MiCarl Posted January 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2009 I need to order up some new grips for my 1st gen. Can anyone confirm or deny 7/8" diameter? Thanks!
skydoc_17 Posted January 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 2, 2009 Hey Carl, After reading your post I pulled out the old trusty Digimatic caliper and measured the handle bars on my 87' VR and the exposed black portion of the handle bar where the brake master clamps to is indeed 7/8 of an inch. Hope this helps, Earl

lonestarmedic Posted January 3, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 3, 2009 I just stripped the OEM grips off of the wrecked 1986. I measured 7/8" on the left bar. However, the right throttle sleeve is 1". You will need a grip depth of 5 3/4" to clear the bar ends. It is actually about 5 5/8" right at the end. This means either early 1st Gens. are different or no-one has stripped the right grip for a long time. Kuryakyn does make a set of grips for the 2 different sizes in one kit. Rottdoglover Posted January 3, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 3, 2009 7/8" is correct. Yes the right is a little bigger to compensate for throttle. Don't try just 1 one the right and freak thinking you got the wrong set. They are left & right. My 88 had to have the worst feeling grips ever.
