frame crack 83

is there a certain time or a certain mileage when the frame on the 83 will crack, and will i have to remove the engine to fix it and do i want to? should i sell and get a 86 or newer?:sign67:what will i feel when this happens?, the crack i mean

I have been checking mine also, after hearing about it on here. I would like to see some more pics of the actual crack locations, so I can be sure I'm checking the right place. To my understanding, it is where the frame crosses right above the center stand.

randya has some pics in the 1st gen tech library. I would hope I wouldn't have to tear the bike down that far...whew!

i dont know if i would want to deal with all that,and the 2nd gear issue,if i would of known about these issues i may have waited for a later model, the bike just turned 20000miles so i have time, monty did you tell your grandson to come to take pictures of the hitch?

That was my son. You know, we rode today, and I should have had him take some pics with his cell phone. I will get them as soon as possible for you.

If you emptied the fuel and oil, you could probably lay her over on her side and weld some gusset plates in there before it cracks. Catch it early enough and it'll be easier. BTW, 2nd gear is easy to fix if you catch it before anything breaks. Several of us have done it and we'd be glad to help. Do the frame and second gear all at once, be a good winter project.

This winter, I PLAN on tearing my bike completely down to the frame. Keyword....plan.

Then, I can reinforce/paint the frame, fix the 2nd gear problem, and get all of the plastic fixed and repainted.

Whenever I ride with my brother, I see a crack. But it's not a frame issue. Glad my VR is can stay ahead of his Wing.
