Friends:

Facebook does not appeal to me, never has. I tried it, added one or two friends, and I have only made a couple of entries in 3 years, and only checked it about twice a year.

Now we hear of all the politics and corruption, and security problems, and now to top it off Mark Zuckerberg, a billionaire and co-founder of FB, called the users of Facebook, and I quote: "Dumb f**ks". ( he used ALL the letters!)

How can you stay in a place like that?

I prefer MySpace because its rich in media content and I've met many good friends there. Sure, its not perfect, but good enough for me! I plan to stay on MySpace.

Below are several links dealing with the problems of FB, and quitting FB, or heck, just google "how to quit facebook".

I know some of you are addicted and will never quit. At least look at some of these pages and then make your decision, with full knowledge of the outcome.

Funny thing, in one of your links I see a link to another article about how to overcome your myspace addiction.

Rumor has it that FB is going to start charging a monthly fee for an account. If that happens, then I will agree with the founder's comment and they can shut my account down when I won't pay it.

Same here. I check it out every now and then, but its not worth a monthly fee.

Yep...all the social websites have pros and cons, even this one....I know people who cant stand MySpace...but I do some band photography on the side and keep in touch with them that way...and other people too...mostly women...( no surprise there huh?). But addicted? No...I check it a couple times a day when I'm home...I havent loaded any 'apps' or games or any other content..fact is, I bet most of us spend more hours on THIS social website than the others...so it's all a matter of your preferences.

And BTW...ever since the days of Juno free email and ICQ messenger, there have ALWAYS been rumors about free sites starting to require payment. Seems to be a recurring theme. I dont think it would ever happen with Facebook, since they don't provide much content on their own, but the friends you make DO...and charging people is a sure way to run them off and deplete the audience for the advertisers. So I doubt it.

Hmmmmmm....I am not really seeing that much difference in Facebook and any other social networking site. I am not thinking the cons you listed are particular to Facebook. I have noticed a lot of those personality traits on.....well, perhaps they aren't all on Facebook.

The most interesting thing here is that MySpace still exists. I don't know anyone who uses it. I take that back; I've seen bands advertising that they have a link there, but just assumed they were too cheap or lazy to update their bizcards.

After about the millionth suspected malware download from MySpace, I blocked it at the router and my kids moved to FB.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I didnt mean to skewer anyones loyalties, and of course I know about the problems on myspace too.

There are technical glitches and phishing scams on both MS and FB...the difference for me is that facebook as a company is selling out your details to make money, they regard you ( us) as a 'dumb f**k', and they make the privacy settings bewildering and changing...privacy on there is a moving target....

Here are a few links to articles involving the scams and viruses on BOTH of those websites:

I said from the outset that MySpace is not perfect...but yep...still very much in use today.

Both sites have PLENTY of things to be critical about.

So ultimately, maybe Mark Zuckerberg was right about us, huh?

I don't do this social networking stuff. Call me on the phone or come by for a visit and we will chew the fat and drink some ice tea or maybe a brew if you are not driving. Just never could get into that stuff, getting old I guess. I use a prepay Tracfone as well, guess I will be an out cast.

Quite frankly, I agree with him. There are quite a few people that fit that description quite well.

I do use facebook, not to meet people or anything but to stay in contact with old friends. The company has said numerous times that they will never charge people to use it, and if they do, I'm done. For now, I can't argue with free. On top of that, I simply do not share anything that I would care if it got plastered all over the place. Like others said too, I don't use the 3rd party applications and keep things simple.

Some of that stuff was interesting to look at - thanks for posting it Brian.

I agree there all the same, there is no difference in facebook or any another social site. Including this one. There all in it for the buck and that's ok, it's there business and a lot of work. If I had 10,000 members I would do the same thing. :mo money:

Boomer....who's not too keen on letting the FBI know where the hell he is on any given day.

Hey Boomer, Your cell phone will track you better than Facebook. They know where you are, when they want you they will come and get you !!

Your starting to sound like Dale on "King of the Hill" :rotf:

Hmmm....found this little 35 minute podcast on scifri....talks about facebook's privacy policies, and how facebook shares most or all of your info with advertisers, including usernames and passwords, dates of birth, address, etc. One of the interviewees confirms that facebook's customers are its advertisers, and YOU , the members, are the product it is selling!

How the 3rd party applications you click on, or DONT click on, are grabbing your information. How your status updates ( and tweets) are used by employers and by lawyers to get info about you, in relation to employment or lawsuits, workers comp...etc. Those status updates are admissable in courts! Possible compromised doctor-patient files! They discuss how status update and tweets are being stored in the Library of Congress...WOW!

Ok...Mark Zuckerberg is doing some damage control:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_gadg/20100524/tc_ytech_gadg/ytech_gadg_tc2204

From the above link:

In an open letter published Monday in the Washington Post (whose chairman, Donald E. Graham, just so happens to sit on Facebook's board of directors), Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook has been "growing quickly" and admitted that "sometimes we move too fast."

"Many of you thought our controls were too complex," Zuckerberg's letter reads. "Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls" — uh, you can say that again — "but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark."

Zuckerberg promised, in "coming weeks," privacy controls that will be "much simpler to use" — including an "easy way to turn off all third-party services" that can access your account.

myspace AND facebook are rewriting some code to fix some of the problems.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704513104575256701215465596.html

Quoted from the above linked page:

The sharing of users' personally identifiable data was first flagged in a paper by researchers at AT&T Labs and Worcester Polytechnic Institute last August. The paper, which drew little attention at the time, evaluated practices at 12 social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and found multiple ways that outside companies could access user data.

The researchers said in an interview they had contacted the sites, which some sites confirmed. But nine months later, the issue still exists.

The issue is particularly significant for Facebook on two fronts: the company has been pushing users to make more of their personal information public and the site requires users to use their actual names when registering on the site.

A Facebook spokesman acknowledged it has been passing data to ad companies that could allow them to tell if a particular user was clicking an ad. After being contacted by the Journal, Facebook said it changed its software to eliminate the identifying code tied to the user from being transmitted.

Jeeze.
