sewing machine, extra material and restless nights = new bike cover

I was looking at those sweeeeeeet stretch covers but I couldn't come to the point of plunking down $260 bucks for one, so dragged out the old sewing machine (all bachelors should have one hidden away under manly things like car mags, shop rags and gun cases btw)

Ran down to the local Mill End fabrics and picked up 3yds of waterproof nylon and some elastic and a couple grommets and went to work.

I had to cut the sheet as it laid on the bike to get it to fit, but it is actually nice and snug.

I used bungee cords to test the fit but am going to replace them with a bungee/elastic cord that will be a permanent loop. Just toss the cover over the bike, hook the loops around the footpegs and instant rain/sun cover.

Total = $23 bucks in materials (already had the grommet pliers)

I was thinking about it. I'm waiting to see how it does first though. Would hate to make some for others and then "RIPPPPPPP". it falls apart, lol.

I was really impressed with the Geza covers. Those things are pretty slick, but expensive.

I'd need to sit down with a 2nd gen and figure out the layout. At least I have this one that if I decide to replicate I can just unstitch and use as a pattern.

(and could actually clean up the edges. Never try cutting cloth while it's hanging on a bike and the wind is blowing and you have a lit cigarette in your mouth) :rotfl:

Tonight I'll give it the water test and see just how "waterproof" the material really is.

I might suggest you treat it with Coleman's camp dry or a similar waterproofing product. I have had success with it significantly improving the waterproofness with Nylon jackets, rain suits, bags and such. Its pretty cheap and easy. Just soak it down with spray hang it up till its dry then use it. only need to repeat about twice a year.
