Godlover Posted May 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 20, 2010 If any of you live near Newton, Iowa and want to be a part of a neat event on May 26th come on over. I plan to ride in it and I've heard that we have close to 400 cycles committed already. Attention all motorcycle enthusiasts!!! Jasper County will be sending close to forty WWII vets and a handful of Korea Vets to DC to see the monuments built in their honor. We will be meeting at the Jasper County Community Center (former Aldi's building) at 4:00 p.m. on the 26th of May. There will be two charter buses of WWII vets and their spouses headed to Prairie Meadows for a send off banquet. As a sign of respect and honor, there will be an escort of numerous motorcycles leading the way from Newton to Altoona over the route. All motorcylce enthusiasts are welcom to participate!!We hope to have the streets and bridges along the route lined with individuals showing their support and respect for theses veterans. The caravan will be lead by the Patriot riders group. We will pull out at 4:30 sharp. We will make our way up first avenue to Rusty Wallace Drive. We will proceed to I-80 where Sheriff Mike Balmer will escort us into Polk County. We will turn off at the Mitchellville/Altoona exit to Adventureland Drive. We hope to have the streets of Altoona lined with well wishers as we make our way to Prairie Meadows. Once we reach Prairie Meadows, the Marine Corps Color Guard will welcome the vets in and a bagpiper will lead them into the grand banquet hall. People lined up on every bridge & over pass, along side roads and rest areas. When the Vet's got off the two buses some were tearing up (as was I) and some had the biggest smiles I bet they ever had on their faces! Got to meet Mark, AKA Godlover, what a great guy. Did not have his wife but had another lady ride with him!? (HEY BOOMERCPO LISTEN UP, I think Mark could give you and me a pointer or two? I know I plan on hanging around him more. .,,qwjsn Ouch quit hitting me honey I was just kidding! LOL No, it was a great day, no rain, very little wind and a lot of great Vet's to send off. Can't get much better than that! Mark, went up to Baxter bike night after and there was 100 + bikes there for that too! Godlover Posted May 27, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted May 27, 2010 It was fantastic! I had tears in my eyes as I saw all those people along side the road and standing on the bridges. Unbelievable is the word! I praise God for all who have served our country. What is really cool is that every WW2 Vet in Jasper County had the opportunity to go to Washington DC to see their memorial. Isn't that awesome? An added blessing was meeting another Venturerider! I think Bryan and I can get side jobs as bouncers at a bar somewhere. Yep, I had another gal on my bike. Her dad was a WW2 and he rode on the back of their trike with her husband. Deb, Thanks, It was a GREAT day, weather was great but the best part was seeing the Vet's enjoy what they believed in, fought for and to give back in such a small way to them. If you ever get a chance to go on one or more of these Honor flight send offs, you will be hooked. For a big ol boy like me to tear up as much as I did, well I just wish there was more I could do for ALL of them! Mark, Hope you got the other pictures I sent to your e-mail. Bryan Bryan, I too had trouble keeping the tears back - especially seeing the people lining the roads and standing on the bridges as we rode to Altoona. I can imagine how those Vets felt. I am so proud of Jasper County who made sure every WW2 Vet had a chance to make this trip. It was totally awesome!!! I got the pics - thanks.
