emtdouggood Posted January 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) I finally got the oil plug out of the final drive. I dipped a doll rod down in it and came out with dark brown oil on the bottom and clear oil on top. Is the brown oil from water or just old?I have no clue when the rear end has been serviced. (just got the bike) Thanks Doug Edited January 9, 2010 by emtdouggood
Eck Posted January 9, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2010 Sounds like your about half way done.. heck, may as well just change it out completely and be done with it for peace of mind.. If it is water, you will see it on top of the drained oil...sounds like it is just dirty used oil and needs changed to me..
emtdouggood Posted January 9, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 9, 2010 Thanks: I was more worried over haveing two different oils in the final drive. I am hoping its just old oil.
RandyR Posted January 9, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 9, 2010 my first thought when I saw the title 'brown oil' was water in the oil.
Kross Kountry Posted January 10, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 10, 2010 If there is water in the oil it will be cloudy and tends to foam. It sounds like you just need an oil change. By the way, water will settle to the bottem, not the top, just ask the crew on the Exxon Valdes.
