What's up with the price of milk?

I've been working alot for the last few months trying to save up for a new RSV and not have much time to hang out with the boss. Well today before I went to work I went with her to our local Wal-Mart to pick up a few things. One item we needed was a gallon of milk. I went to the cooler where the milk was and could not believe it, I actually said out loud " Oh my god, $5.14 for a gallon of milk, you've got to be kiding me" What in the world is going on? Is there a new special breed of cow producing this high dollar milk. Last time I checked the same old cows producing the same old milk that was $2.00 a gallon the last time I went shopping. If the are any dairy people on the forum please inlighten me.

Compared with other commodities the price of milk has been fairly stable. It may be the same old cows, but the price of gas, price of feed, cost of financing, etc all affect the price.

I love getting pay raises, but then so does every one else. This also affects the prices of everything.

Well fellers, Monsta almost hit the mark. The availabilty of corn is the problem. With the folks who are making fuel, feeding their stock, feeding families, and whiskey making this makes corn a well used comodity. There just arn't enough farmers growing it to keep up with the demand. SOOO, that's what makes it cheeper to get drunk than to give your little ones a bottle of milk.

I remember when I was 15 years old, which was a few year ago:rotf: I tassaled corn in the summer time. I remember the farmers that I worked for mowing the corn down. When I asked why, they told me that the goverment paid them to cut it so that a surplus would not be created.

Well, when the farmers are guaranteed a price for crappy corn to turn into fuel they stopped growing feed corn and sweet corns. Other grains and vegetables are also being grown less because farmers are being paid to grow corn for fuel.

The real truth about ethanol is we can not grow enough corn in this country if even if we turned every farm into a corn field for fuel.

We need to get off of this stupid corn for fuel fad that we are on and start growing corn for food again.

I do most of the grocery shopping and it's been absolutely PAINFUL lately.

I wince every time I look at the price of milk. Milk ran at $2.44 a gallon for YEARS. Now I see it at $3.09, $3.49, and at the smaller stores--$5 or more.

Then lets talk about where it really HURTS--ICE CREAM!!!!!! It isn't just milk, it's ALL dairy. Most ice cream has jumped $2 in price as well.

Yogurt has jumped almost a dollar.

:bawling:

It s called high gas prices affecting shipping costs and corn being used for Ethanol. Ethanol plants are sprouting up fast. I think it a way for the government to subsidize farmers in a back door way and start scaling back on the many farmer subsidies that the government provides. The big problem I see with it E85 costs near the same level of regular gas around here but I wont get the same mileage so why would I buy it. Juggler is absoulutely right we can never grow enough corn for fuel or biodiesel.

Well, Ethanol isn't Milk anymore, but ....

we have updated Law since last Year, to save the Environment.

They now have to mix at least 4 Percent Bioproduced Fuel or Diesel in our Gas and also Diesel. Diesel-Engines is a lot bigger Market here than in US.

Guess what happens ? We do not have anything near of the needed cultivable Land to bring up the Volumes needed to hold up the Law. Neither of our european Neighbors do have, they have same or similiar Law to obey.

OK, so what would you do if you can't obey the Law by buying in Country ??

Buy it somewhere else on the World. Logic as this is the nearest and only Option.

But ...

We buy now in Malaysia. OK, no Problem with that. But Malaysia also did not have enough Land to grow the Plants in such an emerging Market. So, what do they do ? They burn down their Rain Forrest to extend cultivable Land and produce what those stupid Europeans want to buy from them. Picture that.

Of Course, this is all in the Name of lowered Pollution, Save the Planet, global warming Gases, you name it ....

As for the Milk, here in Europe, Milk is the daily used Product, which has the utmost Miles travelled on it.

:think: This is perfectly sound logic from a Socialist Liberal "Al Gore" point of view. Think about that and tell me you're not more afraid of Al Gore and friends than so called Global Warming.

I don't want this Thread into something more or less political. But, these Politics are Part of all Consumer Prices.

Our Government has an Attitude since 12 or 15 Years in this Matters. I don't care anymore about that. I even make some Money through it, because we are working on the Netherland's Atlantic Dam's since 5 Years and this not going to stop. Nearly the whole Netherlands are below Sea-Level and if they don't do anything about their Dams Heights and Strongeness, the rising Sea-Levels will pull the whole Country in the Sea. They would be completly gone in 2038.

The US Government did not totaly deny the global Warming, but Prs. Bush said, the US Economy and their People are his Mission, not the Weather.

I don't blame Al Gore and his Friends or their political Friends. He has a Mission and everybody who hears his Words, can hopefully think about it on his/her Own. And if his only Mission would be, rising 50000 Bucks for an Hours Speak instead of 20000. I don't care.

The global warming is a Fact, nobody can or should deny that. Also, the Question about who and where has more or less Effect on that Warming is worthless.

If it's only the the normal Life Cycle of our Planet or the Actions, taken or not taken by Mankind?

I don't know and i don't care. Only Thing is, we have to do something against this. If we can have a Effect on this, ok, lets give us a Try. If we can't make a Change happen, OK, but we tried to.

If we can make another Storm like Cathrina NOT happen, a Lot of Lives are saved and nobody needs to stay in a Barn for Months. I do not need to tell you Folks in US about Thunderstorm, flooding Rain for Days, Snow in Summer, Summer in the Winter and so on.... you all know that by yourselves. I do not want to blame anyone for this. If it the Vehicle Pollution, the AC in warm Regions, the Fridges, the Heatings ... i don't care.

I think our Children do not need to be born in a World we did destroy somehow and we do know about our bad Habbits and the changes this happens to have on our Environment. What will i answer my Niece when she askes me sometimes in the Future, why the Heck, did you not do anything against this Mess you and the Elders made?

In Fact, i don't know how to Answer this Question and of Course i'm anything else than an active Environmentalist or voting Green Party. I don't like their Habbits, Behaviour and anything they represent. But i, just for myself, will try to do my Best that my Part is going to clean up. I will ride my Bikes and my V8-Pickup like it did, because it's Fun, i love it and i won't give up.

But there are more things to do. Other Things. First Step is, i plan on a 20 KWp Photovoltaic-Plant on my Roof. Will cost me a Lot of Money, ROI should be in 12 to 15 Years, but i don't care. If this Plant works out, i will definatly bring up some more of this.

Our Politics are going to shut down our nuclear Powerplants over the next 30 Years, they will need to produce more conventionell Power, natural Gas, Cole ... Hey good Idea, that will help the global Warming of Course ...

But me, i will grin on my own Plants and think, no, not because of me, i've done something... just a little Piece, but i've done something.... and let the overwhelming Sun work for me. And maybe, if my Niece asks the Million Dollar Question i'm able to point on my Roof and say 'I can't speak for the Others and what they have done, but look what i've done!'

You betcha, lots of politics in agriculture. Don't complain about farmers when your mouth is full. I grew up on the farm and my life is tied real close to the ag economy. This forum is about motorsickles, lets not get way off and into deep s--- here. Nuff said.

Meet each other here, send a PM to who you want to converse politics with and go that route, MOTORSICLES is right. I would love to debate this issue but will do it around here, verbally, this is not the forum for this, and I for one want to keep us all on this forum.

  • 7 years later...

Actually, I went to buy milk this week, with me prepping for gastric bypass, and a 23 yr old in the house, the milk goes fast. This week I paid $2.49 for milk @ Kroger!, lately it's been over $4, the next cheapest place to get milk was the Aldi's across the street for the same price, but their prices haven't raised or lowered in months. Also thrilled that gas prices came down too. Now, if the rest of the food prices and cost of living expenses would drop too.....
