  1. Hi Everyone! I have a question regarding starting the RSTD. I previously had a V-Star 1100 and my normal cold start would be full-choke and depressing the start button for less than a second to one second. It would seem to catch rather quickly and fire up. However with my RSTD, normal cold start is full-choke and depressing the start button for 4-5 seconds. For the first 2~3 seconds or so I just hear the starter, and from 3~6 seconds I hear the engine quitely starting to catch on. For another second or two after releasing the start button the engine slowly spins (idle speed) until it suddenly fires up to a good full-choke rpm speed. Moreover, if I leave the bike for a half hour after an hour long ride, which I would consider the bike to be warm, I still have to go through the same routine. It will never just fire right up quickly. I do live in Canada, but the average temperature for the past while has been 60~70F. Does this sound like a problem/needs maintenance issue or is this Normal? I feel like i'm going to wear the starter out by holding it for that long. Background info: I ride my RSTD as much as I can (at least 4 days a week, minimum 2 hours per day) Replaced spark plugs Replaced fuel filter Ran a can of Seafoam Cleaned air filters Changed oil and oil filter Synchronized carbs Changed coolant Thanks!!
  2. I read several threads on mounting a garage door opener on the RSV and newer RSTD's. None of them were on the older RSTD's. So here is what I did. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp432%3C9%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C483%3B958329nu0mrj First I opened up the remote an soldered wires to the activation button. When the cover is closed, the wires come through the whole in the front of the cover. You might have to create one on your remote. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43332%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4843753329nu0mrj Then I found a suitable location for the remote button. I decided that behind the seat near the ignition switch was easy to get at, out of the way, and had plenty of room to work with. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp432%3B6%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4843756329nu0mrj I wired a momentary button from Radio Shack ($2.39) and heat shrinked the wires. Make sure the switch is "N O" (normally open) so it only activates when you press the button. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43335%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C483%3B959329nu0mrj Next I removed the drivers seat and drilled a hole for the button. Mine needed to be 3/8". http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp432%3B%3A%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C484374%3B329nu0mrj I installed the button. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43333%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4843754329nu0mrj I removed the right side cover and had to relocate the relay from the center mount to the back one to make room for the remote. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43445%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4843755329nu0mrj Relay now on the back mount. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43332%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4846947329nu0mrj I used a zip tie to secure the remote to the two front mounts. Then I connected the button and the remote with bullet connectors to allow me to remove it if necessary for maintenance. http://images.photos1.walmart.com/232323232%7Ffp43453%3Enu%3D33%3B6%3E%3A%3B9%3E238%3EWSNRCG%3D32%3C4843757329nu0mrj Thats it! Simple, out of the way, easy to activate, and less than $3.00 out of my pocket.
  3. Repeating a mod from previous bikes (and as posted a couple of times here), I wired in and mounted my garage door opener today. I put it on the plastic flange/cover just above the gas cap. Just wanted to share this mounting location in case people are looking for options other than mounting the button on the dash. There was plenty of room to stick the opener under there, the push button is pretty unobtrusive and I can get to it easily with either hand. Drilled a small hole in the opener case for wires which I soldered to the switch contacts of the opener. Drilled a 1/2" hole in the flange/cover to mount the push button switch from Radio Shack ($4). Popped everything back together, tightened up the two bolts and it's time to hit the road again. Pics below....
  4. OK we're riding along last week {Monday-Tuesday} going to Lincoln Caverns in Pa. listening to the radio. I reach up with my thumb to hit the seek button on the radio remote on the left handlebar. It changes channel but when I go to release the button it pops out at me. Luckily my finger is still there to stop it from its jumping to oblivion at 55. I manage to grab it and hand it over to the wife. Upon inspection of the button it seems to have a broken spear { for want of a better word} which renders it unusable. Does anyone have a spare one lying around with a few missing buttons that would be willing to sell me a button out of it?
  5. Hey, guys, the manual says to pull the R side faring to get to the relay, I don't see anything that looks like a relay. Can someone tell me where that crazy relay is located? When I push the starter button I hear a repeated clicking (solenoid ?), but starter doesn't do a thing. Battery tests out high side on green scale, after a 45 sec load test it is about 80% on green scale. Monday I went into work early to run some erronds, first 2 times it started like NEW, then it just clicked once and nothing, 4th time I tried to start it, I had to push. Last 2 times it pulled the volt meter down to O, even without hitting the starter button, the meter stayed on O ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I don't get off work again until next Thursday so may not reply till weekend or Thurs. Thankx, Gary C
  6. Any possibility of a "like" button on here? Or a "thumbs up" "thumbs down"? I find it a really helpful feature, like the thanks but not quite the same, and it keeps the forum from being cluttered with "good post" and such. So many times I've seen posts and thought, "Great post!" but "thanks" wasn't really appropriate and "reply" and then clicking a smiley then "post" then back three times to get back to the forum is, frankly, too much to be bothered with just to say "good post". Just a thought.
  7. Hello everyone and Happy New Year! My 06 RSTD Midnight has a delay or pause when I hit the starter switch. I turn on the ignition and wait for a a few seconds and then hit the start button. It starts and cranks real good but it takes a second or two before cranking. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced any thing like this and if they have come up with a remedy. I just get a creepy feeling that one day I will be unable to start at all. Thank you all in advance for your help. Bikerdude53
  8. Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I'm lying. On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem. Then one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen. "Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it." "You know where the button is," I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. "Reset it yourself!" "But I'm scared!" she persisted. "What if it starts going and sucks me in?" There was a meaningful pause and then, "C'mon, it'll only take you a second." So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behavior as extremely cowardly. Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing. It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a "fight or flight" syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the "flight" option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of "been-there, done-that" paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter.....and not succeeding. Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. "What's the matter?" They all asked, "Cat got your tongue?" If they only knew!
  9. I bought my 99 RSV in 2011 and the cb has not worked since I got it. When I push the cb button nothing happens. The rest of the system worked just fine until today when I went out to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. I removed the CD player from the bracket and left it connected then I removed the trunk mounting screws, lifted the trunk and tilted it forward to get to the cb. Then I removed the cover and then unplugged and reconnected all of the connectors to the cb. Then I turned on the key and tried the cb button. The FM radio just kept on playing just like before. Then I pushed the channel up button and nothing happened, then I pushed the audio button and nothing happened. I tried all of the buttons and nothing happend. It just kept playing the same radio station that it was on when i first turned it on. The only thing that works is the volume and the display was showing the station it was on. Then I turned off the ignition the display went dark but continued to display the radio station for several seconds before it went blank. I turned on the ignition and the display lit up and it continued to play the same radio station as before only now the display is blank. There is still no response from any of the buttons but the volume still works. At least it is my favorite radio station. Can anyone tell me what the heck happened and how I can fix it.
  10. Who could help me to find a problem with my CC ? When I adjust my CC the speed goes down and the ajustment release.I need to reset all the time. As example, no brake, no clutch, fifth gear 100 klm an hour, I push on the button, the light is green and the speed goes down until 90 klm an hour and the adjustement fail. I need to push on the button to re-arm and the light comes green.. and the speed goes down until 90 klm an hour ..... What could do that ?
  11. It doesn't happen all the time, but here goes. I have an '05 RSV. When I use the CB talk button on the left handle bar grip, the CB changes channels. As I sit here, it just hit me to try the passenger talk button and see what happens, so next time I will. If I have the display set to view the radio and push the talk button, the radio changes channels going thru the preset channels. It is happening more frequent now but not all the time. I have had all the connectors apart inside the fairing and under the seat to clean and apply dielectric grease and still have the problem. Any ideas??
  12. Would it be possible to have a report abuse button added to the threads ? There are certain people on here that go out of their way to insult others on this forum. Such action should not be tolerated and can only lead to bad feelings and possible loss of our membership. One site I visit has this button. When a member reports an abuse, a moderator views it, decides if it was a verbal abuse, then if it was, deletes it and notifies the offending party. If the same person has to be warned multiple times, they loose their membership.
  13. I went to the Hot Springs AR rally this past weekend. Yesterday morning getting ready to come back home from Hot Springs I went to start my 07 RSV and it just clicked when I hit the start button. I noticed when I hit the start button all the lights and the radio shut off. The radio did not come back on. I turned the key off and back on and it started fine, but had to turn the radio back on and all of my radio preset channels were gone. It did this one more time on the way home at one of the stops. I am thinking from the threads I read this morning it is in the ignition switch or could be the ignition wiring. I will not be able to check out the wiring till Friday. Need to check my warranty and find out when it expires since it is an 07 model and I bought it used.
  14. What size are the chrome button head socket screws that hold the trunk brackets to the fender? Was leaving for work today and noticed the trunk was loose and one of the screws is missing.
  15. When I turned on my laptop a little while ago, a screen came up that said I had been viewing copy righted material or even child porn and the FBI had locked up my computer. The only way I could get it unlocked was to got to a store that sells the green cards and put $100 on it and use the information to load on to their page and within 1 to 48 hours, my computer would be unlocked. The only way I could get around it was to manually shut down my computer with the on/off button and then when I hit the on button, I held the ESC button until it came up in the safe mode. I was able to do a restore to an earlier date and when I restarted it, it seems to be working OK. I checked with Snopes and there are some Sober viruses that sound similar to this. Has anyone heard of this? RandyA
  16. I cracked open my faring today and removed the cassette player. Anyway I dropped the spacer for the light bar. I thought it went into the front cowling. so I took them both off. I found what looked Like a horn under the shifter side. Hit the button and sure enough it is a horn. I thought the horn was on the break side with the chrome cover circled in the picture. Hit the button & nothing happened there. So is this a horn or what?
  17. I'm new to the forum and new to Yamaha as well, and recently acquired an '89 XVZ1300 with 18K miles. Have an issue with an intermittent electrical problem, and would like some experienced opinions regarding likely causes. Initially when I tried to start it I got no response from the start button, yet all lights appeared to function, so I figured either the start button or relay. I jumped the positive battery terminal to the starter side of the relay and she fired right up, confirming the likelyhood of the start button being the culprit. However, as I was pulling away (on a very bumpy gravel drieway) I hit a bump and the dash and headlight went out, bike still running. It was late at night, and I wasn't home, so I turned it around and headed back up the very bumpy driveway. I shut it down, turned the key off and back on, and tried the start button, but no response and no lights (bypassing the solenoid still worked though). At the time I had only an owners manual for a 1200 (have since downloaded the service manual from this website, thank you very much) and noted the grounds for all the accessory lights in question are tied together to one grounding point. I removed several body panels and started rooting around looking for bad connections etceterra. Traced the ground to inside the left upper fairing, and it looked fine. In fact, all of the wiring connections looked pretty clean. This 23 year old machine must have spent most of its mostly dormant life indoors. Anyway, after rooting around and not finding anything out of the ordinary (begging a ride home, getting some sleep and returning with some tools) I tried to start it again and it fired right up, but still no lights. I took the start button apart and it looked fine. I rechecked the wiring harness, fuses, etcetera and found only a couple of clues. First, the fuse for the tail light was hot as hell (and has since melted), which seems to me must be a separate issue, probably a bad ground somewhere on the way to the tail, although I couldn't find anything. Second, I noted a constant low current to the starter relay switch. Unfortunately all I had at the time is a test light (very dim light when voltage detected, not enough to throw the switch), and I haven't had an opportunity to get back into it to check it. Now I figured I better get her home to work in the comfort of my garage, so I put it back together, and pressed start. To my surprise it fired right up, all accessories and lights working. In addition, on the way home I received another clue. The lights and accessories were intermittenly shutting on and off, which seemed to coincide with progressively smaller bumps in the road. I'll give the start button a more thorough examination, which may be the cause of the contant current to the starter relay switch. I'll also try to chase down what I feel is probably a faulty ground in the tail light wiring. I'm thinking possibly the ignition switch. Otherwise I was hoping someone with more experience with these machines might recognize the symptoms and point me in the right direction.
  18. I wanted to post an ad for my 83 silver wing in the other motorcycles section but cant find a button to create a new ad. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this? Thanks in advance
  19. I ever done. For 5 years the radio on my 1st gen had very low volume.Yesterday, while working on the bike I ACCIDENTALLY pushed the mute button on the remote and the radio about blasted out my eardrums.I never knew that button was even there.Don needs to add a donate button for the dumb things we have done on these bikes.I feel better now.
  20. I did a search using the normal forum search and the google option to see if this is the "obligatory" re-solder but can't find it. So I drive home with no issue, stop in to make the wife happy, and go to leave again. Turn on the key, hit the button and,,nothing. No dash display at first and no start. After checking all fuses and the level of battery charge I try again and now the display goes through it's checks, the radio comes on, but when I hit the button I hear a faint click, no more. As if the battery is dead actually. But it isn't. Volt meter says it isn't and my charger says it isn't. What are the symptoms of the "re solder"
  21. I'm going to ask what i hope to be a dumb queston. The CB on my bike seems to be stuck on channel 9. I have pushed every button on the thing but it won't change. I see there is a preset button for that channel, could it be stuck???
  22. The PO wired up air horns but they are wired to a different button on the handle bars that is not easily reached. Sort of defeats the purpose if I have to go hunting for the button every time. So, I want to use the original horn button. The compressor is mounted just under the passenger back rest, with the horns under the saddlebags. I have print outs and directions on wiring the relay into the horn switch. My questions are..... The instructions say "20 amp fused from batt to post 87". Is this an extra inline fuse direct to batt post or do I just come off the fuse block using that fuse? Can I hook into the pink and brown wires right down beside the OEM horn and run the 2 wires to the back or does it have to be hooked in up near the button for any reason? Can I remove both OEM horns or is there any reason I would have to leave leave one on. If I decide to add a steibel horn as well, (which I am thinking of doing) do I need to run a 2nd relay or can I just tap into the same circuit as the existing air horns. When I add running lights, do I use the same fuse as in question #1 , run another inline fuse or what?
  23. Took the bike to get it inspected. I had worked the horn button a few times and got it working. But at the dealer I couldn't get it to work. I leave the dealer and I can get it to work when the bike is running. I decide to take the bike home and clean the contact points in hopes to get the horn working better. I take the switch control apart and find a lot of dirt in it I clean it with Q tips sprayed with a like windex. I try working the control trying to make the contacts touch but still can't get the switch to . I finish the cleaning and put it all back together all the other controls work fine but the Horn button. I know theres no fuse in the system are there any suggestions as to what i can do next. I can"t figure out why its not working . I know that its a constant feed to the switch and the button simply closes the circuit, If the contacts are touching why wouldn't it be working?
  24. Last season the cruise control worked great. Today was the first time out this year, And the cruise didn't want to work. When I left this morning the cruise did work going in to town. We left on our STAR chapter ride, and the cruise would turn on but the set button would not work. After about 75 miles we stopped, and when we started again the cruise worked until the first time I disengaged it, the RES light came on came on as it should, but then nothing. Hit the RES button nothing, hit the SET button nothing. I shut the cruise control off and turned it back on and and the on light comes on, but SET button doesn't work. Though out the day it worked about 4 times with me messing with it, trying to figure it out while on a 400 mile ride. Everything else is working perfectly. When I got home this evening I checked brake switches, clutch switch, and wiring. Went for a ride to see if anything helped, and no go. Got home from the test ride, and decided to check the switches on control switches on the handle bars. Took those apart and cleaned and checked the contacts in them. Everything looked good there. Haven't a chance to try it again. But I don't think that was the problem either. Over the winter I changed the motor oil & oil in the final drive, replace the rear tire, put chrome side covers on, serviced air filters, put billet air filter covers on, put chrome clutch & brake levers on. Any ideas on what & where to check next. Help is always appreciated. Thanks, Ron
  25. Legs and arms are a little short yet, but he's getting there!!! He found the (Stebel) horn button  https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=3249687484592
