can well (1 minute)
  • apply (2) coats of paint
  • after paint has dried, lightly buff with super fine steel wool
  • Wipe clean again with acetone.. acetone will not remove fresh dried paint.
  • shake spray paint again and apply two more coats
  • remove masking on chin strap so it doest stick to strap
  • let dry over night
  • re-mask chin strap with metal loop
  • shake clear coat can well
  • spray clear coat per directions
  • remove masking on chin strap again so it doesnt stick to strap
  • clean up area ...
  • let helmet dry over night / per instructions
  • re-assemble helmet

Time for a ride....:thumbsup2:

Only thing you have to be careful with painting a helmet is that you need to prep it correct. If you use the wrong chemicals you will weaken the shell and that could be a hazzard. Im not sure of the exact proceedure but for safety do a search on it.

Scotty

Acetone will not hurt (or weaken) the helmet..:thumbsup2:

Good instructions... what about the DOT labels?

Also, use a tac cloth right after wiping with acetone to get rid of any dust particles.

Ok, your killing me..

SOME people understand that some basic COMMON SENSE applies..:rasberry:

If one cant figure the little things out in life, they surely shouldnt be tackling the bigger things...:thumbsup2:

Use a hair dryer, heat them up and remove them prior to cleaning and painting.

Kit... I'm at work... I have a boring job...well, the job itself isn't boring ...it's just that I don't generally have a lot to do. I run a computer network for a small inbound call operator company. Everything is running smoothly and about all I generally have to do is some daily monitoring which doesn't take very long. It's one of those kind of positions where they don't really need a full-time person on-site but their bound by their contract to have one. So, I lucked out... great way to spend the last few years working before retirement.

N-E-Wayz, it gives me a lot of time to razz people in here LOL

It was -8 degrees C when I rode the scoot, to work this morning. Not too much frost on the seat. I read the forum after PT (during lunch break), before heading back to work for the afternoon.
