Hnadle bar Adjustment

Recommended Posts

How do I get at the handle bars to adjust. I see an allen screw in the front of the instrument pannel and two bolt on the rear(tank side). If I take these out will the instrument panel come off so I can adjust the bars?

Also, can I place a 1" riser without changing cables?

Thanks for any advise.

Mark

Which bike you asking about...1st or 2nd generation Yamaha Venture or the Tour Deluxe?

On the 2nd generation Venture I have installed Barons 1" riser extentions without replacing any of the cables.

You need 3 dang hands to install them...and I did have to re route my throttle cable 5-8 times to get it where it would fully release when turned to full lock to the right.

After that...I adjusted the bars for a month till I finally settled on the most comfortable position.

Worth the money and effort to me.

Mark, you got to remove the speedometer to get to the handle bar adjustments. There is one larger screw for the speedo (by the headlight) - then the two screws (whatever you call em) by the main bolt on the steering head. Remove those three - carefully place the speedometer on your gas tank (put a blanket down first so as not to scratch anything) - then you can get to the adjustments for the handlebars.

You should be able to put a riser on without changing the cables - but be careful when fully turning the steering - it may bump into the tank. I probably didn't use the correct terminology, but hopefully you get the idea.

I don't think you can install a riser on an RSTD, because of the way the speedo is mounted. I replaced my bars with a set of Flanders bars with a longer pull back and didn't have to get longer cables/hoses.

I looked into a riser before I bought the bars, and didn't find anyone who made one.

I'm totally confused. Several folks on this forum said they replaced the stock handlebars on their 2nd Generation RSTD with the Flanders G2, part no. 650-08763. That exact bar arrived from Phat Performance today and I immediately went down to my service guy to replace the stock bar. When he took the speedo off we compared the bars and there is NO WAY the speedometer will fit back over the top of the Flanders G2 bar because the center of the bar is a full 2" narrower than the stock bar, hence the speedo will not fit back over the top of it.

For those who have said on this forum that they fit the Flanders G2 on a 2006 RSTD: what did you do with the speedometer? No one ever mentioned have to make any adjustments to remount the speedo, but the tech and service manager both confirmed that there was no way it would fit inside the narrow center dimension of the G2.

Anybody out there know what to do? I REALLY need some more pullback on the bike, and thought this would do it. I e-mailed Flanders and even they said the 650-08763 was the bar for the RSTD. But I don't know what they figured a fellow is supposed to do with the speedometer. Maybe they're all thinking about a Venture, where the speedometer placement isn't a problem.

Help!!!

Did you put that one on your RSTD? If so, how much more pullback did it give you over the stock bar?

Check here about the part number. I've got them on my 05, gives you about 2" more pullback and makes a world of difference. You will have to drill a small hole in the bars for the throttle sleeve. The stock bar weights won't work either. I re-used my existing cables, but did have to reroute them under the triple tree.

Hello Mark

Thank you for the request. Below is the information you requested. I was going to return your call but it's still a bit early on the west coast at this time. I will follow up with you shortly.

Now for the information overload. There is a little bit of reading here but I just want to make clear the area needed to be covered. The whole upgrade isn't a bad job to do. I can do it in less than a day if I can stay on it which doesn't happen much.

The Bar: Made by Flanders are near copy of the stock OEM bars that are on the RSTD with the exception of the pull back dimension is 2’’ longer will bring the grip area closer to you. In most people it will relieve the nagging pain that you get between your shoulder blades on long rides and some feel this upgrade makes the bike handle lighter.

Though you can get by with the stock throttle, brake and clutch lines it does pull on them a bit . Some choose to replace the throttle and Hydraulic lines when they do this upgrade. Yamaha also recommends the rubber lines be replaced every 4 years.

Our custom made SS line kits are a one time fix you'll never have to go back a change them. The kit contains replacement lines for all the rubber hydraulic lines on the bike with the exception of the lower clutch line. The lower clutch line is not replaced because you can't see it and the working pressures on the clutch are much lower than the brake lines. The line kits are made with extra length needed for the Flanders upgrade and the rest of the lines are made to fit the RSTD. This kit is not a generic fit all kit. It's made to fit the RSTD and only the RSTD.

Grips: The stock OEM grips can be used with the Flanders bars but you will need our bar end weight mounting kit to secure the OEM bar weights to the Flanders H-bars.

One complaint I have heard about the stock grips is the diameter is a little small. I found some closed cell replacement foam sleeve that install over the grip area of the grips. They just have to be trimmed to fit. This are a very popular add on for those that want to keep the OEM grips. They do work rather well. Best thing is they don't cost a bunch.

I think we have covered all the items now. Below is the quote for all the items above. If you need it I can help.
