Ride from LA to Vancouver BC

Hi All,

Great website and forum. I need your advice on a trip that I am about to take in 3 weeks. I just purchased a 2006 tour deluxe in LA and am driving the bike back to Vancouver, Cananda. I have 8 days set aside for the ride. I was hoping you could provide some suggestions as to great routes that will make this trip memorable. I was thinking the PCH was a must but I also wouldn't mind turning east and heading into the desert (Sedona, Vegas or Grand Canyon). Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard from a fellow "Vancouverite" (actually Burnaby)!

Yes, Calif/Oregon coast hwy 101 is a must. You could also go inland from Morrow Bay or even a bit farther north, over to Fresno and up thru Yosemite, then north thru Reno and take the north, inland route (395 to Susanville, then 139 to Klamath Falls) from there. Great riding country although I don't know what kinda weather you'd encounter at this time of year.

Just got back to Oliver BC from Phoenix. Drove down and towed my motorcycle

Drove I-5 - Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, LA on the way down and Las Vegas, Salt Lake and Boise on the way back.

Did not like the snow at the pass in Southern Oregon on the way down. Had to buy chains (that I never used). If you have good weather the coast highway would be a nice trip if you stay off I-5

If I had to bike back - I thought the Vegas, Salt Lake, Boise up to Osoyoos was the best. Lots of open highway. Lots of bikes on the raod, Nice big wide open spaces.

It depends what you like - but I would do the west side of the grand canyon (new lookout that has a glass floor). Lots of motorcycles there two weeks ago. The Hoover dam would be your next spot. Then Vegas. Then through the open country up through the unique country up to Boise and Salt lake.

Just my thoughts.

If coastal weather is bad, then more chance of Sunshine if you go Central Oregon. There is Crater Lake. There is also a beautiful Indian Reservation Resort Called Kah-Nee-Ta in Warms Springs http://206.188.205.152/pools-hot-springs-water-slides-oregon, Of couse there is a Casino, Golf, you name it, it has it all. Hmm, I should have created my user name as GolfCasinoVenture. Cross into Washington near The Dalles, Oregon. Then to Yakima and then up the Okanagon Hwy into Canada then hang a left to Vancouver BC. If you have time stop by Grand Coulee Dam and catch the evening lazer light show. The Okanagon Hwy is absolutely a long, long, long beautiful ride.

I've not traveled the hwy to Vancouver from the Okanagon Hwy but while you are still in Washington, near Omak just before the border you could take the North Cascade Hwy to I-5 then to Anacortes, then to the ferries then to Vancouver BC.

Its the Perfect Time of Year, to go thru Death Valley, if you wanted to see that area.

With 8 days of rideing time, just pick any routen thru Northern Calif, and Ore, it will be a great ride !!!

High altitude areas, are still going to be " Cold " don't forget the Electric Vests !!!

Run the Oregon Coast route ( 101 ) if you have never done that road !!!

Aloha Boco, I would agree with you the Pacific Coast Highway is a must, to include cruising back to BC via US101. I've made that run several times. The last was with my wife from San Francisco to Vancouver and back. Also rode from Los Angeles up the coast back to San Francisco last year.

If you can fit it into your schedule, I would suggest that you consider a run to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Tioga Pass into Yosemite (if it's open), then back to the Coast and on your way home.

In three weeks, we might run into each other heading in opposite directions since I will be heading to LA from SFO.

Great advice. Thanks everyone. I think i will try to do everything. From LA I will head to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, up to Carson city and then to the Oregon Coast. How many miles would be a good distance each day to be in the saddle?

if youre in Carson City spend a bit of time and tour around Lake Tahoe, its less than 30 mins away. Just make the circle around the Lake and enjoy the scenery.

I find about 500 miles a day on a long trip is about right, if its only a one or 2 day trip you can go longer but you get real tired if you push it too far too many days in a row, and you dont enjoy things as much.

It sounds like you are going inland before hitting the coast anyhow, but just a word of caution. I had heard that Hwy 1 was closed due to landslides up about 40 or so miles south of Monterey. As beautiful a ride as it is, you would not want to get caught in any detours in that area. It might be cleared by now, but it would be worth it to check first if you go that way.
