Tail of the Dragon late Sept

Recommended Posts

Planning to ride out to the Dragon in late Sept and spend about 6 days out on the road. IF anyone is interested in riding along or meeting up please post here. Dates can be OPEN but, as of now, my vacation starts Sept 25 for a week.

Now, also I would like recommendations on where to stay and what to see in the area including NC/Tenn/Va. I am interested in Riding the Dragon of course but, also want to ride the Blue Ridge and Cherolaka Hwy, as well as any other recommendations here. I dont think I want to spend all the time right down the street from the Dragon (hwy 129) as I know there are a lot of other things to see in this part of the country. I am planning on leaving really early on the 25th and want to be back within the week. I plan to do a Iron Butt ride to get as far along as I can and I think it will be about 800mi or almost there. I like Senery, twistys and good food, so what do you say! What should I see? Ride? Eat?

Can't leave earlier to go to Ashville meet so this will be my chance to see the area.:hurts:

Several of us live in north Georgia, not too far from the Dragon. I'm about 14 miles from US 129 in Georgia.

Be glad to ride with you some, and could show you the roads near 129 in Georgia. There's some good riding.

btw. US 129 into NC was still closed as of TODAY. The detour signs on the TN side were still out as I rode back from MD on TN 68 past Tellico. I spent last night just south of Knoxville in Lenoir City as I was too hot & tired to ride the last 3 hours home on Sunday night.

Thanks everyone keep the info coming.

I want to ride all over the area buy need more info as to how long I need to stay in a specific area. Would love to ride in N Georgia with some members too. Question is where should I stay to ride the Dragon/BRP/Cher/NGeorgia? Should I stay in Robbinsville/MValley/Cherokee/Asheville etc? I know riding int he mountain can be decieving on time frames. I want to see as much as I can and I plan on leaving the area and heading over to Virginia if possible and then west across Tenn for the trip back home. I want to be home by the end of the 6th day.

Again thanks for the replies.

Check out http://www.ironhorsenc.com - they are a motorcycle lodge with accomodations from camping to multiple bedroom houses. It is the best place I have stayed oriented towards motorcycles. You won't be disappointed. Centrally located to all the rides you mentioned. I was just there in June for a week. They serve breakfast and dinner if you desire to sign up and pay for them which have always been a good value.

Visit Wheels through Time Museum in Maggie Valley. http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com/ This is a very interesting place. You will be looking at a 1918 motorcycle and the owner will walk up and ask if you want to see it run. And then start it up. He offered us a ride on an old Harley, sidecar setup when we were walking up.

If you have time - the Biltmore http://www.biltmore.com is also very interesting.

I might be interested in riding up that way with you if you are heading through the North Alabama area.

I am going across Alabama just not completely north. I am going to stop the fist night in Birmingham. Then to Atlanta and finally to either Asheville or Cherokee..just havent decided yet. I'll get back with you when its closer.

I have to agree with Mo River Rat stop in Maggie Valley and see the Wheels Through Time Museuem . We stoped there 2 years ago wright before he said he was moving to Arizona ( didn't , not sure why but glad he didn't ) because we are going to Gatlingberg Tenn the begning of Sept to ride the Dragon and go to maggie valley to the museuem again with my sister-in-law . I showed up pulling my barrell trail and Dale ( the owner says who has the barrell I said me , he said you and your misses get in free ) . Dale the owner is very nice . We also bought some t-shirts and before we left he gave us a bussiness card with 2 free passes signed on the back of it . (which I thought was cool ) . He fired a bike up in the museum and did a burn out inside which was also cool , he does it all the time when theres enough people there to see it . Well worth the time to go see, and make sure you take a camera you'll see bikes and stuff you've never seen before. :thumbsup2::thumbsup2::dancefool::dancefool::thumbsup2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

I should be able to ride with you a ways. US 129 (section of which is the Dragon) is about 15 miles from my house. Its good riding even in north Georgia. I've been wanting to go to the motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley, its a fine ride from here to there.

I'm an hour north of Atlanta.

A little heads up here. We just returned from making a big loop from home (2 hours south of St. Louis) to Knoxville, to north Georgia, back up to Asheville then back to Knoxville.

While in Asheville we were in a restaurant eating. There were some Harley riders there. They came in looking for me to let me know that their helmets were stolen off of their bike while they were inside.

When they called the cops to get permission to ride helmetless, the cop told them that they've been having a big problem with that around the area. The druggies are pawning the helmets for $5 or 10 bucks for dope money.

Luckily I had my helmets locked on. I rarely ever do that. Just had one of those gut feelings.

Ok date is set for this trip as OCt1-9th. I will ride first to Biloxi Ms and spend a full day there (I am addicted to poker tournaments). I will be leaving Biloxi on Sunday, Oct 3 and head to Robbinsville via Chatanooga and Cleveland Tenn to Tellico Plains then across the Cherokala to Robbinsville. I should arrive in Robinsville late Sunday afternoon. Then I plan on spending at least 2 and a half days int he Robbinsville/Asheville area. On Wednesday I will either head south thru Georgia with a seop somewhere in GA or head north and west for Nashville ( Can't seem to decide how I want to return to Texas). If I head south I will go to Panama City Fla for a one day visit. If I go the toward Nashville I will visit in Nashville then on to Memphis and south to Tunica MS ( again those dang Casinos calling my name) LOL Most likely I will take the southern route as I would like to see Panama City Fla. and maybe do some fishing.

Any recommendations or anyone want to ride along. I can front the room.

Now is OCt 1 would just get here.

If you get into Blairsville, GA you can take Hwy129 South until you reach Hwy 180 West. The road will go thru the Chatahoocee National Forest to the small town of Suches. From there go North on Hwt 60 back toward Blairsville. Great afternoon ride.

Cherokee NC has a casino which is about 45 mins from where you are staying. Bryson City is a great place to spend the night as well. I plan on riding up that way before I head back to Afghanistan just not sure when i will get the call and take the time off.
