Question about saddlebag brackets for '96 Royal Star

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a set of used Yamaha leather slant bags, complete with mounting hardware. They were installed on a Road Star. I think the mounting hardward is different for a 1996 Royal Star but I can't find pictures to confirm. The Yamaha website just shows the bags and not the mounting brackets.

Can someone show my pics of the brackets for a 1996 Royal Star?

Pegscraper, where did you find that image? I looked for an hour last night and could not find it.

That helps a ton. I definitely do not have the right brackets.

I could not figure out where the lower bar bolts to.

Do you have the Yamaha part number for your brackets?

M61A1MECH- any idea how I tell which bags I got. Is there a part number on them somewhere?

The bags that won't fit on the 4 into 4 exhaust came on the Tour Delux. They are much larger than the ones on the standard Royal Star. They made the Royal Stars from 1996 - 2001 and the Tour Delux was the only one with 4 into 2 exhaust and larger bags.

Hey Marino,

THat is a easy one: He take a picture of his bike!!!

:crackup::crackup::crackup:

Now, the right question should be where did he get the brackets.

I also have a RS, but don't use that kind of sadddlebags. I have 4x4 mufflers.

However, I saw a full explosive diagram of the parts on the Yamaha OEM products retail on the web.

You can find the image of the bags and brackets here. Then go to: motorcycle - 1996 - Royal Star Tour Classic - Saddlebag. Part numbers are: 4NL-F8473-00-00 and 4NL-F8474-00-00.

The best way to tell what bags you have is to throw some pictures of them up here. Several of us could tell you what they are. Around here we have this little rule of posting pics of your bike anyway. :) The next best way is to find pictures of other Royal Stars and see what they have. I don't think you'll find part numbers on the bags. Hopefully the guy didn't butcher them up to fit other brackets to get them on his bike.

Just a point of clarification. The 98 to 01 Tour Deluxe had Hard Bags, the leather slant bags for those years came on the Tour Classic, both were set up with 4 x 2 pipes.

Ok guys. Here is the requested pic of the bike. 1996 Royal Star, 8,000 miles :)

The hard plastic bags on it in the picture is being replaced with these:

I can't find a part number on the bags anywhere. But I'm pretty sure they are the ones that fit my bike. On Yamaha's website, it shows these bags and says they fit the Royal Star and all Road Stars. These bags came off of a 2000 Road Star

One concern I have is getting the correct mounting brackets. Here is what came with the package I bought (for a Road Star)

They will not fit my bike. The holes for the fender mounts match up but not the arm that extends from the bottom.

Pegscraper- those part numbers are different than the part number I found on Yamaha's website. See link.

This link shows part number STR-4NL73-40-00 for the mounting hardware.

Marino,

:think:If you get the Roadstar bags successfully mounted, would you be interested in selling the hard plastic bags. the slant bags on my 1998 TC don't look anywhere in as good a shape as Steve's!:crying:

Only 8000 miles? Where's the bike been? Have you blown the cobwebs out of the engine yet? Sharp looking '96. And I can see why you're getting rid of those hard bags.

Those are the right bags alright. You can probably pawn the Roadstar brackets off on ebay. The part numbers I gave you are for #13 and #28 in the diagram I gave you. Did you look at that? Your number is for a package with both brackets and all the bolts too. Buying the whole package is probably cheaper than buying the pieces individually.

I thought those part numbers might be just for the brackets. I'm going to order the complete pkg. I have a buddy that is a yamaha boat dealer and he can get them for me for about $100.

I'll just sell the other brackets.

Thanks for the help.

Walter,

When I bought my RS'97 the previous owner gave me a pair of those plastic saddlebags, which I never used, since the original ones comes with Leather, which like more.

So, if you want them I was thinking on sell those. This week end I can take a picture if you want.

Hmmm You would think I would have noticed that. There were three of us who bought Royal Stars in '96 & '97, mine was the only standard Royal Star. One of the others was a Tour Delux and one was a Tour Classic. Well, we only rode those bikes for about 10 years I probably didn't have time to notice. Thanks for the info.

the hard plastic bags are not yamaha, they are made by someone else but can;t remember now who. you may also had some taillite extenders on the bike to move the liite back for bags to fit( that was the case on my wife's 01 1100 v-star that had the same set of bags on them).

tour classic I had 4x4 pipes and the short bags you are wanting to put on yours and tour classic II had the 4x2 pipes and the large slant bags( same brackets for the hard bags).

i had the large slant bags on mine and put a set of midnight venture hard bags on it, uses the same mounting brackets..

How does it look now? :) I got the new brackets yesterday and got the bags installed today. Very easy when you have the right parts.

The only thing I'm going to miss about my old bags is the lock. I can't leave anything in these and feel safe. Oh well, I think they look so much better.

It sure does look better with those bags on it. But anything would look better than the ones you took off.

Yes, the drag of the semi-hard bags is that they don't lock. I probably rely on the out of sight out of mind premise a little too much. I just try not to leave anything too valuable or difficult to replace in them, depending on where I'm parking and what time of day it is and how long I'll be away from it. Also, don't park somewhere where you can be seen putting something in them and then walking away. That's just an invitation. I either put stuff in them before I get to where I'm parking, or I take stuff in with me. I do chuckle sometimes in our small town when someone will park and I hear the chirp of their car alarm being activated, and there sets all my stuff wide out in the open, as I frequently have so much stuff that some of it gets strapped down to the back seat. So far nothing has ever come up missing. But sometimes I wonder how long it will be.
